Why all the upset on Twitter (jameela?)

Seeing lots of upset posts from women I follow on twitter, something to do with jameela. I don’t really know who j is - I know she said she’d bought the book about women being blamed for everything (I follow the fab author but can’t remember her name). But what has happened to cause so much upset?

From Didn't JJ describe LF as 'a freshly wanked cock', or was that Piers Morgan??

TehBewilderness · 03/05/2020 21:22

Women are acting like people in public.
Shocking, innit?

NotAGirl · 03/05/2020 21:19

Jameela has a tendency to be rather unpleasant about anyone who the woke twitter crowd are going after, comes across as a bit of a bully tbh but because its to people who are getting a kicking from others she doesn't often get called out on it even though with her twitter audience she is encouraging a bigger pile on.
I don't have a screenshot but the one I noticed most recently was to Lawrence Fox. Now I'm no fan of his and imo he deserved some pushback on his 'he understands what it's like to be on the end of racism comments' (as he really doesn't) but not the nasty way she did

NeurotrashWarrior · 03/05/2020 20:56

Thanks for those links think. I like to think that I'm the future there will be a book written about girl in question, similar to the ones on Mala etc, for young girls to read and admire.

NeurotrashWarrior · 03/05/2020 20:53

She said that about subgroups?! Wow.

Men are not a sub group of women Angry

Whilst all this purity scrapping was going on a teenage school girl made a challenge to the CPS and made them stand down their outrageous guidance that threatened schoolgirls everywhere. This is real life activism and it's more useful than any amount long winded pontificating on twitter.

Star

There's a genuine heroine and someone worth celebrating. Here are a couple of threads that have been discussing her CPS case:

I know a lot of feminists don't like her because of her stance on trans issues but the stuff she posts on body positivity is brilliant. She's called out the Kardashians for promoting dangerous diet products. She's also talked about how she was overweight when she was younger and her very serious health issues were dismissed because of her weight. I've listened to her on a few podcasts and found her very likeable.

Melroses · 03/05/2020 12:37

Thank goodness for this. It gives me a lot of hope for the future.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 03/05/2020 12:17

I've tried to read some of her output but just find myself wanting to give her a hug and send her to her room with a good feminist book.

She just seems so bewildered.

BringbackLang · 03/05/2020 11:58

Jameela, to me, comes across as someone totally desperate for attention and popularity, is fickle and very easily led.
It is a concerning that she is listened to by young, impressionable people. However I don't believe she's in anyway a bad person, daft yes, someone who exaggerates, also yes, someone who will say anything to make her feel relevant, also yes.

I believe that she's not given this as much thought at all, it's the Cause De Jour and she's jumped on the bandwagon with both feet.

OvaHere · 03/05/2020 11:36

She's an idiot and Twitter is toxic and often far less important than it thinks it is.

Social media is always going to cultivate drama and infighting but in the meantime a lot of people are slogging away at a grassroots level and we are starting to see the results of that.

OhHolyJesus · 03/05/2020 11:36

I can't wait for her to get pregnant.

She did a video for 'trans' kids the other day and Mermaids went to town. They love her.

Zhuleva · 03/05/2020 11:34

She came out as 'queer' whatever the hell that means. Still going out with a bloke though, so about as 'queer' as my 80+ married parents.

Thinks trans women are women so obviously deluded.

ooooohbetty · 03/05/2020 11:30

She's a massive pia and wish everyone would ignore her so she eventually shuts up. She thinks she's very important and very clever.

Noooblerooble · 03/05/2020 11:19

Sadly there are many [subgroups]. Those who exclude POC. Those who exclude disability. Those who exclude fat women. Those who exclude trans. Those who exclude sex workers.

I would love to pin someone like Jameela down on these issues. Which specific feminist groups exclude 'fat women' or 'POC'? I think this is the kind of sentence that gets thrown around and has no substance behind it.

Yes, women in the BAME community don't get enough of a spotlight or support/understanding of their specific issues. Yes, many overweight women are treated terribly by society and are disadvantaged in certain ways.

But what she's really trying to say is 'some women aren't putting trans women at the heart of their feminism,' isn't she? The rest is all smoke and mirrors to disguise the fact she wants to put men first.

NotTerfNorCis · 03/05/2020 11:11

It looks like TRAs have latched onto this and are using it to make GC people like bad... they don't mention that they also laid into Jameela for promoting the wrong kind of feminist.

Nameofchanges · 03/05/2020 11:05

I dislike the complete writing off of Jameela Jamil.

She has had valuable feminist impact on younger women, being prepared to speak up about body shaming and sexism in the media.

Just because someone has repugnant views on some issues doesn’t mean that everything they say is useless.

R0wantrees · 03/05/2020 10:31

I know she said she’d bought the book about women being blamed for everything (I follow the fab author but can’t remember her name)

Dr Jessica Taylor has published 'Why Women are Blamed for Everything

She was interviewed recently about her work on Woman's Hour:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3888649-Dr-Jesicca-Taylor-on-R4-Womans-Hour-today-discussing-her-new-book-Why-Women-Are-Blamed-For-Everything-Exploring-Victim-Blaming-Of-Women-Subjected-to-Violence-and-Trauma

Yesterday Jessica Taylor tweeted:

"I’ve written a thing about all the shit cracking off around me in our feminism.

A thread.

Each tweet is one page.

Sorry it’s long, I tried to make a video but I’m so exhausted."

MrsL2016 · 03/05/2020 10:09

I saw some of what was happening on Twitter but missed a fair bit. This blog post explained it really well.

lydialambfruit.com/blog/post/319/gender-critical-or-jameela-critical/

Sorry I don't think it's clicky. There was also a furore about anonymous accounts.

Sittinonthefloor · 03/05/2020 10:04

Is jameela just a pontificating sleb? Is she a blogger?

OP posts:
Sittinonthefloor · 03/05/2020 10:02

Thank you for the link another, that is indeed what I was asking about! It does all sound a bit silly, hope GC people aren’t about to enter a purity spiral. If that is spinning next to the TRA purity spiral there might be some sort weird effect!

Lordfrontpaw · 03/05/2020 09:42

She is a bit daft. So desperate to appeal to the rainbow family but no one has explained the rules to her.

Thinks she knows best and is every so knowledgeable - so when she tweets something that gets her ‘friends’ upset, or if she is called out and gets a twitter-slap, she ends up crying, blaming some trauma or past ailment, then takes a break.

She pretty much looks down on women - her feminism centres ‘feeling’ not biology. She announced she was - what was it ‘queer’ - because she got a tv job that others decided should go to a rainbow person - her ‘friends’ were pretty much demanding she got the sack. She is in a long term relationship with a man and presents as very feminine. So ‘queer’ how..?

Horehound · 03/05/2020 09:41

Basically that book she bought was written by a woman who is gender critical.
Except jameela didn't realise this so she first posted a photo of the book and was so excited to read it. Someone then joked that they were awaiting for jameela to delete the post once she's cottoned on to the fact the author is gender critical and sure enough a few hours later she did.
She doesn't know her own mind basically

AnotherLass · 03/05/2020 09:38

I don't think that OP is really asking about Jameela but why all the GC feminists are shouting at each other on twitter.

There's already a thread on it

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3894510-Julie-Bindel-on-twitter

Horehound · 03/05/2020 09:38

She thinks trans women are women.
