Transgender hate crime up by 81%

I thought someone else would have posted this as it's practically headline on BBC.

This is sad. Nobody should be being abused.

Cynical me thinks that there are a number of TRA's reporting anything and everything as hate crime. Misgendering, those saying women and lesbians are adult human females etc etc purposely to bump up the stats for the sympathy vote.....

R0wantrees · 27/06/2019 13:49

That would be Sue who is a high level "Equality" advisor at Channel 4, and used to be master of the local hunt, I think, before experiencing a second female puberty in their 50s

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 27/06/2019 13:34

I noticed that. It's good that individuals like Pascoe are getting real visibility in the media, it's important for the general public to learn who TW are.

Ereshkigal · 27/06/2019 13:34

Yet Sue was too scared to leave the house just a few hours ago. It's brilliant how Sue has overcome this so quickly. Truly a motivational and inspirational story for our times.

FreeFreesia · 27/06/2019 13:28

In our area they are running an interview with Sue Pascoe who has been categorised as a vulnerable person by the police and states is scared to leave the house. That would be Sue who just last month wanted us all to vote to send them to the European Parliament.
(Quoting myself)

Very interestingly Sue Pascoe interview has just made it on to main BBC lunchtime news...but it's a different edit. This morning was a lament, now it has a ballsy 'I'm here, deal with it' ending.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 27/06/2019 13:20

I wonder if the figures include people who have been “cis”ed. It’s also a form of misgendering. Is that being recorded?

What about all the forms that request a gender from people who have no gender? Forcing them to assign a gender to themselves in order to proceed with whatever they are applying/registering for?

Birdsfoottrefoil · 27/06/2019 13:16

Didn’t the cake case so you cannot force speech and it isn’t discrimination if someone doesn’t say what you want them to say?

Ereshkigal · 27/06/2019 13:16

The one incident they mention is horrible. It's such a manipulative article. They don't mention the nasty limericks and misgendering. Remember that Helen Islans action against Miranda was allegedly a "transphobic hate crime" as was Giuliana Kendal's against Venice Allan and Linda Bellos. So I imagine they're both in these stats.

Ereshkigal · 27/06/2019 13:13

Because I find a man identifying as a woman and insisting the rest of us address them as female just as offensive as an African American would find being told that some white bloke is black.

This, exactly.

PancakeAndKeith · 27/06/2019 12:57

The other problem is that most people will assume it’s things like being beaten up in the street or having poo pushed through their letter box. Things that no one should have to put up with.
Not saying that someone with a penis is a man.

DpWm · 27/06/2019 12:43

Janice Turner articles will probably account for a large number of "reported hate crimes".

AyeRobot · 27/06/2019 12:23

Glad to see other posters were able to write what I thought in a less angry way than I was feeling earlier.

I'm am still fizzing that the horrible story about the housing officer was the only actual example given, implying that the rest of the reports were of a similar nature.

And Sue Pascoe. Seriously?

Sunkisses · 27/06/2019 12:22

Can someone on twitter ask the BBC and/or Ben Hunte whether these were actual crimes (that resulted in a conviction). Or were they reported 'hate crime incidents' (and therefore could be utterly baseless and politically motivated)?

R0wantrees · 27/06/2019 11:22

West Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Police saw reporting of transgender hate crimes more than treble over three years.’

Cllr Sarah Fields & Dr Heather Brunskell Evans were reported for alleged hate crimes following their recent speeches in Leeds:

SD1978 · 27/06/2019 10:45

I'd prefer a breakdown. Given that tweets, comments and so much as a perceived unwelcoming look can be included as a 'hate' crime and not using overly woke language is a 'hate crime' I'd imagine most of these alleged 'crimes' are thinkspeak crimes. But hey. Why let that get in the way of an article designed to further the agenda.

ThePankhurstConnection · 27/06/2019 10:41

Rotherham is in South Yorkshire, not West.

Sorry, geography has never been my strong point - and me from the North of England too.

Let me correct that to Yorkshire police then.

Sunkisses · 27/06/2019 10:31

The trouble with all this 'hate crime' stuff is that - as Harry Miller of Fair Cop found out - that anyone can reported a 'hate crime', and even if it completely baseless, without any evidence, and motivated by a grudge or ideological differences, it still has to be recorded as a 'hate crime incident' - •even if there is no evidence for this, the 'victim' is batshit crazy, and no action is taken by the police.

So all the TA fruit loops around the country need to do is report every one they don't like, and - bingo - the 'hate crime' figures go up, and Ben Hunte from the BBC gets his 'trans people are so victimised' story.

And what a surprise that people report these hurty feelings hate crimes to the Yorkshire police. Mermaids and Susie Green are based there, and they have demonstrated they are her own private militia police force. Didn't Yorkshire police travel all the way down to Somerset to interview Posie Parker?

AnotherLass · 27/06/2019 10:30

"West Yorkshire Police's conduct over the last few years from Rotherham to their policing of people's 'thought process'."

Rotherham is in South Yorkshire, not West.

LangCleg · 27/06/2019 10:29

Nothing to do with trans or any other form of hate incident/crime, but here's an FOI asking about the reasons for NFA (no further action) on crimes reported to the police in Scotland:

www.copfs.gov.uk/foi/responses-we-have-made-to-foi-requests/42-responses2012/393-number-of-cases-marked-for-no-further-proceedings-for-no-further-action-in-specific-categories

You can see that quite a lot of crimes reported are either not actually crimes or so minor (in the minds of the police) it would be disproportionate to prosecute.

Popchyk · 27/06/2019 10:29

Susie Green will have reported rather a lot of those, I suspect.

Also Helen Islan, Mermaids staffer, who prosecuted Miranda Yardley, a transsexual, in court. Which was thrown out. That started as a hate incident in West Yorkshire.

Note that neither of the complainants identify as transgender. But they will be recorded as transgender hate incidents.

Mermaids also called the police after a teacher allegedly misgendered a pupil last year. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5429219/Charity-calls-police-teacher-misgenders-pupil.html

LangCleg · 27/06/2019 10:16

These aren't actual hate crimes.
They're just reports.
Not prosecutions, not convictions, not arrests, not charges.

Yes. Without a breakdown of police actions, we don't know much. How many were marked as No Crime? How many were marked as No Further Action for other reasons - eg further action disproportionate? Which crimes were they? What proportion were violent?

FWIW - I often think the same about statistics for women. If we all phoned up the police to report a crime when we ignored a wolf whistle and the response to ignoring was to be called frigid bitch or you need a good fucking or whatever, the police would do nothing else but spend all day writing them down. But it wouldn't tell you anything about how many women were raped.

ThePankhurstConnection · 27/06/2019 10:15

Meant to preview the post not post^^

To be clear I'm at a point where I am loathe to believe anything coming out of West Yorkshire police and that is largely to do with West Yorkshire Police's conduct over the last few years from Rotherham to their policing of people's 'thought process'.

ThePankhurstConnection · 27/06/2019 10:12

‘West Yorkshire Police and South Yorkshire Police saw reporting of transgender hate crimes more than treble over three years.’

Judging by what I have seen this year, the word 'reporting' is probably key here. There have probably been many 'crimes' -thoughts and repeating of facts- reported. I wonder how many were a) crimes b) about hate and c) actually processed as crimes rather than merely being reported.

Fuckthepainaway · 27/06/2019 10:07

The bbc have updated their article to include exact figures from each constabulary. Yorkshire police have had the biggest rise in reported trans hate incidents.

Is Yorkshire supposedly more transphobic then the rest of the uk?

@Transgender hate crimes recorded by police go up 81% www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-48756370
