Plans for "radical" trans health service model to be rolled out across England

A “radical” new model for trans health services – run by trans people and offering hormones, surgery referrals and non-medical support – is to be trialled in Greater Manchester. NHS England then plan to roll this model out across the country in order to meet the increasing demands from more and more people identifying as transgender. The service will initially deal with people currently on waiting lists but the plan is to then allow new GP referrals and, when fully operational, for people aged 17 and over to be able to self-refer themselves without going through a GP:

Missed this last month. WTAF! Did anyone go? Is there a follow up thread?

Why is the age not 18?

"NHS England Specialist Commissioning intends to procure an independent evaluation partner to formally evaluate the pilot." That should be an independent MEDICAL partner not a lobbying organisation masquerading as a charity.

"Clinical staff would be accredited in the assessment
and treatment of gender dysphoria via the Royal College of Physicians' credentialing programme (currently in development)". Wonder who is on that working group?

I’m not a doctor (so I can’t vouch for this) but this review covers various elevated risks when women’s bodies are exposed to testosterone- for example when transmen do this for identity reasons. Also looks at risks for transwomen.

I don’t really care what TRAs believe to be true.
I’d rather look at what evidence there is and have that explained without a political agenda behind it. And I think that’s what trans patients deserve too if they are going to take on these vastly invasive risky permanent life changing interventions. As well as a proper exploration of any underlying psychological or emotional issues by abundant, accessible, professional talking therapies.

Should have read: Can't wait..

DrG · 04/04/2019 10:56

I can wait to hear the 'results' of the trial.

20% children forcibly taken from loving homes by social services, and placed into (unregulated) trans foster care.
90% of teenage girls on the spectrum with their breast amputated.
100% of pre-pubescent children with Munchausen parents sterilized.

Woop! Lets see how that intersects with the electorate.

RedToothBrush · 04/04/2019 10:03

Identify as a trans woman to get hrt no questions asked.

Fazackerley · 04/04/2019 09:46

And yet if you are a menopausal woman, on your knees with mood swings, hot flushes, brain fog, itchy skin, vaginal atrophy you are told that you just need to lose a stone and take supplements. Can't possibly be given actual medicine to stop this purely physical problems. But presumably blokes walk in here and get hrt straight away.

Get to fuck.

BadPennyNoBiscuit · 04/04/2019 09:46

If women take testosterone in high doses for any length of time, does that mean they will need a hysterectomy later on?
Trans activists on Twitter are denying thats the case and claiming it is forced sterilisation, the same as has been faced by disabled people.

I wont post a link.

TirisfalPumpkin · 04/04/2019 09:42

I mean, I can see an argument for uncoupling transition healthcare from the NHS proper (which needs all the help it can get saving the lives of seriously ill people, not validating blue haired feelings) - although I can envisage some truly horrible outcomes for vulnerable people if there isn’t proper oversight.

ChattyLion · 04/04/2019 09:06

Do you think NHS England know and don’t care or NHS England have no idea who they are dealing with?

Either way there is space for women to have their say and get involved via NHS England’s various channels:

Greater Manchester is not only home to Action for Trans Health and the LGBT foundation which sends out binders but also Jess Bradley. Who is one of the founders of AfTH and has a number of Community Interest Companies registered. The type of orgs which often provide NHS services now.

NonHypotheticalLurkingParent · 02/04/2019 23:10

For goodness sake - The service will be based in a local community or primary care setting in Greater Manchester, and it will deliver, or arrange access to, the range of specialised interventions that are available from a conventional Gender Identity Clinic, including hormone treatments, counselling and referrals for surgery.

So of the three main interventions only counselling is the non-medicalised one. Surgeons are limited, so they are basically just transferring the waiting list to other areas. What exactly do they want for many people who don't want medical intervention? It strikes me that what's being put forward is the need for trans identifying counsellors to provide nothing but complete affirmation. That's not how counselling works.

I've said it many times - the NHS is on it's knees. We've been waiting for nearly 5 years for an ASD diagnosis. 3 years being fobbed off because CAMHS didn't think it was necessary. 2 years waiting for an assessment. The local CAMHS website says that everyone has a case worker for continuity of care - in reality each case worker has more than 5X as many as they should and so have no idea who their patients are. The local website also lists many treatments they provide - in reality they offer CBT delivered by 1 mental health nurse, if you don't get on with them (quite critical in mental health) there are no others and the treatment has to stop. If treatment stops then CAMHS signs you off. Adult services are just as bad.

It feels to me they are living in an idealistic fairy tale land, where everyone gets the treatment they both need and want to live happily ever after.

It upsets me so much that I can barely formulate a rational rant about this pilot.

GeordieGenes · 02/04/2019 22:26

If a woman is anyone who says they're a woman, and a man is anyone who says they're a man, and non-binary people are valid as they are... then why the need for medical services and drugs?!!

littlbrowndog · 02/04/2019 22:16

Nhs needs funding. Hey this won’t go far when boards doing there budgeting

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASavings · 02/04/2019 22:11

My comment was to RepealTheGRA btw

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASavings · 02/04/2019 22:10

I agree with it too, I think that's exactly what we should be telling people. Your body is fine, your perfect as you are, it's society that's wrong. Here's some support to help you cope with reality and feel confident expressing yourself however you please. Which is why it's so ironic that instead we've now gone into a tail spin of hyper medicalised self diagnosis! Because talking therapy is conversion therapy obvs. Unlike telling lesbians they're actually straight men and sterilising them which is... oh wait

SirVixofVixHall · 02/04/2019 22:09

“The local non binary population “ er...as EVERYONE IS NON BLOODY BINARY that will be an awful lot of service users eh ?
There is clearly a lot of money in this.

RepealTheGRA · 02/04/2019 21:59

The idea was to send the message that there was nothing wrong with the individual, and that it was societies attitude that was causing the problem

Tbf I agree with that. Doesn’t mean that people in distress shouldn’t be helped though - with therapy, not off label drugs!

AnyOldPrion · 02/04/2019 21:49

”OMFG! Are they completely deluded?”

Yes.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASavings · 02/04/2019 21:48

Dinneratbreadsticks

On the video I just post here the paediatrician talking about 25 minutes in says that GID was originally declared to not be a mental disorder in an attempt to demedicalise it by reinforcing that it was socially induced not innate. The idea was to send the message that there was nothing wrong with the individual, and that it was societies attitude that was causing the problem. I haven't been able to find any additional sources yet to back that up but oh the irony if it's true.

EweSurname · 02/04/2019 21:29

Wtf! This is shocking - how is this ok?

Especially bearing in mind this was published yesterday

RepealTheGRA · 02/04/2019 21:26

Does this mean we can look forward to the immediate release of all trans prisoners

Well we’re already not joining them so it’s the next logical step.

www.thesun.co.uk/news/8752617/transgender-thug-spared-jail-bottle-attack-uncomfortable-womens-prison/amp/

all trans surgery carried out by trans people

We don’t seem to give a crap about safeguards when it comes to trans people, especially children, so why not? Now that, THAT is transphobia that the powers that be do not give a crap about 17 year old CHILDREN’s safety the minute they say they’re trans. Sad

Thingybob · 02/04/2019 21:25

From the pdf, "Many people accessing the service do not always require medical intervention"

I don't get it, what do trans people want from this service?

OvaHere · 02/04/2019 21:19

Has the ATH’s batshit manifesto actually been put into practice?

Does this mean we can look forward to the immediate release of all trans prisoners and all trans surgery carried out by trans people?
