Welcome to the second thread of the Les Miserables Read-a-long.

I've taken over from AgualusasL0ver in trying to keep us all reading together, but have copied the below over from the first thread.

I'll also be using the Christine Donougher translation (on Kindle) for posting in the main, but it doesn't matter which translation you have, they seem to follow the same breakdown.
It's a bit sprawly in places, some people have entire sections in the appendices, so I've started adding the first line of the chapter to try and lock in exactly where we are for that day, hopefully it helps us all keep together!

The only rules
The plan is to read ONE chapter a day and contribute/follow the thread as you see fit. There are c. 365 chapters, so we plan to take the year to read slowly and really get under the skin. Sometimes we have clustered chapters in past read-a-longs, and people do sometimes read ahead. All fine - but No spoilers until the relevant day.
Notes from previous read-a-longs

  • How you manage one a day is entirely up to you, some people prefer to store them and read all the chapters for the week at once, some read each day.
  • Sometimes these books can go off on a tangent all their own (looking at Mr Tolstoy), stick with it :-)
  • All formats and translations welcome. Sometimes the translation discussions are some of the most interesting conversations.
  • You WILL get behind at some point, but don't worry, just catch up when you can.
  • Tangents, things you discovered down a rabbit hole, articles, pod casts, clips of epic scenes when we get to them all very welcome on the thread.
Spoiler free summary , courtesy of Chat GPT below. Schmoop has book summaries so I will post those at the relevant points. ** Les Misérables is a classic novel by Victor Hugo that explores justice, compassion, and the struggle for dignity in 19th-century France. At its core, the book follows the lives of several interconnected characters from different social classes as they navigate poverty, law, love, and moral choice. Rather than focusing on a single hero or plotline, the novel paints a wide picture of society—showing how personal decisions are shaped by systems like the legal system, economic inequality, and social expectations. Key themes include:
  • Justice vs. mercy — how laws affect people differently, and whether strict punishment leads to fairness
  • Redemption and moral growth — the possibility of change, even after hardship
  • Poverty and inequality — the daily realities of people living on the margins
  • Love and sacrifice — care for others as a powerful force for good
  • Social responsibility — how individual actions impact the wider community
The novel is known for:
  • Deep character development
  • Emotional intensity
  • Philosophical reflections on society and humanity
  • Detailed descriptions of history and everyday life
Overall, Les Misérables is less about a single storyline and more about asking big questions: What does it mean to be a good person? How should society treat its most vulnerable? And can compassion change lives?

I’ve been catching up all week, read the first few pages of Sunday’s chapter this morning because I couldn’t stop, I’ll finish it tomorrow. The way the suspense builds is masterful! It’s going to be a busy thread tomorrow!

Onceuponatimethen · Today 13:19

@FuzzyCaoraDhubh it was wasn’t it!! Sounds like a few of us got the bug and read ahead!!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · Today 13:03

It was impossible to not read ahead!
I've been waiting for ages for the rest of you to catch up!

Onceuponatimethen · Today 12:54

Getting more and more dramatic! I liked this from today’s chapter: “If ambushes had never existed, it was here that they might have been invented”.

I’ve flicked ahead and Sunday’s chapter looks really long - something to get our teeth into for the weekend!

DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 05/08/2026 14:45

Ha, same! 😂

Waawo · 05/08/2026 13:14

Happy to admit to genuinely laughing out loud at Éponine's antics in the mirror - that is us in this house, waiting for DD!

TimeforaGandT · 02/08/2026 22:51

Thank you @Pashazade for keeping me on track.

Marius is too kind-hearted and generous giving all his money to Eponine. I hope he has a cunning plan to save JVJ.

I am surprised JVJ didn't recognise the Thenardiers as he is usually pretty switched on but I suppose it's out of context and they have aged. Looking forward to next week's chapters.

Onceuponatimethen · 02/08/2026 20:34

@FuzzyCaoraDhubh me too.

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 02/08/2026 09:56

Thanks for the schedule Pashazade.
I really enjoyed this section.

Pashazade · 02/08/2026 09:25

Well here’s next week, I’d got as far as Monday before I stopped myself. With an exasperated well I knew it was going to be him at the end of the chapter. Funny reacting to it even when I know roughly where the plot it going!

@SanFranBear I am with you on all of that. I have never seen the musical so I am totally flying blind on plot and really enjoying it unfolding.

I did sneakily read ahead a little bit (only a few chapters) and can’t wait to hear what you think of those as it is an exciting bit of the book!

SanFranBear · 02/08/2026 00:40

I've been sticking pretty religiously to the 'one chapter a day' and am thoroughly enjoying myself - what a fabulous book this is turning into. Obviously, there's a reason it's a classic but the twists and turns married with the history and real sense of place - I'm genuinely loving it!

Are the Valjeans still living in the convent? Will Marius track down Cosette? Will Jean Valjean come a cropper courtesy of the rogue Thenardier? And what about Javert - he must still be on the warpath...!

Allons y - je suis impatiente de voir la suite!

Onceuponatimethen · 31/07/2026 20:25

On the age gap thing between Marius and Cosette/Ursule/Aloutte, the legal age of consent in this era in France for girls was very young and I think set at age 11. I think it changed more recently than one might think as well. Found a link so edited: https://www.politico.eu/article/france-moves-toward-setting-15-as-age-of-consent-what-took-it-so-long/

Onceuponatimethen · 31/07/2026 20:22

Also still reading and very happy to see we are at 50%!

Fatsnowflake · 31/07/2026 18:20

I saw the musical in London last week and I sobbed! It's beautiful. But the book characters have more complexity.

DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 31/07/2026 18:16

I’m managing to stick to the daily chapter for now, at least! Worried about what Marius has just promised Eponine (“anything”) - is she going to ask him to marry her or something?!

FuzzyCaoraDhubh · 30/07/2026 14:36

That's where I've stopped too! I can't scroll too much ahead on Kindle, but it seems to be turning back into a history book.

Fatsnowflake · 30/07/2026 12:39

I read ahead. It gets VERY exciting. Then my heart sank when I got to 'A few pages of history' 🤣

Pashazade · 30/07/2026 08:30

Damn it I’ve read ahead to Sunday! 🤣. The story has certainly picked up for the first time in Chapters and chapters!!

Keep going @EmbroideredGardener !
It's a good bit of the book. Lots going on and no waffle.

EmbroideredGardener · 28/07/2026 22:36

Life got in the way and I am at the end of Part 2. I am determined to (once again) catch up and get back into my routine of reading while eating breakfast before work!

DuPainDuVinDuFromage · 28/07/2026 08:24

The big reunion today! I wonder if everyone recognises each other? Tempted to read on but need to get to work 😄
