Single-sex lavatories to be mandatory in all new public buildings

I really like the phrase “forced sharing” - I think we should use it more often as it sums up the lack of consent in shared facilities - unlike the neutral sounding 'gender neutral' .

Anyway, good news - I think this is building something that was initially announced by Robert Jenrick last year but got a bit lost after his demotion:

"New office buildings, schools, hospitals and entertainment venues must have separate male and female lavatories, ministers will declare this week, in a move to rein in the “forced sharing” of gender-neutral facilities.

The Telegraph understands that the Government will formally announce that it is acting to prevent non-residential buildings from being built solely with “universal” lavatories. The move will involve changes to building regulations and planning guidance.

The plans, being spearheaded by Kemi Badenoch, the equalities minister, were quietly approved by ministers last month after Mrs Badenoch was warned that some children were avoiding using lavatories at school because they only had access to gender-neutral facilities.

Mrs Badenoch has insisted that it is both legal and “important” to provide single-sex spaces for men and women."

If we could replace Boris with Kemi I'd be a very happy woman.

It's good there will be UK policy to protect women and girls in future public buildings. This can set an international precedent. I was in a top Uni when the gender neutral loos were brought in. I was all for gender free ideology until l had to pee in an underground loo stall with 2 hormonal guys on either side of me. I didn't feel safe. There was a physicality to them and an interest in me, watching and listening, which was scary. I got out asap and did not return. There is a big gap between the, let's all be the same, idea, to the reality of how vulnerable women and girls can be when unprotected. Protect Women and Girls!

@ILoveAllRainbowsx

BJ needs to get his shit together (give up the booze and the one night stands, settle down, in a quiet little town...) or step aside for someone who can administrate better.

I see what you did there, achilles ;o) Agreed - Blo Jo should swap Downing Street for Baker Street.

Datun · 03/07/2022 21:34

Two, you have no idea on who is treats and who is not. The amounting my lesbian gfs that get challenged is just despicable. But hey….

Well, according to you, lesbians can be male, which is why they're challenged.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 03/07/2022 21:06

Forced sharing is a great way to put it.

I don't think enough tory voters will be put off, not by a longshot. The lifelong tory voters won't be so easily put off.

Dont be too sure about that, a week is a long time in politics and Johnson seems to have survived the byelection defeats. Even so I doubt he will lead the Tories in 12 months time, also Starmer has got to do a lot more to win an outright majority.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 03/07/2022 15:50

I am so pleased about this.

However, seeing as the Conservaties and Boris in particular are doing everything possible to ensure that they will never again be in government, I assume that as soon as we have a change of government, then this will just be reversed?

Interesting response from PP. I can't tell someone's sexual preference on sight (nor do I care to) but 99% of the time I'm going to know their sex on first glance. So silly to pretend humans can't read someone's sex without looking at their genitals 🙄

I'm fed up of the forced sharing. Single sex spaces should mean that. I was talking to friends of mine about the destruction of single sex services whilst sitting in a nice restaurant in rural France last week. My female friend couldn't believe what she was hearing. Her male partner backed me up, he's been following the unfolding scandal too She said "Well that wouldn't happen here in France". I told her she was most definitely wrong and suggested she visit the loo - on the premises we were eating in: they offered two identical self contained toilets, one for men only and the other? Gender neutral and disabled... gotta make sure those men are catered for, eh? Naturally, I self identified and chose the cleanest.

ChristinaXYZ · 03/07/2022 19:42

That's really depressing @ILoveAllRainbowsx (and thanks for the link). I also don't get why people cannot see the link between Labour's economic irresponsibility in their last term and the Tories' austerity budgets of the 2010 parliament. (though the Tories are messing the economy up as much as Labour at the moment).

I think people say they won't vote Tory because they think it makes them a good person or something - yet when you think of the antisemitism and misogyny that the Labour Party has shown ideologically why would any one thing voting Labour makes you on the side of the angels. Most people are way behind what is happening in real time. I've voted Labour many times but I would be embarrassed to do so this time.

I have always been a floating voter - listen to both sides, have family and friends on both sides. I know, because of this, that most Conservatives do not think 'we're ok so stuff the poor' - they genuinely think the best way to help everyone is a free market. And most people are free market enough when it comes to their own household income and out goings whatever they vote. There is a lot of hypocrisy on the left and most on the left are too blind to see.

I will vote for the Tories because of women's rights, free speech, the state of universities, RSE in schools and because they do not suffer from the poverty of low expectations and because eventually someone will have to sort the economy and only a Tory will.

Eventually the Tories who are not nasty but tend to be weak and lazy (less so the women Tories) will be useless even at the economy and will have to go. I'd like the Labour Party back by then please!

I have recently had to implement single user gender neutral toilets in a building because I was instructed to by company (public sector) policy.

Does this mean that those type (single room, floor to ceiling walls, proper door and hand wash contained within) will no longer be permitted or just that we have to provide single sex as well? Because it's going to be quite easy to reverse if it's "as well" but will be almost impossible if it's "only single sex allowed"...

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 03/07/2022 19:26

Good to go back to the sensible and common sense single sex toilets, but it won't stop [transwomen] or even just perverts who will say they identify as whatever.

Establishing the social norm that women have a right to their own spaces does in fact do quite a lot to stop perverts who want to invade those spaces... the perverts have got bold lately because the social norm has been eroded.

@ChristinaXYZ

I just asked someone on the Mick Lynch thread who said that the Tories were too right wing, what they thought about Labour and Lib Dem's policies on single sex toilets.

www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4575051-mick-lynch

She said that she is in favour of single sex toilets and is thinking of voting for the Green party.

She did not realise that the Greens are even worse.

When are the Tories going to play their trump card?

BootsAndRoots · 03/07/2022 19:08

The use of unisex toilets is to avoid the whole trans debate. Unisex toilets doesn't mean trans women in women's toilets, it means both men and women use the same facilities. It's exactly the same as banning religious clothing, which only existed to ban full face coverings, but they had to ban crucifixes so as not to be seen as Islamaphobic.

Wherever I've seen unisex toilets in operation, no one likes it. The men don't like, the women don't like it. The people who implement such policy decisions are fine because they have private toilets.

The debate around trans women (or really self-IDing women) in women's toilets only comes into play with single sex toilets, and unisex toilets are a fudge.

Isn't it more likely there will be a hung parliament with the Tories and either lib dem or labour? The problem with the other two is they don't have the strong leadership that got Blair elected.

I'm no Tory but I will probably vote Conservative next election, they are casting for the female vote but I'm sure many will just spoil their ballots rather than vote for them. Meanwhile I'm sure Tory strongholds such as where I am won't change suit.

Sleaze aside, personally I fail to see how the other two parties can actually improve things for average Jo anyway, we're screwed with inflation ATM.

@Musomama1

Yes, it is likely to be, but Labour and the Lib Dems will go in to coalition with each other. Neither party would do a deal with the Tories.

Artichokeleaves · 03/07/2022 18:30

I'd also point out that butch type women had no problems at all until female people had to start being very wary because male people insisted on being in their spaces whether or not those female people consented.

Female people didn't cause this. Go and talk to the owners and initiators of this particular problem. Hint: the solution can't be 'females shut up, give up and do what males want without argument'.

ThinkingaboutLangClegosaurus · 03/07/2022 18:30

MishyJDI · 03/07/2022 16:29

Means little to trans women as they are protected under the EA2010 and will keep using the female facilities, GRA or not. So they will happily support as well. What it will result in is for more self gender or sexual policing by women who suspect other women of looking not female. Ouch for the butch lesbians and those who don’t fit a 1950s stereotype of women.

Hardly Progressive feminism….

This is wholly the fault of males who use women’s facilities. I was never bothered by masculine-looking women in toilets or changing rooms (because they were women) until this recent push to let self-IDing transwomen in, which of course allows any man in too. Now I know that anyone who looks like a man may well be one.

What's your alternative?

That females who cant use mixed sex spaces just quietly cede their equal rights to public access to facilities because males are going to do their thing and have all the choices and couldn't give a shit about the impact of their actions on those women?

How is that more 'progressive'? Or 'feminist'?

Bored to death with this silliness now. Words have meaning. And yes I saw India Willoughby's tweet a couple of weekends ago about seeing the women's main toilets being re designated (for India and others who insist they can't use toilets for their sex) as gender neutral, with a sign on the door saying that women who needed a single sex facility could find one located some way off. And India (and others) gleefully made a point of going and using that single sex facility.

Which is sheer literal pissing on territory to ensure that any non compliant females know their place. That's flat out male privilege, it's disgusting behaviour. Fully intentional, fully aware of what it's doing to vulnerable women, fully aware that they have power and can displace those women because they want to. And celebrating it.

So what's your solution here if you're actually into kindness and inclusion and accessibility? Or are you just going to own male supremacism and defend it? I'd love to know.

Oh mate, do you really think that? I can tell a butch woman from a male, we all can 😂 and no, the EA2010 doesn't mean males can use female facilities automatically.

First I’m not your mate as I don’t do exclusion. Two, you have no idea on who is treats and who is not. The amounting my lesbian gfs that get challenged is just despicable. But hey….

Quite. And that's why no males should enter the women's toilets or changing rooms, because we cannot tell who is trans (and just wants to piss), and who is not (and is just taking the piss).

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 03/07/2022 17:56

@ChristinaXYZ

When will the Tory party tell women (and caring men) what will happen if they let Labour and the Lib Dems in to government?

This issue of single sex toilets is so important to women and the Conservatives should be spelling out what Labour and the Lib Dems would do if they were in power. But they are not.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 03/07/2022 17:49

ChristinaXYZ · 03/07/2022 17:43

That I agree with @ILoveAllRainbowsx - the consequences for women of the Tories losing power will be horrendous. (sentences I never thought I'd type).

I'd like to vote Labour again one day. But not till everyone of this bunch of idiots in the shadow cabinet are long gone.

@ChristinaXYZ

But if the women on MN are so anti-Tory, (you just have to look at the recent Mick Lynch thread), then what hope is there that women in general will realise what they are voting for in regards to women's rights?

The women who contribute to the Mick Lynch thread were mainly articulate and educated (although a lot of them do not understand basic economics, but then neither do most of the general population). But they want the Tories out. They must know about trans issues, single sex toilet, JKR etc as you can't avoid it on MN. But they don't care as long as they Tories don't get in again.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 03/07/2022 17:49

Politics are such a shit show at the moment - I despair. But then I have a little laugh at the fantasists who believe people can't accurately sex each other Grin Grin
In the history of the world, only women have given birth yet still the flat earthers try to pretend otherwise.

@ChristinaXYZ

I hope you are correct (for the sake of women's rights, if nothing else).

But if Labour and the Lib Dems have any sense, they will get their voters to vote tactically and so although, I agree that Labour will never form a majority government, they will be able to form a coalition with the Lib Dems as Labour won't have the idiotic Gordon Brown like in 2010.

What will happen to women and girls if this happens?

The women on here are so anti-Tory and I can't blame them but do they don't they realise what they will be voting for if they vote the Tories out?

MintJulia · 03/07/2022 17:38

Thank goodness. Frankly I'd rather pee in a field than go in a unisex loo.

I've stopped working at Oxford Uni because all their loos are unisex and the stench is unbearable
