Actually women are permitted to attend two Lodges. So wonder why TW don't want to go there? Or maybe they will demand it
Yes. Whilst UGLE, following the example of medieval stonemasons, is, and has always been, restricted to men, women Freemasons have two separate Grand Lodges, which are restricted to women.

For more information, please contact the Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Freemasons [HFAF] and the Order of Women Freemasons [OWF].

Are there women freemasons?

spend your energy trying to get trans women disallowed if you really can’t see the bigger picture here.

No the bigger picture is that the ONLY people who can’t join are actual women.

Oh and the tiny, tiny slightly worrying fact that this person is lobbying to remove any woman only spaces in the entire city of London, including public loos and Hampstead ponds.

So says they are non binary, but no, you nasty ladies can’t join my den, and byvthe way you can’t have any safe spaces either.

If you can’t see that’s worrying, especially in the light of how this week another high profile campaigner for removing women’s safe spaces has been allegedly caught flashing and with a blog full of rape and invest and dick pics (allegedly) then I suggest it’s you who cannot see thevbig picture.

The big picture is a concerted drive to remove all women’s rights and safe spaces. And remove child safeguarding principles.

it's a male only club, which is why TW are allowed entry

Honestly, the cognitive dissonance is outstanding. Surely that's some sort of a transphobic policy, because we're all meant to go along with TWAW. In theory it would be "outing" in the extreme to be a TW in the Freemasons under this policy too - everyone would know why they're the only person in a skirt there.

Thanks Canine - looking forward to reading comments on this later.

The Times understands that a senior judge, who is a Freemason, was asked to look into the legal implications of gender reassignment before a possible relaxation of the law. As a single-sex association, lodges are exempt from sexual discrimination legislation on admissions criteria but discrimination against members is a different issue.

Under the Gender Recognition Act 2004 and the Equality Act 2010 a man who has joined the Freemasons cannot be excluded after becoming a woman because gender reassignment is a protected characteristic.

Here's a share token for the Times article www.thetimes.co.uk/article/freemasons-to-admit-women-if-they-first-joined-as-men-n6mrqm6zl?shareToken=10392bb4573703ea4a72e9bbe496ee52

Open to all, unless you're a woman who doesn't claim to be a man.

Hideandgo · 01/08/2018 08:34

Transgender women are real women and have now been permitted to the Masons. No reason why all women shouldn’t be permitted.

R0wantrees · 01/08/2018 08:33

I think you’re missing the point. The issue is that women are not permitted, that is what we should be fighting about. But spend your energy trying to get trans women disallowed if you really can’t see the bigger picture here.

There is a bigger picture yes, a much bigger one involving:

power / abuse of power
free speech
political process
safeguarding & child protection
women's rights

womanspeaking · 01/08/2018 08:28

Stamps foot - but if TWAW then they shouldn't be eligible. Cake and eating it over and over and over again.

Not that I care - the freemasons have a very toxic reputation.

SweetGrapes · 01/08/2018 08:26

The trans policy is all mental acrobatics and doesn't surprise me. The bit that did surprise me was this - Currently, the Freemasons’s single-sex admissions policy is exempt from sex discrimination legislation

Seems there are a lot of exceptions to the laws and they all benefit one group of biology specimens. I didn't know this. So refuges and birth centres etc where wlmen are vulnerable are not specifically excluded in law but places where men have power, money and prstige as well as play silly games are all protected.

The bigger picture here is that a man who believes that transwomen should have access to all women’s spaces within the city of London, because TWAW, is quite happy to be a high up member of the Freemasons - an institution which quite clearly bases its membership rules on the fact that TWAnotW

SayNoToCarrots · 01/08/2018 08:25

I don't think they are happily accepting transgender people, just attempting to comply with the law.

womanspeaking · 01/08/2018 08:25

Hideandgo
The issue is that apparently Transgender women are 'real ' women - in which case as 'real women' are not eligible to be a Freemason then how can a transgender woman (as they are a 'real' woman' ) be a mason?
It's a very tangled web and this is a perfect example of the double think, inconsistency and lying used with this subject

UrsulaPandress · 01/08/2018 08:25

Hell I don't want to join the Freemasons under any circumstances.

R0wantrees · 01/08/2018 08:24

article does say women who have become men may join, but it appears to say that this only applies after surgery

Apparent interesting focus of female genitals & surgery as a requirement.

from Daily Mail:
In its new policy document, the policy also asks brethren to treat anyone going through gender reassignment with the ‘utmost compassion’ and support.

It reads: ‘It is important that any situation involving gender reassignment of a Freemason is treated with the utmost compassion and sensitivity and that the individual is supported throughout the process.

‘No candidate should be subjected to questions about their gender which could make them feel uncomfortable.’

But transmen would apparently have to answer questions (& provide the 'correct' answers) about their surgery. Hmm

Some may of course be very happy to have this as a matter of public record. Some transmen (not very many though) have been very open and public in pushing forward trans rights and been at the heart of changes to law and policies.

Anyway, what do the Freemasons say about people who are non-binary? I have a feeling there could be some tension with Masonic traditions etc

Hideandgo · 01/08/2018 08:22

Actually I see it as an opportunity for fight for all women to be permitted. Why not use the situation to the advantage of women rather than automatically go into a defend and retreat position just because there are trans people involved.

Indierockandroll · 01/08/2018 08:20

Biology I believe the initiation ritual includes breast baring to prove a manly physique. Maybe they'll extend it?

I know this because one of my friends once found her dad's rule book and we had a giggle. She was very concerned that she'd be buried up to her head in sand and they'd wait for the tide to come in. Still, we got to try on his lovely pinny, so it was a risk we were willing to let her take.

talk about a tangled web

Indierockandroll · 01/08/2018 08:06

He also blocked me on Twitter for being a woman. I'd had no interaction with him, yet was blocked.
Seems biology does matter.

I'm head scratching now because he's clearly been doing PR to justify his own cross dressing existenceand claim that TWAW (while being a prominent member of the Masons) yet surely this does indeed show tw are not women...
