I just came out as GC at work, to the big boss and I feel a bit sick

I have NCed for this. I have just outed myself as GC in work to the big boss (and some others cced in).

I was asked to sign off on something that I just couldn't and I said so, and explained why.

I literally feel sick. Like I have put a big fat GC target on my back. My org is totally woke. I wonder how many times my response has been forwarded already.

"Gender Critical" recognises that gender roles and stereotypes are harmful to both males and females, and should not form the basis of medical treatment, as they currently do (e.g. if you're a girl and play with "girls' toys" that's fine but if you are a boy it's a symptom of gender dysphoria - see halfway down this page). www.psychiatry.org/patients-families/gender-dysphoria/what-is-gender-dysphoria )

OP, I take my hat off to you. That really is brave. Massively well done and glad to hear the response so far is positive. Good luck with that friend and the others who are quiet so far.

@Wineat5isfine

Thank you Shizuku!
That’s an unashamedly biased answer from Shizuku, rather than an objective definition.

Shizuku is not someone who identifies as GC, to the best of my belief; someone who in fact is very anti-GC.

Being GC is not about being critical of trans people, but of transgenderist ideology. We are critical of that ideology because we see it as being rooted in sexist stereotypes, and as undermining women’s (much needed) sex-based rights.

IMO there’s a lot of misogyny in current transgenderist ideology, as well as homophobia (same-sex attraction is invalidated under this ideology and replaced by “same gender” attraction, which often ends up being opposite sex).

I don’t think that it’s progressive or even reasonable to refer to biologically male people who are attracted to biologically female people as “lesbians”, for example.

Sorry, that's to wineat5isfine!

These two threads will help a lot. The first is basically devoted to your question!

Another fist bump, OP & Flowers

BernardBlackMissesLangCleg · 15/04/2021 13:17

Well done, another virtual fist bump here

I work in very unwoke field, so generally conflation of sex and gender is just people trying to be’naice’, and I’ve been able to unpick it at no personal risk

You’re brave OP.

Margie70 · 15/04/2021 13:15

Sending you a hug and handhold. I’m so glad I’m retired now and don’t have to deal with that shit. You are brave to do this, and on the side of common sense.. not always so common in the wokedom.

ANewCreation · 15/04/2021 13:14

Gender critical - recognising that a woman is an adult human female, that women and girls are discriminated against because of their biology, and that gender is primarily a tool of the patriarchy used to oppress women.

Brilliant succinct summary of the Gender Critical position. Thanks, nocoolnamesleft - will file that one away!

Sophoclesthefox · 15/04/2021 13:12

wineat5, “Gender critical” is used by some feminists to underline our opposition to the increased push in public life to replace the concept of “sex” with that of “gender”. To give you an example, many people feel it’s important to maintain single sex provisions like women only sports, rather than changing them to being single gender, which would mean including transwomen on the basis of their gender rather than their sex. The reason for this is because of the implications for safety and fairness due to the number differences (strength, size, speed etc) between male and female bodies. Hope that helps?

OhHolyJesus · 15/04/2021 13:12

Gender critical = critical of 'gender' stereotypes and how they are applied or expected, based on sex.

Clearly from personal definitions already noted it can be interpreted in different ways.

It's also worth noting, much to what is often claimed, that there is no 'hive mjnd' here, or in the so-called 'GC movement'.

That's hard, especially if you're going against friends. Well done though. Who would have thought speaking up for women's rights would require courage in this day.

It wasn't even a personal line in the sand, it for me is about the lack of assessment and management of risk (actual and reputational) around use of language in materials that would have our logo on them.

I let my personal line in the sand get trampled over long ago.

This is very brave and I hope as time goes on you are ok at work.

This is so very divisive and I really hope you are ok. No one should be compelled to do something they are uncomfortable with for the sake of keeping their job.

Take heart, you are not alone. Best to do it before more requests follow as well.

Leafstamp · 15/04/2021 12:54

@FidgetWonkham

GC = gender critical

I’m guessing OP couldn’t sign off on something that was conflating sex and gender. In these instances there is often a contravention of the Equalities Act, so therefore should not be signed off on by anyone who wants to keep their job.

Of course, this is just my guess and if I was OP I’d be careful about giving out further details due to protecting my identity and confidentiality at work.
