sister used my baby name

i have always wanted a baby Kasper. Sister didn't know this so just a coincidence she announced her newborn Kasper 3 months ago. I didn't mention anything but smiled and kept quiet now feel really sad that the name i love so much i can't use.

I don't want my baby to have the same name as a cousin so won't use the same also wouldn't want to upset my sister. It would also be confusing as similar surname both double barrelled starting Smith and second double barrel is the same letter. So need a new name.

It's the Kas sound i love and Kasper sounds so strong. I had planned on the nickname Kaspie. I can't find a similar varient i love as much. Kassius, Kassian, and Kassiel just don't feel as strong. Hoping someone here may know a variant i hadn't thought of?

Currently watching Supernatural, so my suggestion is Castiel.

ChuffingNoraah · 19/10/2026 22:49

Edited - sorry I repeated a name you’ve already mentioned.

newroundhere · 19/10/2026 22:50

Are you pregnant? If so, congratulations! If not, I wouldn't worry about it until you are.

Letsgonowthen · 19/10/2026 22:52

Caspian. But I second that if you're not currently pregnant with a boy, I wouldn't worry about it.

watchingthishtread · 19/10/2026 22:52

Unless you're currently pregnant with a boy it's a non issue. Maybe you'll have a Cassandra.

beegeehee · 19/10/2026 22:52

yes but very early stage so not sure on the gender!

I like castiel but it puts me off that it's hebrew roots as i have no connection to that.

My family is Greek and Italian and DH is Indian

Tricky as I don't think there are many, have added both girl and boy below as I'm presuming its a boy but not 100% sure! The C and K are pretty interchangeable.

Cassandra
Cassie
Connie

Cassian
Kasabian
Caspian
Christopher
Kassius
Bastian

Cosmo

Kash?

Are you very close with your sister, so will end up shouting "Kasper, Caspian, time for tea" which might get right on your wick.

Is it better to now go for something totally different?

I'm surprised to find 2 sisters both wanted a name I can only associate with the friendly ghost.

I think if you pick a C name it won't look too similar even if the first syllable sounds the same. Cassius is lovely. Or go completely different so you forget about this.

itstoolateforsnacks · 19/10/2026 23:14

Honestly I think she’s done you a favour and in the long run youll be happy that you chose another name. Just have an open mind and make a list.

exexpat · 19/10/2026 23:16

Lucas?

ValleyofHumiliation · 19/10/2026 23:17

In Japan I worked with a lovely chap called Keisuke - pronounced kay-skay - which I thought sounded cool

beegeehee · 19/10/2026 23:18

it's the Kas I love, I don't know why but i feel my baby boy or girl will have a name starting Kas.

Mandarinaduck · 19/10/2026 23:19

Casimir?

But, as disappointing as it is that your sister used your favourite name, and I totally get that, I think you'd be better off going for something totally different.

ValleyofHumiliation · 19/10/2026 23:25

Cosmo nn Cas

mamaof4losingmymind · 19/10/2026 23:25

I really wouldn't worry unless you're currently pregnant with a boy. I didn't use any off the names I use to like before having children.

fancytoes · 20/10/2026 06:36

The child will be saying ‘Caspar with with a K’ his whole life.

You dodged one (for him) there.

DrWhosJazzyScarf · 20/10/2026 06:38

Cassian? Caspian?

PinkWaffleMaker · 20/10/2026 06:39

Maybe you’ll have a girl OP!

cannynotsay · 20/10/2026 06:43

Lots of family members on DH side have Kas starting names, and a few we call Kas 🤷🏻‍♀️
