Welcome to the second thread of the Les Miserables Read-a-long.

I've taken over from AgualusasL0ver in trying to keep us all reading together, but have copied the below over from the first thread.

I'll also be using the Christine Donougher translation (on Kindle) for posting in the main, but it doesn't matter which translation you have, they seem to follow the same breakdown.
It's a bit sprawly in places, some people have entire sections in the appendices, so I've started adding the first line of the chapter to try and lock in exactly where we are for that day, hopefully it helps us all keep together!

The only rules
The plan is to read ONE chapter a day and contribute/follow the thread as you see fit. There are c. 365 chapters, so we plan to take the year to read slowly and really get under the skin. Sometimes we have clustered chapters in past read-a-longs, and people do sometimes read ahead. All fine - but No spoilers until the relevant day.
Notes from previous read-a-longs

  • How you manage one a day is entirely up to you, some people prefer to store them and read all the chapters for the week at once, some read each day.
  • Sometimes these books can go off on a tangent all their own (looking at Mr Tolstoy), stick with it :-)
  • All formats and translations welcome. Sometimes the translation discussions are some of the most interesting conversations.
  • You WILL get behind at some point, but don't worry, just catch up when you can.
  • Tangents, things you discovered down a rabbit hole, articles, pod casts, clips of epic scenes when we get to them all very welcome on the thread.
Spoiler free summary , courtesy of Chat GPT below. Schmoop has book summaries so I will post those at the relevant points. ** Les Misérables is a classic novel by Victor Hugo that explores justice, compassion, and the struggle for dignity in 19th-century France. At its core, the book follows the lives of several interconnected characters from different social classes as they navigate poverty, law, love, and moral choice. Rather than focusing on a single hero or plotline, the novel paints a wide picture of society—showing how personal decisions are shaped by systems like the legal system, economic inequality, and social expectations. Key themes include:
  • Justice vs. mercy — how laws affect people differently, and whether strict punishment leads to fairness
  • Redemption and moral growth — the possibility of change, even after hardship
  • Poverty and inequality — the daily realities of people living on the margins
  • Love and sacrifice — care for others as a powerful force for good
  • Social responsibility — how individual actions impact the wider community
The novel is known for:
  • Deep character development
  • Emotional intensity
  • Philosophical reflections on society and humanity
  • Detailed descriptions of history and everyday life
Overall, Les Misérables is less about a single storyline and more about asking big questions: What does it mean to be a good person? How should society treat its most vulnerable? And can compassion change lives?

It does have strangely relevant parallels! I’m in France and have friends whose kids’ schools are closed; my DDs are at middle school rather than lycée but there are lots of teachers absent today, I think because they are taking part in the demonstrations (which seem more sedate and well-organised today, so far at least). The revolutionary spirit lives on…hope it settles down soon though!!

Piggywaspushed · 06/10/2026 16:10

Yes, they are certainly manning the Barricades still.

Tarahumara · 06/10/2026 17:17

Oh how interesting @DuPainDuVinDuFromage. Hopefully the protests will continue to be peaceful.

DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 07/10/2026 16:00

It seems to have been mostly civilised yesterday, and it’s raining today (here, at least) so I think that’s it for the demonstrations for now! We’ll see if the government can find any money to make conditions in the lycées better…

In the meantime, it’s building up to a climax in the book (once I slogged through the interminable speeches from yesterday’s chapter!) - I’m expecting some exciting sections over the next few days!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 08/10/2026 22:45

Interesting! Thank you DuPain.

Today’s final paragraph is top Hugo. He really does capture atmosphere! I could feel myself holding my breath.

I came on to say exactly that @Pashazade ! Absolutely chef’s kiss 😁

MotherOfCatBoy · 10/10/2026 06:30

This is it, isn’t it!? The bit everyone imagines. I’ve just booked to go see the musical at the end of November!

Pashazade · 10/10/2026 11:31

This is just about the end of Act 1! (If I’m remembering correctly!!)

Oh of course! I’d forgotten that bit of the plot…..😁. Don’t want to spoil today’s surprise.

Ooh yes big surprise today. The plot gets going again!

Piggywaspushed · 11/10/2026 09:11

As ever, I had to Google who the man was. Hugo thinks we have much better memories than I do!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 11/10/2026 09:38

That guy hasn't had a lot of luck.
I couldn't remember the guy who features in tomorrow's chapter!

I'm quite intrigued by 'Any bat-winged or owl-winged individual' for chapter chapter two.

Thanks for the weekly schedule, Pashazade.

Piggywaspushed · 11/10/2026 10:10

I am ahead by a chapter and have no idea how !

Piggywaspushed · 11/10/2026 10:57

I think I missed out Friday's chapter. It does say something that I didn't even notice...!

TimeforaGandT · 11/10/2026 18:17

Thank you Pashazade. I have just caught up on three weeks' worth of chapters and really appreciate the weekly guides as to where I am meant to be.

I know we are getting to the meat of the stage show but I must admit I am way more invested in the lives of Marius and Cosette (and JVJ) than the Paris revolt.

DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 11/10/2026 18:31

Same @TimeforaGandT ! I was surprised about the identity of the mystery man, had forgotten all about him, and I guess JVJ, Marius and Cosette did indeed go to England?! Having never seen the musical I don’t know how the story ends but it does sound like the book has a lot more detail in the wider storylines, from all your comments!

MotherOfCatBoy · 11/10/2026 18:39

I was very surprised it was Javert as ai was expecting JVJ. Interesting parallel when Enjolras had him tied to the post and told him he would be shot and he didn’t utter a cry - like JVJ in the Thenardier attic. They really are mirror characters.

Pashazade · 11/10/2026 19:34

@DuPainDuVinDuFromage the musical skims the plot. Major plot points and only a handful
of key characters are kept in really. Which given the sheer breadth of the book is quite a feat. The ones they retain are very well done in terms of character realisation (apart from Cosette who just seems a bit wet!) and the story powers through. No time for side excursions!

OP posts:
DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 12/10/2026 06:52

I can see it must be very different, probably even less scope for detail in a musical than in a standard film adaptation!

Waawo · 13/10/2026 11:54

Idle thought while reading my other book this morning: that first sentence, nine words, would be at least three pages from Victor 😉
