sister used my baby name

i have always wanted a baby Kasper. Sister didn't know this so just a coincidence she announced her newborn Kasper 3 months ago. I didn't mention anything but smiled and kept quiet now feel really sad that the name i love so much i can't use.

I don't want my baby to have the same name as a cousin so won't use the same also wouldn't want to upset my sister. It would also be confusing as similar surname both double barrelled starting Smith and second double barrel is the same letter. So need a new name.

It's the Kas sound i love and Kasper sounds so strong. I had planned on the nickname Kaspie. I can't find a similar varient i love as much. Kassius, Kassian, and Kassiel just don't feel as strong. Hoping someone here may know a variant i hadn't thought of?

Just go with Cass, like the Rooneys

yes but very early stage so not sure on the gender!

I like castiel but it puts me off that it's hebrew roots as i have no connection to that.

My family is Greek and Italian and DH is Indian

David has Hebrew roots. As does Aaron, Noah, and countless other names we use daily.

Calvin
Kalen
Carmen
Konnor
Kenneth

Love Kalen

Roundbutsquaretoo · 20/10/2026 07:04

To be fair one of my DC has a name with strong Hebrew roots, and nothing to do at all with why we chose it. Not a soul has ever mentioned the roots of any of my DCs names so I wouldn't worry on that front too much.

UsernameHoarder · 20/10/2026 07:08

Are there any Indian names with that sound?

DozyCrow · 20/10/2026 07:10

Most of these don't have an English origin.

FWIW, Cassander is also a legitimate/traditional name, a Latinised form of the Greek Kassandros - although it might be confusing in English as the feminine form Cassandra is much better known / more familiar. There were Macedonian kings called Kassandros (Κάσσανδρος). Casandro is also used in Spanish-speaking countries.

There’s a lot of Indian names that start with kas, so as your husband is Indian you could name from that side.

eg:

  • Kasiraj / Kasinath / Kasinathan: Lord of Kashi or a name for Lord Shiva
  • Kashif: Discoverer or revealer
  • Kashik: Brilliant
  • Kashwin: Star
  • Kasish: Lord Shiva
  • Kasib: Fertile or provider
  • Kasar: Resembling a lion
Billy47 · 20/10/2026 07:44

I would chose something that reflects your childs unique heritage. One that has a European and Indian link like.:

Boy
Leo
Lucus
Rohan
Devon

Girl
Maya
Lina
Elena
Kiera

Also, your baby's dad might actually have an opinion. Mine vetoed my favourite baby name.

andfinallyhereweare · 20/10/2026 08:20

What about Cillian? Can be spelt Killian or Kilian… also I love Kassius

Overthebow · 20/10/2026 08:30

Won’t it be too similar if yours also has a name starting with Kas? The names could be shortened to the same thing and then you are back in the situation of having the same names again. I’d go for something completely different.

CheeseyOnionPie · 20/10/2026 08:46

I used to study with a Kasturi (girl) who was Indian.

Sassylovesbooks · 20/10/2026 08:54

By all means pick a name with the Kas sound, but don't rule out other names. You may pick a name and then decide once the baby is born, that the name doesn't suit. At the moment you have no idea if you're even having a boy! The Kasper situation may end up being completely irrelevant, if baby is a girl. Try not to fixate on a particular sound.

romdowa · 20/10/2026 08:58

I had names i adored before each pregnancy but when I got pregnant I ended hating them with a passion . Its like each baby was saying dont give me that nane.

noramoo · 20/10/2026 09:01

If you have a girl perhaps Kassiopi? I also have greek roots and have always loved the name. Or Kassandra. Sorry I know that's not much help if they are a boy...

beegeehee · 19/10/2026 23:18

it's the Kas I love, I don't know why but i feel my baby boy or girl will have a name starting Kas.

Why does it have to be Kas with a K, given that Cas is much more natural?

Ihavesomeideas · 20/10/2026 09:19

Cashel , an Irish name.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 20/10/2026 10:05

I know its a C rather than a K, but one of Wayne and Colleen Rooney's sons is called Cass. Which I've always though was a lovely name.

user1492757084 · 20/10/2026 10:12

Cassius
Kasimir

Cassandra
Cosima

AndAngela · 20/10/2026 10:16

Cassidy or Kassidy?

Blueberrywild · 20/10/2026 12:03

Ihavesomeideas · 20/10/2026 09:19

Cashel , an Irish name.

Cashel is a place name and isn’t typically used as a baby’s name. Daniel Day-Lewis used it I think, but that was exceptional.
Also, it doesn’t have the Kas sound OP loves (first syllable is Cash).

They’re going to have PHENOMENAL hair and features

dottiedodah · 20/10/2026 13:03

What about Christian ? Can be shortened to Chris which I like as well .My own Son just suited the name we chose for him,You may find the same thing happens to you OP!

Genevieva · 20/10/2026 14:51

You are clearly too young to remember Caspar Carrot. I think you will find an unrelated name you like better than a near approximation. If you really must have the 'kas' sound then the obvious one is Cassius, like the famous Roman statesman and historian. That is about as strong a name as you can get.

Was he related to Jasper Carrott?
