I know there is a split of opinion about spoiling ballots vs voting for the least bad option.

If you do decide to spoil your ballot it feel free to post a photo of it here (be careful not to include any information that identifies you and in particular not to include the ballot's unique identification number) in case any of our loitering journalists wish to pick up the story or in the hope of giving the parties/candidates some pause for thought.

In case it is of interest (and you want a place to post your views for/against spoiling ballots), there have been a number of threads about spoiling ballots, a few links below:

Well I look forward to most of you proving me wrong and seeing tomorrow lots of headlines on the impact of your action.

Headlines not necessary thanks. This is the right thing for me to have done

bellinisurge · 12/12/2019 11:39

I just wrote None across the names. It broke my heart to do it and I had one last think before I did it. But I don't feel I had a choice.

nauticant · 12/12/2019 11:39

Anyway, it hasn't escaped my notice that this thread is full of people saying "this is what I'm doing/have done, here are my reasons, but you do what you feel is right" and the opposition going "what you're doing is wrong, this is what you must do instead". That sounds very familiar. It gets less persuasive each time.

littlecabbage · 12/12/2019 11:31

I've also spoilt my vote for the first time ever. I put a single continuous line through all boxes and wrote "NONE". Then I also wrote "Protect Women and Confused Children. NO to Gender Self ID".

I don't feel great about doing it but couldn't in good conscience vote for any of the candidates in my area. Even the tory candidate is strongly pro self-ID (but will v likely get in anyway).

nauticant · 12/12/2019 11:26

I respect your position completely hoodathunkit. For me I spoiled my ballot paper for the first time ever because to do anything that would appear to support the gender identity ideology would have felt wrong to me. I'm surprised at how much time I needed to spend thinking through this.

VMisaMarshmallow · 12/12/2019 11:26

Buzz off because you are repeatedly harassing women over using our democratic voice our way. Everyone has answered your questions numerous times, you clearly don’t want reasoned answers as you repeatedly go on about how you can’t have the heart to not vote for the poor and vulnerable (except you clearly are because women are vulnerable and you are voting our rights out of existence). So yeah buzz off and stop wasting our time.

hoodathunkit · 12/12/2019 11:22

I also think that it is an illusion that the tories do not support philosophies underpinning the GRA

Jo Swinson and Corbyn appear the most woke but the problem is a disturbing vein of delusions running through all parties

The same is true of antisemitism IMO, it may have been exposed the most openly in Labour but it runs through all parties including the Tories especially the nasty far right bunch of BJ associates

Thelnebriati · 12/12/2019 11:20

I wrote #sexnotgender.

hoodathunkit · 12/12/2019 11:18

Referring to a post above, using my vote to oppose Boris Johnson would have been voting to invite men identifying as women into women's single sex spaces. I'm not going to do that. (And yes, I did write to the Lib Dem candidate about this, and then heard nothing.)

I can definitely understand where you are coming from

However I think that it will be easier for us to challenge the threat to single sex spaces and related issues than it will be to challenge a hard brexit should BJ secure a majority

nauticant · 12/12/2019 11:16

In the end I decided not to vote for the foremost independent candidate (who doesn't stand a chance) and spoiled my vote. I wrote NONE with explanatory text that I couldn't support any candidate or party seeking to change the law to encourage men identifying as women to enter women's single sex spaces.

I will be voting tactically and am hoping for a hung parliament

I have a load of information and thoughts that I want to make public but have been prevented by incredibly stressful and demanding events in real life

One of the things I have been giving a lot of time to is supporting an extremely vulnerable friend through the process of reporting horrific violations against her to the police.

I cannot provide details of course, however one of the things i am supporting her with is her wish to make all kinds of drastic changes to her life, that will have long term consequences, all while she is in a state of great distress.

Having supported many women through similar situations I understand that there is a strong impulse to run away, to make drastic changes and to embark upon a new life.

I believe that the emotional turmoil of my friend resonates with the collective emotional turmoil that this country is facing and the resulting contitutional crisis.

During times of crisis individuals and groups experience a strong wish to make profound changes to their lives in the hope that it will make everything better.

Psychologists understand this very well and for this reason people who are going through a mental health crisis are usually advised not to buy a new car, file for divorce, get married, start a business or move to the other end of the country, etc.

It is not that these things are necessarly bad things to do. All or any of them might be the right thing for a person to do. The point is that descisions made in haste during a time of crisis often go catastrophically wrong and it is better to wait until a person's capacity to think and consider their choices is restored once their immediate crisis is over.

At least if we have a hung parliament it will allow time for certain things to be thought about, which is something that we definitely need.

For the record I have no faith whatsoever in the abilities of BJ, JC or JS

All of them and their parties have been undermined and compromosed by the kind of delusional magical thinking that underpins the trans rights narratives.

Everyone must do what is right for them of course but I think that tactical voting is the most constructive way forward

AbsintheFriends · 12/12/2019 11:06

My constituency was so marginal at the last election that they had to do 3 recounts. If the same thing happens again this time I imagine my paper (which has Woman = biology not "identity" written across the boxes) will get a bit of scrutiny in each one.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 12/12/2019 10:56

LoonyLunaLoo "I don’t really get spoiling your vote due to trans issues. I mean I get that it’s an issue but are you really prepared to sail the NHS down the river for it? I think that’s a much more important issue for women especially as we arguably have more healthcare needs than men due to gynaecological health, child birth, breast health, menopause etc.

Do you not understand how women's health and healthcare and options will be impacted if any man can be a woman? Really?

You're ok with being called a chest feeding menstruator with a front hole, while male women claim the label of woman? To lose all choice over who does your intimate healthcare? To be forced to validate those men who make a mockery of womanhood, and put yourself a distant second to their "needs"? To have already threadbare female-specific healthcare services taken by males who need a smear to validate their gender feeling?

Stopping this pivotal change is the hook upon which everything else hangs.

Cwenthryth · 12/12/2019 10:50

OnlyTheTit I’m with you 100% - have thought about this so much but being in a marginal I have come to the conclusions that I have to vote ABT, and here that is Labour. So thankful it’s not LDs, I don’t think I’d have been able to do that!

Will be lobbying the new MP straight away in any case, whatever colour she is.

Hats off to those of you making protest votes - please do share them. I hear you. Let’s amplify them as best we can.

TiredofthisBS · 12/12/2019 10:48

Good for you @tava63 that's your choice. Now please respect mine.

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 12/12/2019 10:46

TiredofthisBS I wrote to my candidate beforehand to ask her position on the rights of women and girls and setting out my grave concerns about self-ID and the impact that has on WaG. She personally seems to get it but obviously the real test will be after the election, if she is re-elected.

Thanks for your support, you lovely vipers you.

tava63 · 12/12/2019 10:45

Well I look forward to most of you proving me wrong and seeing tomorrow lots of headlines on the impact of your action. In the meantime I've taken my alleged internalised misogyny and platitudes (thank you for that LangCleg PJsatMidday) to the constituency next door to mine to campaign for someone who has taken a leading role in their party on this matter, and so many other issues that I support, and I am distributing leaflets and later calling out from a megaphone, to encourage people to VOTE for this person. For those of you still wondering what to do, some people I know have 'held their nose' and voted for someone in a Party they wouldn't normally vote for, they have followed this up with an email to that candidate explaining the basis for their vote - candidates and MPs are generally good at replying …… you likely won't get a response to your spoilt vote (but as I said at the start maybe I'll be proved wrong).

TiredofthisBS · 12/12/2019 10:43

I don't tell you who to vote for l, don't tell me how I should vote. There is a big long thread on why many of us are spoiling our votes. I suggest you read it before coming on to tell us what you think we should do.

TiredofthisBS · 12/12/2019 10:41

@GiloulovesLaure I think if you have a clear mark in one box only and leave the others empty that count as a vote. However if you put a cross or write no in each candidates box and right none then that is a spoilt vote.

LoonyLunaLoo · 12/12/2019 10:41

smemorata · 12/12/2019 10:39

If you want to protest then do it but don't spoil your vote. It's just a waste. Far better to vote and then lobby your MP.

averylongtimeago · 12/12/2019 10:39

I know how angry we all are about this- but please don't spoil your ballot paper, this election is too important. All votes will help keep Johnson and his extreme right wing Tory party out of power.

Unless you were going to vote Tory....

AllMumsyWereTheBorrowedClothes · 12/12/2019 10:35

Heading out with my 'little stickers' - how did it come to this? I've always voted. I'm the daughter of a woman born before any British woman even had a vote, but I cannot support this legalised misogyny.

OhHolyJesus · 12/12/2019 10:34

Upside down but I hope you can see another spoilt ballot to add to the pile.
