We've been lied to about 'Single SEX' wards since 2010.

They were ALWAYS based upon 'gender'.
The evidence is in NHS documents from 2010.
And the Department of Health were told, by the NHS team, not to tell people wards were segregated by sex, because they knew the policy was based on gender.

But the DOH purposefully used the word sex to the public instead.

We've been deliberately misled.

I'm bumping this thread in gratitude to @Barracker and Anne Harper-Wright for sounding the alarm in October 2018.

It appears that increasing numbers of politicians, journalists, celebrities etc are becoming aware of the very serious systemic Safeguarding failures within the NHS. I think it important to recognise the women who have contributed to the research for no personal gain and have been whistle-blowing for many years.

New 'single sex ward' policy issued this month doesn't appear to vary much from the 2009 version discussed on this thread back in 2018. If anyone spots any substantive difference shout out.

The original policy is linked in the October 2018 medium article in the OP.

Nothing will change though.

RedemptiveCrocodile · 14/01/2019 14:29

How often does that need to happen, Redemptive? For every appointment a trans patient has? For every procedure?

I don't know - depends on the computer system. Does each Trust use their own systems, or do they share IT? It's a terrible waste of time and resources, at the very least.

R0wantrees · 14/01/2019 14:24

lots of replies to their tweet on this confirming that transwomen have been using women's wards for many years

And any incidents would not easily be established as males identifying as women in single-sex accomodation would have their 'sex' recorded as 'female' on NHS records.

Whilst female patients who have had their safety, dignity and privacy compromised by a male would be less likely to have reported or complained about this.

Cf the reponse to a woman who complained, January 2018

"A Lancaster mum whose bi-polar disorder left her believing men were conspiring to kill her said she was left terrified when she was locked on a women’s psychiatric ward with an “extremely male-bodied” transgender patient.

Philippa Molloy, 42, said she was “genuinely, absolutely terrified” because she had suffered a relapse in her condition that made her irrationally terrified of men – including her own husband. Philippa Molloy.

When she raised her concerns with hospital staff, however, she said she was not taken seriously and her medical notes implied that she was a “transphobic bigot”.

She said the NHS had failed to think through the implications of allowing patients to self-identify their gender."

They keep saying this, but given that until very recently (when the Stonewall umbrella grew the numbers) the actual number of TW was tiny, it is only likely to have happened very, very rarely.

According to Juno Dawson (remember them?), there is nothing to see here, nothing to be concerned about. And lots of replies to their tweet on this confirming that transwomen have been using women's wards for many years

That's shocking redemptive. It's such a mess.

Mixed sex wards are something that unite the sexes as most people hate them - men and women. That''s why eradicating them has been a major target for years.

RedemptiveCrocodile · 13/01/2019 14:21

Something I just saw on Twitter:

In my NHS job it causes problems. I input data by sex. The systems we use now show gender only. When we input male data the system refuses it is the gender is female. For trans patients we have to contact Data Quality and change the gender to male. When we are done we have to Call data Quality again and change it all back. Sadly clinical medicine has to go by biology rather than feelings.

R0wantrees · 13/01/2019 10:21

Is it true that you said calling it SEX despite it actually being self-declared GENDER would "ensure a better public understanding"?

I was just thinking that if this statement were made by a Trans Rights' actvist in other contexts, it would be seen as part of the 'neccessary re-education'.

Context of course matters.
Hmm

ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 13/01/2019 10:09

Why do politicians and policy makers think that the public don't or can't understand? Why do they feel they have to lie to us?

R0wantrees · 13/01/2019 10:03

What could have possibly influenced Andrew Lansley to change the wording? Did he feel compelled because it suited him or someone else? Many others? How come he is selling women and children down the river for a tiny fraction of the population?

I have a memory that there was also possibly discussion about him re GRA on a FWR thread.

Bienchen · 13/01/2019 09:46

Thanks for the link R0wantrees.

What could have possibly influenced Andrew Lansley to change the wording? Did he feel compelled because it suited him or someone else? Many others? How come he is selling women and children down the river for a tiny fraction of the population? Or is there a larger chunk of the population coming out of the woodwork now that will "benefit" in the politest sense from these changes to wording at the expenses of natal women and girls? Who is pulling the strings here in the background?

BlackeyedGruesome · 13/01/2019 09:31

This is very distressing.

Thank you for bringing it to the public's attention.

R0wantrees · 13/01/2019 01:55

Words fail me, who is behind all this?

There are serious questions to ask of Andrew Lansley, see:

ChewyLouie · 12/01/2019 19:24

The government needs to sort out this mess: mixed biological sex wards should be replaced with mixed gender wards with non binary or trans people in a side room based on their biological sex. This offers this group of patients privacy and dignity - surely knowing you are threatening to other women on a female ward will be traumatising for gentle trans folk.

*Many women have short hair, wear trousers and plain t shirts, no make up, flats. Many many older and elderly women rock this look. Are women dressed like this who are unconscious out in a male ward? I'm willing to bet not. This is all about and only about men's rights."

This ^^ As one of said elderly women I'm absolutely sure you're right. It's about the constant validation demanded by such as Tara Hewitt, who couldn't look or sound more masculine if dressed in a three-piece suit, yet expects to be treated at all times as a woman. TRA's couldn't care less about anyone's rights or wellbeing other than their own.

nevermorelenore · 03/01/2019 14:29

Maternity wards and the women’s hospital (which specifically deals with female body issues) are the only hospital spaces that are segregated.

I recently gave birth and men were allowed to sleep on the wards with their partners overnight. I get that their partners needed extra support, but it was horrible to sleep in a room with snoring men, trying to change and breastfeed with just a curtain for privacy. One of them was extremely verbally abusive to his partner who’d just had a difficult birth. Horrible to hear. If he’d been sent home at least she’d get some respite.

I can’t inagine how bad it would be for elderly, disabled, or women more vulnerable than me to be sharing with men. It’s shocking.
