pronouns on booking form

What would you put in a form when it demands you fill in the pronoun box or it won't submit, and there is a danger said pronouns will be printed on the name badges? It's a professional conference.

I wasn’t laughing at consent. I was laughing at you using it here. Consent is serious, which is exactly why I don’t think it should be dragged into an argument about a tick box on a booking form.
Go back and read my comments. At no point did I say you couldn’t say no. You can say no all day long. What I said was that I thought it was a disproportionate fuss over something that costs you a second and has no consequences for you. “Just tick the box” was obviously shorthand for “you could just tick the box”. Nobody was ordering you to do anything, and I think you know that.

Here’s an example. Someone’s asked for her name at Starbucks so they can call her when her coffee’s ready. She says “No, I don’t want to.” I’d think that’s a bit odd and say “it’s only so they can shout you when it’s done.” She says “NO.” I’d say “okay, weird hill to die on, but you do you.” That isn’t me denying her right to say no. It’s me thinking the no is petty and a bit precious. Both things can be true.

Having the right to say no doesn’t make every no a reasonable one. Women’s can be unreasonable, men’s can be unreasonable, and so can anyone else’s. Saying “that seems disproportionate” isn’t overriding someone’s autonomy, and suggesting it is waters down something that actually matters. There are women whose no really is ignored, and they deserve better than having the language borrowed for a disagreement over a form.

You would actually say that to a customer? And you are telling other people what harms them and what doesn’t?

I can think of quite a few valid reasons why someone wouldn’t want to give their name to someone, have it called out in a stroke or have it written on their drink. Yet you would shame them.

And people have got valid reasons for not wanting to give their pronouns.

FlatCatYellowMat · 14/10/2026 06:37

It would harm me - already here people have assumed that women who put she/her pronouns in their signatures are 'cis'

That's the exact thing I've been fighting most of my life - from the first time I was given a baby doll for Christmas when what I wanted was a toy aeroplane like my brother. Or when I was made to wear a skirt to school, or hounded out of A-level physics by a misogynist teacher.

I don't understand what you mean by harm.
Also, I really don't understand why women need to be so cognizant of this indeterminate harm to an undefined group of people, when the very real harms to women resulting from gender ideology are dismissed and speaking out about them is called hateful.

Manyanamanyana · 14/10/2026 05:36

Boiledbeetle · 13/10/2026 23:24

Do you always have such an issue accepting a woman's right to say no?

Telling isn't it, how it always comes down to this.
"Just do it bitch"

Don't do it OP!

I’m sorry that you’ve experienced abuse, that’s not okay. I’m not an idiot or a sheep, and I’m fine with putting my pronouns (which align with how I’m most likely to be perceived as and with my biological sex), because I know that others feel like this is important for them and they see it as a sign of respect to use the ones they know I am comfortable with.

Respect works both ways. Subscribing to the idea of a gender identity (again, made up with no basis in science) harms girls and women. Good for you that you are ok with going along with a misogynistic ideology, but some of us feel quite strongly about it.

"Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapiki/Maungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu"

And if they refuse to acknowledge your pronoun identity in full, they are hateful bigots who deserve to be cancelled.

I live in NZ and this looks like the longest name of a place.

There is even a song about it.

For those of you saying ‘just put it down, it doesn’t matter’ - it feels as weird and inappropriate as if there were a box on my name badge for religion - I could just write ‘atheist’ or ‘N/A’ - but why the fuck should I? Why would a work meeting need that to be displayed on my chest - irrelevant and inappropriate and intrusive.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 14/10/2026 00:07

SeasideWalkaroundStore · 13/10/2026 22:41

I think this is a very, very pertinent point that is oven overlooked: that the vast, vast majority of people simply do not care. Yes, they would be very surprised if a native English speaker with good eyesight, who had seen them, got the basic, boring grammatical rules wrong; but ultimately, it's an absolute tedious non-issue.

It's the equivalent of being a 4yo who is invited to a big exciting party, and being given a badge with your name on it and a huge blank space next to it for you to draw your favourite dinosaur - which is extremely important for you to do (mummy will help you with the crayons if you ask her nicely), as if you don't do it, everybody else in attendance will have to spend the whole party not knowing your preference!

And here we have the perfect answer to the original question. As it's a free text box, use it to inform people of your favourite dinosaur.

Not speaking Maori, I had to make my best guess on placement of word breaks.

How did I do? [Image of translation attached, pending approval.]

It doesn’t harm me? Yes, it does. It indicates that that person believes in a harmful ideology, an ideology that doesn’t care about women’s boundaries. The kind of person who feels strongly about pronouns is also the kind of person who will hurl abuse at women for not accepting men in their spaces (see the parkrun thread for examples).
It tells me that that person is an idiot or a sheep. Or even that they could be abusive.

So no, I absolutely will not put my pronouns on anything and I am wary of anyone who does.

DingyHall2026 · 13/10/2026 23:44

People often get mine wrong if they've not met me as I have a man's name. Ask my patents why. And very occasionally people have looked genuinely confused when I introduce myself by my name because I'm 5' 5" with a big bust. Oh and I'm Dr so they can't tell what sex I am easily by checking my title

Somehow we all manage
I don't mind if people call me he despite being clearly a woman. But most people manage to work it out. And the one who really can't / aren't sure, it doesn't matter. Thankfully my Doctors and midwives etc are aware I'm female. My work colleague don't need to know.

I haven't included my pronouns in my email signature, and no one has ever got them wrong, commented on them, or let them affect any interaction.

People have much better things to do with their day. I usually leave it blank or say prefer not to say.

What pronouns people use for me is none of my business.

RedCatta · 13/10/2026 23:31

GreenwayHouse · 13/10/2026 23:27

It’s not making a fuss for no reason at all.
The use of pronouns indicates that you adhere to an harmful ideology and I don’t adhere to it. I think it’s all complete nonsense. So I won’t put my pronouns on any work signatures, conference badges, LinkedIn bios etc and I am always a little wary of people who compel others to do so. In my last team, at a very big and well known UK organisation, we got lectured in a meeting by an earnest 24 year old for not including our pronouns in our work signatures. How dare she!

That’s like saying why Should you write your name if you’re not using it. It’s ticking a box, just tick whatever if you don’t mind how people refer to you, takes less than a second to tick the box then get on with your day . You must have not a lot going on for something you don’t care about to bother you this much- it’s a couple of words on a badge and a second of your life.

The problem with quoting Yogyakarta principles is that a) to the average lay person they sound as silly and as made up as announcing pronouns and b) they still give credence to the concept of gender identity which is bullshit.

Let’s just not pander. Just put a full stop.
