So what's the 'update'?

JKR is very angry. She's especially angry with women who won't agree with her that trans people are a danger. She thinks these women must live in an elite bubble where violence never happens.

Or maybe, just maybe they live in the real world not a castle & never noticed a dangerous trans woman.

Yes indeed Joanne, experience does shape one's perceptions.

Edited

Men as a sex-class do present a danger to women. But you know that.
Congrats for being the first naysayer on this thread though🏅

She should consider a career as a writer.

😂

Why would you start a thread about that on FWR which exists so that women can say that.

If you really wanted an answer you should have posted on Feminist Chat which is for be kind feminists.

Hopefully now that we have FWR we can move beyond the same old pressure to justify ourselves.

The important question is as we know or agree is what do we do know.

We many not have JKR's public reach, or financial resources, but can do something?

Well pardon me for not being completely cognisant of what parts of the huge Mumsnet site actually exist 🤣

I started the thread in a section that regularly discusses feminism, sex and gender because I wanted a debate on whether you could be a feminist and fully support all the demanded trans rights. It was an interesting and for the most part very good natured discussion.

Why on earth are you addressing me as if I'm a "be kind feminist"?

PS not one person on the many, many pages of that thread suggested that it was in the wrong place.

I remember the day she joined properly (not the senior moment) I just felt such a massive wave of relief.

Thank you J.K. for all that you do, I know it must be really difficult sometimes, and we all know how much you have sacrificed for your stand on this.

There are millions of women who will be eternally grateful. Also to all the other wonderful women that have put their heads above the parapet.

Me too, I was so upset about the Forstater case, I remember I was in a pub in Dublin just before Xmas 2019 when that was handed down, and then she posted her tweet and like others, it was such a relief, I was tearful!

Timing is everything, @Keeptoiletssafe !

Keeptoiletssafe · 21/10/2026 19:31

Presumably the BBC producers that are making a documentary about her will have to read it.

Definitely made a few tears appear. I admire her bravery and thank her (and her family) for tolerating the abuse.

What is shocking is that many TRAs won't read it, for fear or being convinced by her essay. They would possibly have to acknowledged, even to just themselves, that they were always wrong about JK.

I wonder if Unison leader, Andrea Egan would bother to read it.

And this. Who, in the Labour Party, for example, would be prepared to stand up and say, no ifs or buts, I fully agree with JKR?

Maurice Glasman is the only one I can think of.

MoistVonL · 21/10/2026 19:12

CardboardScott · 21/10/2026 17:29

Anyone else have tears running down their face while reading it?

Definitely.

While sitting across from my pro-trans-rights adult child who has "less than no interest in what she has to say." Which also breaks my heart.

To me, all of this was consistent with my lifelong commitment to women’s and girls’ rights and opportunities, with a particular emphasis on those who’re vulnerable or disadvantaged in various ways. For nearly thirty years I’ve funded women’s domestic abuse refuges, rape crisis centres and projects helping women affected by hardship or disadvantage. I well remember receiving abuse by post, years ago, because I spoke up for single mothers. I’ve also fallen foul of no small number of men’s rights activists online.

That's the thing - being a gender critical activist or campaigner is exactly in line with championing women's rights in every other sphere.

She's done so much quietly and behind the scenes for years and years. It's only when speaking out publicly would actually help women that she chose to go public. I admire her from the bottom of my ink black heart.

IwantToRetire · 21/10/2026 19:10

Imdunfer · 21/10/2026 17:21

Yup, hence my recent thread whether it was possible to be a feminist and support trans rights to be in single sex spaces at the same time. (The answer is no.)

With her all the way!

"As everyone knows, I’m in the privileged position of never needing to work again and of not needing state run services, but I once lived hand to mouth. I was one of the women who couldn’t afford to insulate herself from potential physical harm and who fell into the categories of both domestic abuse and sexual assault victim. Large numbers of women who’ve never been poor, who’ve never worked the kind of job where they’d be vulnerable to predatory men and who’ve never needed a rape crisis centre have spent the last few years vilifying members of their own sex for fighting to retain their hard-won rights and single-sex spaces, in ways that have shocked and disgusted me. I freely confess that I feel an extra layer of abhorrence for any woman who claims to be a feminist while doing it."

THIS ⬆🔥

I read this too blinking through big tears

IwantToRetire · 21/10/2026 19:05

I agree that what she has written is really powerful.

And almost (not a criticism - would I dare?) to calm and rational.

Agree with PP who suggested we send it to MPs, local councillors, etc..

She has given us this via social media, but the real fight isn't anything as irrelevant as reddit, are those who have power, and have been using it to obstruct women's sex based rights.

The MPs etc., should be asked to say what part if any can they criticise.

And as public figures themselves think about whether they are creating an atmosphere where women who speak out in public life, and potentially in danger.

Flowers JKR

Helleofabore · 21/10/2026 19:04

Thank you JK!

Wishesandhorses · 21/10/2026 19:02

Wonderful woman, that is so clearly expressed.

The information we all suspected, that women in Edinburgh were going for years without help due to the man in charge of the public funded rape crisis services and their man-centred ethos, and that activists tried hard to stop women being able to access Beira's place for help - it's helpful to see it confirmed, although awful too. It's wicked. Absolutely and inexcusably wicked.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 21/10/2026 19:01

MarcTheGenderSkeptic · 21/10/2026 18:33

What makes Rowling's words even more powerful and prescient, is that they shouldn't be needed to be said. They're so common sensical, so logical, so old school liberal.
Yet in the broader sphere, vanishingly few people in her position of visibility and influence, what you might call the liberal intelligentsia, come close to saying them.
So her words by their very simple truth while others are afraid to speak the truth also, gain greater relevance and significance.

And this. Who, in the Labour Party, for example, would be prepared to stand up and say, no ifs or buts, I fully agree with JKR?

BlueLegume · 21/10/2026 18:45
