Stella Creasy fails to join the dots

Stella Creasy has put forward an Equal Pay Bill which would allow women to know what male colleagues earn, in an attempt to bridge the pay gap. Which is great, but since she believes a woman is anyone who says they are a woman, how would it be possible to get accurate data and comparators? Yet again, it shows that conflating sex and gender just obfuscates the issues that really matter to women.

She's just self-serving.

That's what her words and actions say to me too.

@RoyalCorgi

I've given up trying to work out what goes on in the mind of people like Creasy. Genuinely so dim she doesn't understand what's going on? Or capable of understanding it but chooses to pretend not to because appearing to be woke is more important to her than doing the morally right thing?
I think it's the latter @RoyalCorgi . She's not dim. She's just self-serving.

@BaronessWrongCrowd

Stella Creasy has connected the dots alright. She's just studiously ignoring the pattern.
This.
ArabellaScott · 21/10/2020 09:59

If one steps back and looks at the broader picture: protecting women's rights in law against maternity/pregnancy discrimination could be very expensive. So one way to nix that would be to effectively make the sexes into genders and genders interchangeable. So then it would be impossible to legally have exemptions or discrimination on grounds of sex. Gender is arbitrary and chosen according to some internal feeling that can't be defined.

Of course if this was the aim we'd expect to see campaigns to scrap or abolish the exemptions in the Equality Act and we are told frequently that nobody is trying to do this.

IIRC there was an American poster on here a while back who was of the opinion that the main purpose of the amazingly well funded trans movement was precisely to wipe out women's fledgling sex based rights and protections.

I've long been convinced that this is the case. It's too targeted, too well-funded. Too many organisations involved. It's a systematic attempt to erode the rights of women and girls.

Brinton not Bristol!

Kit19 · 21/10/2020 07:57

Well at the “ask her to stand” event to get more women into parliament Sal Bristol of the Lib Dem’s confirmed that they’d be happy with a parliament being 50% men & 50% TW so I guess they’d be fine with that on Boards too

EdgeOfACoin · 21/10/2020 07:43

I had a conversation with a guy at work who is in favour of sex-based quotas. I am not in favour of quotas at all, but that’s a different story.

Anyway, he saw absolutely no problem with allowing a biological male taking a place reserved for women. Couldn’t understand why there would be any issues there at all.

I wonder whether all woke women would be happy with a board made up 100% of biological males, 50% of whom identify as women.

PurpleHoodie · 21/10/2020 07:29

highame Increasingly they will be.

PurpleHoodie · 21/10/2020 07:27

Consider also this scenario.

The military does not want women in it (at certain levels). Or openly gay men.

The Transwomen = Women narrative means 'women' can now join the military, and open male homosexuality is cancelled.

Around 12-18 months ago something happened in the British army that made me sit up and think "Ah. That's why they want the TWAW narrative pushed through. Can't remember what at the moment but is was in a mainstream (UK) news source.

highame · 21/10/2020 07:26

If that's true, then those young women who are kiiiind are going to be pretty hacked off

It's an excellent point.

@Redshoeblueshoe

If I was a cynical bastard starting a business I would only employ men and transwomen. Equal pay No maternity leave And probably collect a mass of awards for being such an inclusive employer. 2020 what a time to be alive Haloween Sad
Actually you'd want to hire women and pay them less and sack them when they got pregnant but be in the handy legal position that they couldn't sue you for discrimination against them as a woman anymore because some men have babies and lower pay too.

I just don't think that legislation like this connects the dots in a lot of ways. It doesn't consider the implications around privacy as pointed out. And while I think you could argue that the ability to see the data and how gaps work might justify some kind of transparency that impinges on privacy, I also think privacy is actually something that has to be thought about carefully, and the implications in other areas.

And then, I am just not sure how useful this would be. Most of the pay gap isn't about people in the same job or even type of job, at the same level, being paid differently. It's a more complex reality. So it seems like it might not even be all that revealing or useful. Kind of a waste of effort and difficult to justify publishing private information if so.

lilmishap · 21/10/2020 00:10

Equal pay
No maternity leave

It's cheaper to employ Women and Trans men, they just insist on all this 'maternity leave', 'sick kid', 'not a bloke' and 'the childcare' nonsense. It's also clear some [all non-trans]women are a bit too impregnable to be valued.

Not 'cynical bastard' just 'sensible business' now it's been made possible again.

Fucking hell it's scary enough that a tongue in cheek comment on mumsnet makes your blood run cold.

Pick a bloody side Stella.

Whatwouldscullydo · 20/10/2020 23:01

She has joined the dots. But she's now in the position of having to keep going with it. If she backs out she looks stupid ajd gets all the abuse from the tras. But as she keeps going it will work itself to an impossible point where she has to do a nandy or a butler or a swinson . She will end up with zero credibility ajd eventually be called a transphobe anyway..

nauticant · 20/10/2020 22:38

There doesn't seem to be a ready way of archiving Creasy's dismissive response on twitter and how others replied, but foreshadowing when she decides to delete her tweet:

She’s the worst sort of coward. She knows what a man is but is too scared to speak out.

She’ll be the first to back track when the house of card falls

Artesia · 20/10/2020 22:17

@ArabellaScott - you are right. Salaries should be private. By "great" I meant attempts to bridge the pay gap, not the open access to salaries.

@Beamur

I think Stella wants to be known for her work for women. But she is toeing (and I suspect is on board with) the Labour line on what women are these days. Without seeing the dissonance.
Oh I think she'll definitely be remembered for how she has dealt with women...
EvenSupposing · 20/10/2020 22:14

Wow. She's really missed the point there with the school scenario hasn't she? Like, more than one would think a person could miss a point. To the extent that you wonder if she knows there are such things as points. Confused
