Open letter to advertisers on mumsnet

To all who advertise on here

I am a female, born as such and with the chromosomes that identify me as female.

I am horrified that mumsnet has caved in to a vocal minority and has effectively banned free speech that is factually correct. I accept people should not be abusive to one another but to insist that correct terms used in constructive and educational debate should not be used is an attack on freedom of speech.

As mumsnet have caved in to this abusive minority - a minority who often try to use intimidation to prevent women from gathering to discuss issues that affect women, I will have to reconsider my presence on mumsnet. Should I choose to withdraw from visiting the site you will have lost a potential consumer and will certainly have lost an audience member. I am also going to go one step further should I withdraw (or be banned) from mumsnet - I will make a list of all advertisers and will actively boycott your products and encourage all I know to do the same.

Oppression of females must not be tolerated. We must be allowed to speak freely, to feel safe, to have safe spaces, to be free from violence both verbal and physical, to have equality, to be allowed our identity, to be listened to. In short, we must not be oppressed.

There are women who support those who are trying to erode women's freedom of speech and identity - this does not make them right. Women opposed women getting the vote and equality. The majority of women who did want the right to vote and equality eventually made enough noise that they were listened to. At the moment a vocal minority have mumsnet and others in their thrall. The majority of which I am a part are starting to wake up. I urge you to not give in to a minority intent on distorting truths and subjugating women.

Engage - not engaged. Sentiment remains the same, though!

TerfsUp · 15/06/2018 07:14

I agree, OP. To your comment I would add "Don't get in the mud with the pig; you'll only get dirty and the pig will enjoy it."

It never fails to dismay me MNers engaged with the usual shit-stirrers. Ignore them.

Ucantarguewistupid · 14/06/2018 22:06

Glad to see I'm not the only one feeling this way. Thanks for the links and lists of advertisers to avoid.

For those intent on trying to bully etc - read my user name. It will explain why I will not engage with you (other than this heads up to let you know why.....). Twist words, meanings and accuse all you like. This thread is not for you, it's not even about you. It's for advertisers and it's about the attempted oppression and erosion of women, it's not a debate about whether people who have changed gender identity feel scared about women refusing to accept that sex can be changed. It's not even about pointing out that groups of women have not turned up to meetings held by people who have changed gender identity and intimidated them and prevented them from entering their meeting - because actions like that would justify an article expressing fear.......

I strongly urge others not to enter circular arguments but instead continue to explain to advertisers why you will boycott them.

I use Moonpig for all cards but have already opened an account with funky Pigeon. I will use them from now on. I will not support MN.

TerfsUp · 14/06/2018 21:21

Adding Moonpig to the list.

Hear hear.

If anyone has a list of companies that have threatened to withdraw their advertising, please share it with me so that I can write to the companies to complain and to ensure that I never do business with them.

JoanSummers · 14/06/2018 21:14

I don't have a big income but I do make a very large proportion (most) of the spending decisions in my household. I'm in.

BlooperReel · 14/06/2018 21:04

Totally agree

tryingtodateagain · 14/06/2018 20:37

Hear hear here too!

Dear Advertisers

I do close to 100% of my family's purchasing decisions - this goes from groceries, clothes, furnishings to holidays, insurance and household repairs. I spend a lot of time on Mumsnet because it is free high-quality woman centred conversation with a culture I value. This is under threat.

Mumsnet's content is user generated.

That means that we users write the words that people flock to see and you advertisers get to place your products next to.

Mumsnet must maintain a vibrant forum and keep interesting content generated so that users and lurkers will keep coming and keep seeing the adverts you place.

This is under threat.

Us users are being dictated to and told to tell lies because Mumsnet have capitulated to a group of controlling hate-fuelled bullies.

Will you still want to advertise if no one sticks around?

It's classic abusive behaviour, isn't it? All about controlling women. And being colluded with by the people who should be telling them to bog off and get a life.

spontaneousgiventime · 14/06/2018 20:19

Mumsnet swears by

spontaneousgiventime · 14/06/2018 20:15

Some on here

QueenOfIce · 14/06/2018 20:14

Yes! I'd also like a list of who to boycott.

Pluckedpencil · 14/06/2018 20:13

Can I have a list of who to boycott?

Juells · 14/06/2018 20:13

Why don't fucking men fuck off and post on their own fucking boards about how horrible women are, and leave us the fuck alone.

Battleax · 14/06/2018 20:13

I shop not just for me, but my four children. We, as women, have a lot of purchasing power.

YY.

Fucker! I buy every single card I send from Moonpig. Oh well, bye bye Moonpig, hello somewhere else.

Try Funky Pigeon or Thortful
