I know there is a split of opinion about spoiling ballots vs voting for the least bad option.

If you do decide to spoil your ballot it feel free to post a photo of it here (be careful not to include any information that identifies you and in particular not to include the ballot's unique identification number) in case any of our loitering journalists wish to pick up the story or in the hope of giving the parties/candidates some pause for thought.

In case it is of interest (and you want a place to post your views for/against spoiling ballots), there have been a number of threads about spoiling ballots, a few links below:

I think that if you put a cross against a name it will be counted for that name. Or if there is a dispute it would ultimately be counted.
I think we all have to face the fact that candidates are unlikely to actually read anything we put on a paper. I think we have to go for "numbers of spoiled papers ".
It's possible that a candidate might ask themselves "why did that voter turn out but not chose anyone "? And they might look at what is actually written. Most likely they will not.
But you do what your conscience tells you is the right thing to do. Whatever that is. If it isn't spoiling your ballot, consider something else. Write to the person elected as your MP. Write to the leader of the party you didn't vote for.

WotchaTalkinBoutWillis · 12/12/2019 12:40

This is a daft question, but if I put a cross in the box, and write a message on the ballot paper, will it still count?

Pretty sure that'd count as spoiling your vote.
Cross in the box and nothing else in order to count as far as I know
(Happy to be corrected)

GCAcademic · 12/12/2019 12:39

I spoilt my ballot. I'd thought about voting Conservative over the last 24 hours, but my Tory MP has told me that she completely agrees with me and has lots of concerns (as do her teenaged daughters, apparently) but that she is not going to speak publicly about this until it's possible to have a more sensible national conversation about it. So that will be never. And I can only therefore assume that she wouldn't vote against GRA reform if it came to it. I can't vote for such appalling cowardice. It's much worse than ignorance of the subject, in my book.

InTheShadowOfTheMushroomCloud · 12/12/2019 12:38

Just voted

Against every candidate I put a few words why I wasn't voting for them

Conservative- brexit
Labour - lily madigan
Lib Dem's - Aimee challinor
Greens - same as Lib Dem's

Then I put at the bottom

Transwomen are men, women do not have penises. Protect women's sex based rights.

Husband did similar

Floisme · 12/12/2019 12:38

I rather like the phrase 'disappointing women'.

AppleTree76 · 12/12/2019 12:37

@ShesDressedInBlackAgain are you 12?

ShesDressedInBlackAgain · 12/12/2019 12:36

there are more people for a GRC reform then against

Cool story bro.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/12/2019 12:34

This is a daft question, but if I put a cross in the box, and write a message on the ballot paper, will it still count? I want to vote, to send a message to the SNP that I do not support another independence referendum, but there is no other candidate in my constituency that I can support wholeheartedly.

We only have SNP, Tory, Labour and LibDem - there is no way I can vote Tory or SNP, and whilst I agree with some of the policies of the other two, I have major issues with some policies of each of them. The trans issue sticks in my craw when it comes to the LibDems, and I believe that Momentum and JC have taken the Labour party too far left for me (I was raised socialist but see myself very much in the centre ground).

I am heading out to vote soon, and I am still undecided what to do. My gut says LibDem but to put a message on the paper - Woman - Adult human female, probably - but I want my vote counted as opposing Indyref2.

Arghhhhhhhh.

Thelnebriati · 12/12/2019 12:33

A spoiled ballot is still a vote, and its a valid political protest.
Its better than not voting imho.

TiredofthisBS · 12/12/2019 12:32

I'll wear that disappointing woman badge with pride.

The suffragettes and suffragists fought for the right for women to vote. That gives us the right to not vote if we choose not to. I choose not to.

bellinisurge · 12/12/2019 12:31

"Some minor issue "😂😂😂
How patronising.
Do you seriously think that there is a settled national position on this that everyone has thought about. Or is it being sneaked in under the radar by people trying to distract attention from it. Obviously it's the latter.

Melroses · 12/12/2019 12:30

Well I got there with the green and purple pens, but we seem to have had a bit of a rearrangement with the polling station.

Usually it is a bit relaxed and they put the 'booths' (ie flimsy v-shaped cardboard) around a bit table. This time, they put them on single tables spaced out on the wall across the empty room from the door with BIG notices telling you to mark ONE cross, with officers at the side.

So I used the pencil on a string. Took a while but did it.

Do you think they are expecting a bit of ballot paper spoiling?

VMisaMarshmallow · 12/12/2019 12:28

Apple rtft and consider the numerous answers to this question already asked. Or if you are just coming here to tell us naughty women off you can buzz off too. Feel free to start your own thread, in the appropriate forum, about naughty naughty women who have disappointed you and leave the ones about spoiling votes to people who are doing so, considering doing so, or can respect that we are even if they feel they must vote differently.

Thamesis · 12/12/2019 12:25

Spoiled my ballot for first time ever. 'Woman = Adult Human Female'. Difficult but I'm in a v safe seat so not so hard a choice for me.

Thelnebriati · 12/12/2019 12:19

AppleTree76
Because we've kept up with current events and have seen it isn't a minor issue, and the majority don't support it once they understand the implications.
HTH.

PJsatMidday · 12/12/2019 12:16

Ooh, well, we mustn't be disappointing us silly women, eh.
RTFT.
Then read some bloody history. Do you actually know anything about the suffragettes? They didn't die so that, 100 years later, we would be handing the state of womanhood to men.

PJsatMidday · 12/12/2019 12:11

I've printed off the picture at the top of this thread to stick to my ballot. I'll add some wording as well about GRC reform. I'm going to vote after school and will take DD with me and explain what I am doing and why.

Anyone out there voting for a party, good luck to you, I hope you get what you want, and I am glad for you that you live in a constituency with a decent MP/prospective MP. I hope they repay your trust.

BTW, I don't report posts because somebody said something I don't agree with. Stifling debate is the remit of those who know they have no arguments.

AppleTree76 · 12/12/2019 12:09

Why are so many of you worrying and getting stressed about stuff that is so minor compared to NHS waiting lists, Lack of GPs, Lack Of Police, Global warming, Social Care Cuts, Poverty and Dangerous Living Conditions. You are wasting a vote that could potentially help change that. Because some minor issue that you will never be able to change because there are more people for a GRC reform then against. Your are wasting something that people died and went to prison to get! Disappointed in a lot women today! I thought we had more respect then this!

Thelnebriati · 12/12/2019 12:07

There is a much greater likelihood of us re-joining the EU than of reversing the legal and political erasure of women for the benefit a supposedly "more vulnerable" group.

This. We can see how scared people are to speak out now, imagine how frightening it will be when its illegal to do so.

These could be the last few months women exist in law.

VMisaMarshmallow · 12/12/2019 11:57

And I agree that tories support self ID as much as other parties. I think there may be a few more Tory candidates who are willing to speak up against the party, but only because I expect labour and ld gc candidates would be more scared the fully woke bros in their parties would be mock offended and shut them down instantly. I think perhaps the gc Tory candidates would find it easier to speak up in a Conservative party anyways, as they are less about being seen as what’s ‘trendy’ anyways.

I think there are very few gc candidates in any party currently, and even less willing to speak up, and I think all parties are as equally vicious in their misogyny.

VMisaMarshmallow · 12/12/2019 11:53

Sorry hood my post was a reply to wish not you, it looks a bit like it’s intended as a reply to your post and that’s not what I meant.

GCAcademic · 12/12/2019 11:52

However I think that it will be easier for us to challenge the threat to single sex spaces and related issues than it will be to challenge a hard brexit should BJ secure a majority

Once this is enshrined in law, there is no coming back from that. There is a much greater likelihood of us re-joining the EU than of reversing the legal and political erasure of women for the benefit a supposedly "more vulnerable" group.

bengalcat · 12/12/2019 11:51

Spoiling a vote effectively translates to " none of the above " I guess .

VMisaMarshmallow · 12/12/2019 11:44

Only, no one spoiling will be telling you how to use your vote. I get the need for others to vote for this. I have several disabilities and my daughters have several more, the Tory cuts have effected us too and I’m lucky I’m not in your position I’m aware. But I can no longer vote against my daughters rights and mine and all other women to benefit your husband and others like him.

This is a thread about spoiling votes, and while I’m sure all of us welcome others views and experiences that lead to not spoiling, or genuinely interested questions in why we are spoiling, what myself and others are objecting to is the posters who come on and berate us for being so ‘privileged’ we can ‘throw away’ our votes and tell us we are naughty naughty women for not thinking about the menz. Those turning up on feminism boards, on a thread for spoiling (not who are we all voting for) and try and manipulate us by appealing to standard female socialisation to put everyone else first is vile. And then they bring up suffragettes as if we are betraying them or some such bs. It’s like going over to a breastfeeding thread and belittling women for trying to nurse because the poor menz want to give bottles and telling us that we are selfish for making our own choice about our bodies and that we are insulting the amazing formula companies who gave so much just so we can have a choice of how to feed. It’s bs. And I’m ranting now, sorry, because I understand your choice and your contribution here. And I’m sorry things are so tough for you just now and you are stuck with such a hard choice. But ultimately it’s the fault of the parties not women voting differently. And I’m sorry these fucking politicians put you in that place.

bellinisurge · 12/12/2019 11:42

I'm assuming I will be ignored. But at least I can look at myself in the mirror.
