"We" can always tell

Except when "we" can't:

Note the weasel words of the thread don't actually apologise for allowing terrible people to decide the victim wasn't female because she wasn't sufficiently meeting a stereotypical view of how women should look in their bigoted opinions. The fault for behaving in a bigoted fashion is only that of the bigots and no-one else.

MN has always been very thorough in its moderation and years ago many people were banned. This was before the concept of free speech and a right to hold certain views was affirmed in law, though posts are still frequently removed when they really do infringe the rules.

The concept of free speech and the right to hold view was affirmed in law a long, long time before MN was even set up.

Or they have no idea of what is and isn’t acceptable.

We know full well people start threads on here for spurious reasons, and as it was deleted possibly nobody knows who started it let alone why.

That MN rethink whether they want to be a hub for behaviour that includes going off site to harass the family of a murder victim and write awful posts about the victim herself because they think she is trans.

Luckily that’s not what happened here. I’m amazed you’re positing on such a den of vipers; forum!

The account was attacked by GC people because they believed the murdered woman was trans. Members on this board shared it to amplify the attacks. They didn't care about this woman - they just saw a trans person being murdered and decided it was fair game. The fact that she wasn't trans didn't matter to them - she wasn't sufficiently feminine enough for their liking. The hypocrisy is vile.

How do you know they were ‘GC’? Are you just presuming?

The fact they started it shows what type of place this has become.

It's a bit like if someone shows up to your party with all the equipment to shoot up. At some point, you've given the impression that you're okay with recreational heroin to someone in attendance and you might want to rethink how you present yourself.

Or they have no idea of what is and isn’t acceptable.

Shortshriftandlethal · 15/10/2026 08:18

This is not a club that people can join, as such. It has long been the main, often only, place where people could discuss a subject that is deeply important to them. That is why there is a general consensus on key issues related to it. Beyond that - it is a free and open forum and I, for example, are not responsibile for what other people post - only for my own content.

Lexibletheflexible · 15/10/2026 08:11

They should ban them. Of course. This isnt about who thinks what or who is right about trans people.

In summary your thoughts are;

"Note the weasel words of the thread don't actually apologise for allowing terrible people to decide the victim wasn't female because she wasn't sufficiently meeting a stereotypical view of how women should look in their bigoted opinions. The fault for behaving in a bigoted fashion is only that of the bigots and no-one else."

About a situation on X, which was corrected and apologised for.

You then claim that because there was a thread on MN, the family suffered harassment.

When it is pointed out that MN have nothing to do with that behaviour, you switch to saying MN should be more responsible.

You say you have engaged and haven't seen a response.

It turns out that the thread on MN had very little engagement and was also removed.

So what is your reason for starting this thread?

Shedmistress · 15/10/2026 08:16

Lexibletheflexible · 15/10/2026 08:13

I dont think all conversations need to be shut down, I think MN need to rethink what it allows to stand and what users it allows to stay.

I have to go to work now. I'll be back this afternoon.

But they DIDN'T ALLOW IT TO STAND?

Right? Because it was deleted?

Because at least one poster from here shared the post here to get people to go and harass the victim.

That is a wild accusation. You should be reported but I'm letting it stand to show just how far gone you are. You have lost all proportion on this subject.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 15/10/2026 08:10

Jesus Christ. Someone genuinely thinks it's reasonable to shut down an entire site of women's conversions about a malicious social movement that seeks to undefine us politically, legally and socially because one post was written about a mistake that had also lead some other people, somewhere else, to act like shits.

One cannot help but wonder why they are so much more exercised by the one post here than the creeds of misogynist bile on reddit and other places leading to young men developing deeply disturbing attitudes and behaviour towards women.

One might, indeed, think it's not about that one post at all, but simply another excuse to carry on an existing vendetta.

I suggest whatever is posted here you won't like the content, the tone, or any of the general suppositions engaged with by the majority.

Interesting.

On the r/transwomen Reddit thread, they consistently encourage violence towards women who don't comply with transgender ideology. What actions do you think Reddit should take about that?

They should ban them. Of course. This isnt about who thinks what or who is right about trans people.

One person (not members plural) posted a link to the story on X. They were told - this time actually by members, plural - that it was a horrible thread to start. They got about five replies from memory (ie barely anyone engaged) all expressing distaste. The thread was taken down - presumably because it was reported. Of course there are some posters who are now suggesting that the only reason that members wanted it removed was to ‘hide the transphobia’ that is apparently rampant. Unfortunately for them the evidence doesn’t really support that claim.

Quite a bit. Especially since they actualy don't have to follow laws and can kick anyone out for any reason. You don't have to have proof that would convince a jury or judge that someone is toxic for the culture of the site. You can jhst ban them because they say some toxic shit.

No I mean here. Of course Musk won't ban people for that type of thing. But therr is a lot we can say about Musk generally. Do staff here want the reputation of Elon Musk?

People can start threads about pretty much anything.

Are you wanting all threads to be approved before they are posted?

Or all posts?

Edited

No, I want comments that encourage hate and harassment as well as their commenters to be removed as members

So you could have some empathy with the author of the X thread in that you have written something inflammatory on the internet before getting the whole story.

What level of responsibility do you think Mumsnet/Reddit etc carries for the behaviour of anonymous internet users that post on their site?

It is the responsibility of the site if they allow posts and a general culture that nurture this type of behaviour. If people think they can come here and share a post like that about a murder victim, then the site is part of the problem here.
