Audible Recommendations

I’ve just joined Audible after reading lots of recommendations on MN.
I’m looking for distractions for a spell in hospital so things to listen to that are gripping or hilarious or otherwise ideal for taking me out of my current surroundings and making time pass more quickly! Maybe a big ask?! I’m generally open to many different genres and types of reading. Thanks!

Stephen Fry reads the complete Sherlock Holmes stories. Over 70 hours for 1 credit!

The Falco mysteries by Lindsay Davies. I love the domestic Roman details alongside the stories.

MealyPotatoes · 14/03/2018 06:35

Loads of great recommendations.

I recently listened to West Cork - gripping stuff.

Love Nina read by Nina Stibbe was lovely and funny. A nice, easy distracting listen for hospital.

The End of the Affair read by Colin Firth was excellent.

Gentlemen and Players/Different Class by Joanne Harris and the Simon Serrailer series by Susan Hill. All read by Steven Pacey who has a great reading voice I think. If I like a reader I tend to search for for by them and save them on a wish list.

Any Human Heart by William Boyd. Can’t remeber the reader but I loved listening to this last year.

Listening to David Copperfield at the moment which is fab.

captainjackandjill · 14/03/2018 01:11

Any of the Pratchett's esp read by Stephen Briggs
Amelia series by Elizabeth Peters read by Barbara Rosenblatt
Blackout/All Clear by Connie Willia read by Katherine Kellgren
To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis read by Steven Crossley
Agatha Cristies read by Emilia Fox, Hugh Fraser, David Souchet
Riyria Series by Michael J Sullivan read by Tim Gerard Reynolds

So many great book, so little time.

Alonglongway · 14/03/2018 00:53

My parents are from West Cork - feel like I’ve been hearing about that case forever

Ooh interested to see the recommendation for West Cork. The guy was pointed out to me in the farmers market when I was there last summer.

Downloading it now

WhyBeDennyDifferent · 13/03/2018 16:55

Omg I started Ready Player One this morning and am hooked! Not usually my type of book and I was worried it was a bit teenagey to start but I can’t stop listening now.

EatSleepRantRepeat · 12/03/2018 21:49

Make sure you download BBC iPlayer radio as well - so many comedy and drama episodes for free!

EatSleepRantRepeat · 12/03/2018 21:48

I tend to explore by favourite narrator - Benedict Cumberbatch's voice is dreamy and makes me sleepy - he's narrated lots including Casanova. Tom Hiddleston narrates High Rise, another low dreamy voice to get me off to sleep!

pongopig · 12/03/2018 21:45

Life after Life/ A God in Ruins -both by Kate Atkinson. Brilliant and have really stayed with me long after finishing. I’m also a big fan of Paula Daly books, I think it is always the same narrator who is excellent. I’ve enjoyed some Lianne Moriaty audiobooks but feel they get a bit samey after a while.

Avasarala · 12/03/2018 21:04

I love audible! Got through the whole expanse series and everything by Robin Hobb.

The Martian is so good (I could listen to the narrator read the phone book and enjoy it!) but the book is great.

That's all no good if you don't like sci-fi or fantasy though!

Also, if you want a little comic relief get some of the free listens of radio shows.

  • Paul Sinha - History Revision. It's funny, charming, and has so many really great little stories you've never heard in history but told in such a chatty way! And there's a load of series of The Unbelieveable Truth; it's hosted by David Mitchell and is just a great distraction. They're all free!
DogzBollox · 12/03/2018 20:59

Good luck to you @starryskies78 x

I am loving all these recommendations! Want to listen to them all IMMEDIATELY! I love podcasts too so will enjoy dipping into them.
The ‘couldn’t put it down’ effect is exactly what I’m after to be able just to drift off and enjoy for a longer period of time. Will probably be snoring my head off in seconds though!

It's a radio comedy drama series rather than a novel, but Cabin Pressure is the dog's bollocks.

WhyBeDennyDifferent · 12/03/2018 20:03

here is a list of good podcasts in case you fancy it.

WhyBeDennyDifferent · 12/03/2018 19:56

Lots of good ones recommended here so I’ve not got any to add.

Can I recommend podcasts though? They’re a fab way of passing time and mostly around an hour long so you don’t need to dedicate a lot of time. So many genres too!

NamelessEnsign · 12/03/2018 19:54

So glad other people love the Matt Haif book too! His other books seem to be with the same reader, Mark Meadows.

I’ve been listening to the X Files books by Audible Originals too - love having such familiar voices reading and some of the special effects, too.

I’m a bit obsessed Blush

Bapple · 12/03/2018 19:48

I loved My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece. It was read by David Tennant and very pleasant listening!

Also enjoyed:
Friend Request,
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine,
A Boy Made of Blocks,
I Let you Go,
The Woman Who Went to Bed for a Year, Beside Myself,
Holding (written and read by Graham Norton).

FlyingFairy191 · 12/03/2018 19:45

How to Stop Time by Matt Haig... I’m listening to it at the moment as I commute and it is BRILLIANT!!!!

PuntCuffin · 12/03/2018 19:44

Another vote for How to Stop Time by Matt Haig. The narration is fabulous.

I also enjoyed La Belle Sauvage, and His Dark Materials trilogy.

I love fantasy, so listened to the whole Game of Thrones series and am now working my way through Robin Hobb.

I tend to listen while walking, and get completely absorbed and keep walking 'just another chapter'! Not much help to you in hospital - hope the stay passes quickly.

I am listening to West Cork at the moment. First time I have listened to a series/podcast like this.

nong45 · 12/03/2018 19:41

Another vote for Dickens narrated by Martin Jarvis, I'm listening to a Tale or Two Cities and it's gripping.

Just finished A Far Cry from Kensington by Muriel Spark narrated by Juliet Stephenson which really made me laugh, especially all her different voices.

NamelessEnsign · 12/03/2018 19:39

Oh and if you have a library card and can get a pin from the service, you can get whatever app your library uses (Hoopla, Libby, BorrowBox etc) and borrow audio and ebooks without any fees, which is fab!

rm15 · 12/03/2018 19:38

Rivers of London hands down! Best audible series out there.

NamelessEnsign · 12/03/2018 19:36

Ooh you must listen to How to Stop Time by Matt Haig. The narrator is Mark Meadows and he’s marvellous.

I’ve really enjoyed Lauren Graham’s autobiography (Lorelai from Gilmore Girls) and Kate Mulgrew’s (Janeway). I don’t normally read biography but hearing it read by the actresses is marvellous! Oh and likewise The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher.

I’m dipping in and out of Mythos by Stephen Fry, which is fab. I have yet to listen to The Handmaid’s Tale but I heard the audio edition is chilling and gripping - I love the book and have read it several times, so it will be interesting to listen to something I know so well.

I work loosely in this area and visited an audio studio recently. So much fun!

TiredyMcTired · 12/03/2018 19:35

The Harry Potter books narrated by Stephen Fry are excellent. Belgravia by Julian Fellowes, Apple Tree Yard by Louise Doughty, Amy Snow by Tracy Rees, The Frozen Lake by Elizabeth Edmondson and La Belle Sauvage are all books I’ve listened to recently and thoroughly enjoyed. I wonder what the equivalent of “I couldn’t put it down” is for audiobooks? Grin
