There was talk on this transgender thread about starting a list of references.

Hope no-one minds me starting one. Please feel free to add to it!

I'm still looking for a good link to dispute the pink/blue brain nonsense. Maybe @M0stlyBowlingHedgehog can add one with references to d values of 0.5.

I'll start with Gender Identity (Protected Characteristic) Bill 2016-17

Guess who just hit #peaktrans again having read Stopmakingsense last post!

BTW do you think we should mention to these MTT that many women (yes myself included) actually do not experience vaginal o***m but instead it is based elsewhere within that region? Grin

NUS Fair representation now requires 50% of delegates to be "self-defining women": from their guidance:

Identifying women candidates

To conduct a fair representation election, you need to identify women candidates in the election at the outset. It is very important that you ask candidates to define their own gender identity at the point of nomination. NUS believes that self-definition of gender is the only way someone’s gender identity should be labelled. You should never ‘work out’ who is a woman based on people’s names or their physical appearance. For example, someone’s self-identified gender may not correlate with society’s presentations of gender.

I realise these folks are in their own little ivory tower, but there now could very easily be NO women - i.e. adult human females - being NUS delegates. Funnily enough, no need to ensure that at least 50% of delegates are self-identifying men - wonder why that is?

Except full genital surgery will become more difficult in mtf in the future. if boys are puberty blocked then their penis will not develop beyond that of a child, As its the inverted penis which is used to form a Neovagina, then there isnt going to be much to work with. Means they will either have to use tissue grafts, causing scarring at the donor site, or they will use a piece of colon with all the risks that entails.

CaroleService · 23/03/2017 06:51

I'm guessing they can do it better nowadays.

Datun · 22/03/2017 00:41

We have been informed that, although John Hopkins Medical School stopped carrying out genitoplasty under Prof McHugh’s direction in the 1970s, it has since reversed this policy and is now ‘fully committed to providing gender-affirming surgery’. An official statement issued in 2016 confirmed that the decision to resume this surgery was taken as the result of ‘careful consideration over the past year of best practices and the appropriate provision of care for transgender individuals’. We are happy to set the record straight.

Wtf? They've reversed their policy??

An article from yesterday - the italicised amendment was in response to a complaint but the main text was not contested by complainant: www.scotsman.com/news/opinion/dare-to-debate-this-damaging-idea-that-gender-is-a-social-construct-1-4342596

Summary of existing legislation and some effects of potential changes to it, commissioned from a barrister in relation to the proposed Gender Identity Bill.

Was posted on another thread and is helpful (if depressing).

Great blog, beachcomber. Thanks for the link. I will read it some more when I'm not so sleepy that I keep nodding off!

I can't help but feel the fashion industry are making a good start at helping to dismantle stereotypes.

Thanks for these last ones.

Underlying all this is the area of free speech.

My feelings are that until that is revisited and reinstated by all (young people in particular) this will not be resolved.

Excellent blog with analysis of key concepts.

Not sure if this is the right thread for the above link. I was just thinking of those supporting the poster who is currently being put through similar.
The comments are interesting - some further reading there.

Some resources for anyone concerned about the effect of the trans agenda on children:

www.transgendertrend.com

A site set up by a group of parents concerned about the current trend to diagnose ‘gender non-conforming’ children as transgender.

4thwavenow.com

This site was started by the mother of a teenage girl who suddenly decided she was a 'trans man'. The site's author says : " I created this site because mine is a viewpoint that is seldom publicly heard: that of a left-leaning parent who is critical of the dominant paradigm regarding transgender politics and treatment."

youthtranscriticalprofessionals.org

From the site: "There are two principal authors of this site. One is a clinical social worker, the other is a university professor. We are left-leaning, open-minded, and pro-gay rights. However, we are concerned about the current trend to quickly diagnose and affirm young people as transgender, often setting them down a path toward medical transition."

Good article on brains

Regarding the autism links, as a teacher of children with autism, I have seen exactly what's described among more socially able and socially aware pupils. One pupil received support around a desire to be female and later decided he was gay and enjoys fashion.

Also had the opposite scenario where a boy point blank refused to read Cinderella (reading book) as it was 'for girls.' I've never had mainstream children do this, even if they thought it.

That is appalling Angry. Should we email Childline with links to some science and ask for their source that "gender" is decided at birth?

NB, I think the ACPeds is not what it seems (has been brought up on other threads).

RoquefortMonster · 14/03/2017 23:02

Childline information on transgender looks as though it's come straight out of the transactivists' handbook:

www.childline.org.uk/info-advice/your-feelings/sexual-identity/transgender-identity/

It starts 'When we're born, people decide our gender for us. This means they decide whether we're a boy or a girl.'

Just looking at the paperwork and legislation ahead of writing to my MP about Maria Miller's bill:

Women and Equality Committee’s report on Transgender Equality, 14 Jan 2016
www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201516/cmselect/cmwomeq/390/390.pdf
This report recommends changing the Gender Recognition Act 2004 in line with the principles of gender self-declaration and replacing confusing and inadequate language regarding trans people in the Equality Act 2010 by creating a new protected characteristic of gender identity.

Current legislation:
The Gender Recognition Act 2004 states applicants for a Gender Recognition Certificate are required to prove that they:

  • are 18 years old or more;
  • have, or have had, a documented mental-health diagnosis of gender dysphoria (by producing a statement by a doctor - usually a psychiatrist or sexual-health specialist - or a psychologist on the GRP’s list of experts.);
  • are not married (unless their spouse has given consent to changing the marriage from different-sex to same-sex or vice versa, as appropriate);
  • are not in a civil partnership;
  • have lived fully for the last two years in their acquired gender (by producing a selection of items of documentary evidence showing change of name and gender, such as a passport, rent book, wages slip or benefits documentation); and
  • intend to live permanently in their acquired gender until death.
www.gov.uk/apply-gender-recognition-certificate/overview

The Equality Act 2010 states “A person has the protected characteristic of gender reassignment if the person is proposing to undergo, is undergoing or has undergone a process (or part of a process) for the purpose of reassigning the person's sex by changing physiological or other attributes of sex.”

www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/535764/Government_Response_to_the_Women_and_Equalities_Committee_Report_on_Transgender_Equality.pdf
Generally said that the current terminology is adequate. Made reference to a guide for providing services for transgender customers
www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/484857/Providing_services_for_transgender_customers-a_guide.pdf
which says “Good Practice 4: Assume everyone selects the facilities appropriate to their gender. A trans person should be free to select the facilities (such as toilets or changing rooms) appropriate to the gender in which they present.”

House of Commons Debate, 01 Dec 2016
hansard.parliament.uk/commons/2016-12-01/debates/D4F283FB-2C02-4C8C-8C7E-BEAB889D1425/TransgenderEquality
Caroline Flint (Don Valley) (Lab) said “I welcome the debate, because it is vital for us to consider the issue of transgender rights, but should we not also be wary of creating gender-neutral environments that may prove more of a risk to women themselves? A recent case involving my old university, the University of East Anglia, which has gender-neutral toilets, revealed that a man had been using those facilities to harass women. He was charged and convicted. How does the right hon. Lady think we can protect women from male violence in gender-neutral environments?”

Interesting that the autism link suggested kids grow out of it by puberty.

Which really means it's the parents pushing gender stereotypes on them then doesn't it?

We are all on the spectrum in our family. I was 'boyish' in many ways & suffered from having a gender neutral childhood bc anything 'girlie' was seen as less than in our house.

My children all play with everything & anything, typical pink/blue & lots of gender neutral toys/books. One clings v strongly to pink etc, it gives her comfort, she likes the ridged definitions she finds on TV & through other kids at school. But she's also loud and impulsive and bolshy and it's reassuring to think that in time that all may blend rather than the idea she maybe more vulnerable to being pushed to be quieter & more compliant.

My are much less interested in stereotypes but they are less sociable than dd1.
