It is fascinating to watch this leaking into "normal" Twitter.

David Aaronovich was an early responder and Anne Applebaum is there too.

The first Butler reference was on page 2. Page 2 FFS. I have never read such patronising nonsense in my life. It's the academic equivalent of when you go to an art gallery and look at a painting and think "a five year old could do better than that". The countryside isn't "essentialised" as different from urban places, it is empirically different, one can measure things like trees per square km, different animal species per square km, percentage of paved surface per square km. But no, paint people's valid concerns about material changes to their local environment as "essentialisation" of "social constructs" of "natural" and "urban" so you can figure out how to coerce compliance through "de-essentialisation" rhetoric.

If you can get access to the full article (your local library might have access), read it, it's a disturbing insight into how "social construct" arguments can be used to shift the goalposts for any argument.

Has anyone commented on the irony of people glibly talking about 're-education' who somehow seem to have managed to miss out on important chunks of education?

It is fascinating to watch this leaking into "normal" Twitter. There's virtually no shared follows between my everyday-linked-to-work account and my undercover-radfem-following account, but it's definitely starting to cross over. Other academics from far and wide are pointing and laughing at Goldsmiths. Actually looking at "latest tweets" for the word gulag is revealing, too - lots of people pissed off at the appropriation. I expect History Twitter to be busy in the morning!

Being an old bat, I remember when re-education camps were run by Mao, Pol Pot and the USSR
Equating re-education with boring spa days demeans those who suffered the torture of the original far left "re-education" camps.

What worries me about Goldsmiths & the TRA gang is what their alumni would do if they ever genuinely came to power later, in government

OK, "de-essentialise" appears to be a term of art in social science research. I keep saying that social sciences aren't real science and shit like this keeps proving me right.
