Scottish sex offender prison official - Sunday Times story

scepticalwoman · 02/12/2018 02:10

According to Andrew Gilligan, a senior Scottish prison official convicted of possessing 22,000 indecent images of children and now on the sex offenders' register was one of those responsible for introducing its “gender identity and gender reassignment policy” which places men in women's prisons according to their self identification.

Deepest apologies Andrew! Was thinking too much about being tactful enough not to get deleted in making a point.

littlbrowndog · 02/12/2018 17:56

But maybe on hols this weekend

littlbrowndog · 02/12/2018 17:55

We need Rowan she is a fount of knowledge

feelingverylazytoday · 02/12/2018 17:54

Knicknack Mr Gilligan is the journalist who has uncovered this story, not the offender. The sex offender's name is Gordon Pike. Andrew Gilligan has really done a lot of good work on this subject, and holds his own on twitter.

Knicknackpaddyflak · 02/12/2018 17:51

Hmm.

So we have Mr Challoner, Ms Bradley and now Mr Gilligan. All in public posts with public responsibilities, all of whom who have influenced and guided policy that reduces safeguarding and protections for women.

The question has to arise, how many more are there not yet come to light? And to what extent do the personal agendas of these people mean those policies need to be immediately and very closely examined with a critical eye to personal agendas having influenced them?

Journalists? Politicians? Anybody?

Kat : Sometimes DD2 says I go on about this stuff too much.

Same here! My dd is 13 and thinks it's all a ridiculous obsession of mine and things like men in womens prisons isnt actually happening. I suppose I should be grateful none of my DC are buying into the trend.

Hopefully our DDs will be thanking us one day!

VickyEadie · 02/12/2018 16:15

But, in the bowels of Christ (to appropriate a phrase), is this amongst the most rebarbative, egregious assaults on women that we've ever seen? To affect to believe that we're living through a social phenomenon in which women are suddenly committing sexual offences?

Indeed. It's just one of the issues coming out of this whole 'let's pretend something is true when we know it isn't' nonsense that annoys the shite out of me.

arranbubonicplague · 02/12/2018 16:09

the number of women in prison for sex offences has risen by 40% in three years

So - will a presiding government be launching a commission or inquiry into why there's been such an unprecedented increase? Maybe presided over by Helena Kennedy?

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3395192-Review-of-Helena-Kennedys-Eve-Was-Shamed

Or - will the lack of any such drive for an investigation have to be accepted as tacit acknowledgement that we know the statistics are now meaningless?

We have government-sanctioned attacks on women expressed through austerity policies and Universal Credit that disproportionately affect women and children. And there's the intersection of austerity and the Children's Act that has women terrified that Social Services will remove children from a household with domestic violence tho' there are insufficient resources to allow women to flee such circumstances.

But, in the bowels of Christ (to appropriate a phrase), is this amongst the most rebarbative, egregious assaults on women that we've ever seen? To affect to believe that we're living through a social phenomenon in which women are suddenly committing sexual offences?

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 02/12/2018 14:20

Really good and clear summary of the issue by Andrew.

We always said that a small number of transwomen committing male-pattern behaviour would have a significant impact on the statistics of female crime. And lo.

sackrifice · 02/12/2018 13:18

Almost like a ring of sex offenders

Careful now, people have been exited from this forum for mentioning this.

hackmum · 02/12/2018 13:17

Thanks, Arran - I think you're right, and they're using the cloak of respectability of an organisation like Stonewall to pursue a criminal agenda. Why Ruth Hunt is allowing this to happen is anyone's guess.

ErrolTheDragon · 02/12/2018 13:16

There are now 3 links to the petition in the comments.

arranbubonicplague · 02/12/2018 13:09

Or is he part of a co-ordinated attempt by male sexual abusers to provide each other with access to victims?

It feels awfully like some previously-deprecated organisations managed to go underground and re-group and come out with a very different PR strategy than the one that had them splashed in Sunday newspapers last time around (albeit they were successful infiltrating the Home Office to act as a vault for their more egregious organisation membership lists and document as well as being a channel for public funding).

Badstyley · 02/12/2018 13:06

I see you, and I will never forget.

And pusillanimous, had to consult my dictionary. Lol, dictionaries are such useful things.

hackmum · 02/12/2018 13:04

It's good to see the comments on the Times piece. It gives me hope that sanity will prevail.

The huge question coming out of this, for me, anyway, is: was Pike acting alone? Or is he part of a co-ordinated attempt by male sexual abusers to provide each other with access to victims?

HawkeyeInConfusion · 02/12/2018 12:50

Agree.

I see you. And I will never forget.

And that also goes for organisations such as Girl Guides, YHA, British Gymnastics, NSPCC, etc.

arranbubonicplague · 02/12/2018 11:12

Yet again - in general, I think it would be so helpful to have an @MNHQ web chat about criminal justice reform.

There was a fabulous group of people recently who were involved in a Shadow Report on VAWG and also prisons - they attended an event in the House of Lords.

“FiLiA are delighted to be involved in bringing this group together to gather information & evidence to inform the shadow report.” Sally Jackson Blackbox666 at House of Lords to work on shadow report on UK obligations re #VAWG with GoonerProf CathElliott RichardJGarside

If there could be input from Frances Crook and others I feel we could learn a lot about what a root and branch reform of the system would look like and what it would cost. It feels like we would have the opportunity to learn so much and it would inform the debate.

Katvonblackdeath · 02/12/2018 11:10

Sometimes DD2 says I go on about this stuff too much.

And most of the time I don't think I go on about it half as much as I should.

We see you
We will not forget

PositivelyPERF · 02/12/2018 11:08

I see you too whispers thats a mirror

LangCleg · 02/12/2018 11:07

I would contribute to a new Posie campaign!

Women see you. We will never forget.

WSPU · 02/12/2018 11:05

I see you too.

happydappy2 · 02/12/2018 11:01

Remember when David Davies asked to raise an urgent question at PMQ about male people being put in womens prisons and John Bercow said no..... I emailed my MP about a month ago asking her to raise an urgent question about the prison situation-no response.

Our MPs are failing women prisoners-we can all see it-yet have no power to change things.

Urbanbeetler · 02/12/2018 10:55

Why is the tax payer footing a £60000 bill for the trans person mentioned in that article to have gender reassignment in a private hospital? The bill included escorts and travel from prison in Scotland to Sussex. Surely there are other priorities with regards to funding. That’s the equivalent to my tax for 6 years.
