Same. I was aware of the books when they came out but didn't take much interest because they were for kids.

Then she began speaking out on women's rights and I took notice

Exactly.

Datun · 22/10/2026 08:52

It really is the most baffling of all arguments to say that the only men who should be allowed in women's spaces are those who really, really want to and refuse to take no for an answer.

Edited

Brilliantly put, Datun - someone should put this on a billboard or something. It deserves wider publicity.

Can I ask lovely people of this thread….is Coolfor the Lacksie of this thread?

Edited

Damn myself for having to say this, but Lacksie’s arguments are at least better thought out than whatever this incoherent frothing passes for.

I find it utterly terrifying that there were so few women (and men) able to stand up like this - and eternally grateful that she did.

The cancel culture around this issue is something that should worry everyone, regardless of where they sit in the debate.

JKR is one of very, very few people who are uncancellable but it has still cost her greatly.

I'm heartened to see how the comments have changed on every news item about this from the first essay. I don't think it reflects a huge change in opinion for most if the public but the fact they are no longer afraid to say it.

That said, without JKR and other campaigners, this juggernaut against women's rights was gaining such momentum and being swept through without any critical thinking so that it would have been almost impossible to turn around.

I never used to pay much attention to Rowling, though of course I was aware of her on the cultural landscape. I have TRAs to thank for finally getting me to sit up and take notice. All I can say is: thank you, TRAs. Without you I don't think I ever would have learned about all the wonderful things she's done. This doesn't make her a hero of mine, but it does make her perhaps the only billionaire's I'm aware of who has been an unmitigated force for good.

Edited

Me too. I've never read any of her books - the grown-up ones are not my kinda thing, and the HP ones are children's books and I'm not a child - I know, I know, that's a controversial and unpopular view but there you go😏

So when CoolforKats claimed JKR 'compares herself to Churchill'
I thought WTF?? and hoped somebody would explain what seemed like the most unlikely thing ever.

It was CoolforKats who provided the 'proof' with the full quote from JKR.
I can't believe CoolforKats genuinely does not get the joke - the formula 'if X then I am Y' is a known humorous device.

It's hard to explain humour to people who appear not to have a sense of humour, but here goes:

If Michael Carrick is a Premier-league-standard manager, then I'm a monkey's uncle!
does not mean that the speaker is directly comparing themselves to a monkey.

And when Dorothy Parker wrote:

Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song,
A medley of extemporanea;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong;
And I am Marie of Roumania.

she was not actually 'directly comparing herself' to the Queen of Romania, CoolforKats. That's the whole flipping point!

'if...then.. I am Winston Churchill' is the same formula, not a claim to be, or a direct comparison to, Winston Churchill.

Not everybody has a sense of humour - take CoolforKats, for instance - no, please take CoolforKats.. Grin

Ah, Churchill. An enduring part of history, with those immortal words “I ain’t getting on no plane, fool”. Iconic.

🤣 Pity the beaches

"As everyone knows, I’m in the privileged position of never needing to work again and of not needing state run services, but I once lived hand to mouth. I was one of the women who couldn’t afford to insulate herself from potential physical harm and who fell into the categories of both domestic abuse and sexual assault victim. Large numbers of women who’ve never been poor, who’ve never worked the kind of job where they’d be vulnerable to predatory men and who’ve never needed a rape crisis centre have spent the last few years vilifying members of their own sex for fighting to retain their hard-won rights and single-sex spaces, in ways that have shocked and disgusted me. I freely confess that I feel an extra layer of abhorrence for any woman who claims to be a feminist while doing it."

I see Kat has continued to beclown themself over night. Marvellous.

And has no concept of how risk assessment works. No one ever said 'well I've personally never fallen off a roof garden, so we dont need a railing 16 floors up', have they....

Mmmnotsure · 22/10/2026 09:54

Could we dial down the Churchill/A Team references, please and thank you? Am trying to drink coffee and it's all perilously close to my laptop.

Wishesandhorses · 22/10/2026 09:56

Reading the frothing and thinking - how in the world did you manage to get that message from the text??

It's like some form of RSD, where you say 'its necessary to clean your teeth twice daily' and what is heard by the recipient is something like 'your breath stinks, I have always hated you and I reject you entirely'.

Which is very sad for the person experiencing it, but not real or rational in any way.

Oh dear.

Do you really think that she’s actually comparing herself to Churchill? And not simply taking the piss out of India W’s colossal
lack of comprehension and cultural references?

Are you from the UK? Do you have a sense of humour? Do you have trouble with nuance? Trouble understanding sarcasm?

Talking of IW, he's currently in my algorithm because the other day I looked up his post offering to show his "cervix" on tv to show someone on here who'd never seen it! Funny how death threats are only "real" if they are sent to anyone who is trans. So even though people have been convicted for repeatedly threatening to kill JKR they obviously didn't mean it.

We have the wit and eloquence of JKR; they have "social associations", AI word salading and a complete lack of humour. It's not really fair.

Par for the course for IW.
In making a ridiculous comparison between JKR and this fictional soap character, he belittles all women who have suffered coercive control in real life.
No concern for actual women then, IW?
Shocked face

Manyanamanyana · 22/10/2026 01:11

Right, so it's the #notallmen argument? Women must ignore the dangers at a population level so as to not hurt the feelings of men. That actually translates to: women must shut-up about the dangers, accept them, and change their own behaviours and ways they interact with the world if they want to avoid those dangers. They must never say "I told you so" because that is using victims for polical purposes. They must not mention the pattern. They must accept that there will always be a few bad apples but that these things are "unavoidable". Because to actually avoid "these things" (read systematic violence and sexual violence against women and children by predominantly male humans) men would have to be told "no" sometimes, and we all know that limiting men's freedoms by telling them no, or hurting their feelings by naming patterns, is a far greater crime than leaving women and children vulnerable and exposed, and telling them to shut-up about it.

Top post. Many thanks.

There was a group called The Association [whether valid or social, I can't say] their big hit in 1967 was a song with the unlikely title of Windy
with the lines
Who's bending down to give me a rainbow
Everyone knows it's Windy

I'm not making that up, honest😃

JKR is assuming that & provides no evidence to back up her claim.

It is self evident.
If you work in an office, you don't have to change into a uniform at work. And office jobs are generally more prestigious and on average better paid than jobs that require a uniform.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/10/2026 11:10

CoolforKats · 22/10/2026 00:21

Because the generalisation smears all trans people as a threat. Using a minority group to represent the majority is hateful. Just ask muslims who get smeared as terrorists or Jews who get smeared as degenerate globalists or black people that get smeared s criminals.

What a surprise to see that you say 'all trans people' and actually mean 'all male trans people'. Nobody is classing transmen as a threat. Women who say they identify as men do not suddenly acquire a male pattern of offending, so are still welcome in female spaces, where they benefit from the same safeguarding measures as other women and girls, if they're actually being enforced. There have been some worrying cases of women in that group committing violent acts after taking testosterone, so it's something that deserves further research, but the number of women (using the normal definition) being convicted of sexual offences is still a tiny fraction of the number of men, whether they identify as such or not.
