I just don’t want to do secret Santa!

Just a little rant!

SIL has asked again this year to do secret Santa for the whole family - third year in a row after being turned down the previous two years. The first year we said it wasn’t our thing thanks but no thanks, last year we just said oh well we’ve started buying presents already - I’m trying to be polite and non confrontational but she either will not get the message that we aren’t interested or simply doesn’t care and wants to push what she wants anyway. This year it was in a group chat so even more awkward.

I just don’t want to do it. It doesn’t fit in with your we finance Christmas, and I find the idea generally joyless and miserable. I enjoy choosing presents and wrapping them up nicely for people - I don’t want to select an item from an approved list and have everyone spend the same (may as well just buy something for yourself).

The thing is I could not give less of a shit if she and BIL don’t want to buy us Christmas presents because of money or laziness or whatever else, I just don’t want to be told who I can and can’t buy presents for and have the joy of choosing taken away from me. I’m really happy for people to just please themselves and spend whatever they feel
comfortable but it’s causing drama.

It’s not even like we are one of these massive families where some kind of arrangement (not secret Santa though please!) to keep costs down would make sense - it’s just 3 couples and a baby!

Christmas really riles you up doesn’t it? Well if you’re doing it all online then what’s the rush? Surely most things get delivered within a few days or a week at most, no idea why you are shopping now for Christmas. If you did take part in secret Santa you could leave it until December to get it all done. Try it.

OP: 'starting to shop now spreads the cost and the effort'
Pp: 'I've no idea why you are shopping now'

The state of this thread Hmm

But if everyone is spending £50 on a present that someone else has specified then it’s pointless isn’t it? Just cut out the middle man and spend £50 on a present for yourself

not pointless at all. we do secret santa on both sides of family we use an app and clearly state what we want both of us vouchers for specific shops. I save mine up and treat myself to a decent present something I wouldn't buy for myself but don't feel guilty when I have vouchers. we are your sis in law no kids here but to outside world we look comfortable we same as everyone else watching our money we prioritise it on certain things. we don't need sis in law buying "thoughtful " gifts like my sis in law buys more mugs for the house or placemats that don't match anything nor we don't need. anything that is not needed or wanted now given as presents goes on vinted or charity shop or regifted. you say you don't enjoy shopping so why don't you try your sis in law idea and spend the extra money on yourself like you instead

I do things your way OP but I think you need to consider that she may be suggesting this because of finances as cheaper to do secret Santa. You may putting her in a difficult position.

This. It may seem joyless to you but maybe financially a good idea for them.

sunnybaros · 18/10/2026 22:52

Why do people get so stressed over Christmas presents - just all give to charity instead of buying tat nobody really needs?

Bitsostuff · 18/10/2026 21:48

YouMustBeTheWeasleys · 17/10/2026 12:17

But it’s less about buying presents for her specifically and more than I don’t want to not be able to buy presents for other family
members because she has decided that’s what’s happening

Then maybe suggest to her that you don't exchange presents this year. That frees her from the obligation to reciprocate. Or agree a £5 limit with her.

ForCandidDuck · 18/10/2026 21:19

YouMustBeTheWeasleys · 17/10/2026 12:15

I’ve tried it before - I don’t like it. Joyless. Nobody else is keen to do it either.

I don't see how it's joyless at all, I love doing secret santa and it's much more affordable. You've also quoted "if she don't like your presents she can give them away".... now to me that's joyless!

EventuallyDiscussed · 18/10/2026 21:15

HouseBee · 18/10/2026 18:20

The problem is that by insisting on Secret Santa, the SIL is doing exactly that - expanding energy on something the OP doesn’t want to do….

Secret Santa still needs to be bought, wrapped etc…
And it’s much harder to do when you’re finding it joyless and you’ve been put in a position where you have to do it…..

But joyless and obliged is almost certainly how the SIL has felt for years, going along with the gifts for everyone thing. It’s her turn to have it her way for a change IMO.

I’m not “out shopping”. It’s not 1996. I’m browsing Christmas gifts on my phone while I watch something on the TV periodically. It spreads the cost and stops the mad rush in December. You should try it, maybe you wouldn’t resent celebrating so much if you were a bit more organised

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 18/10/2026 21:11

You said quite early on that you didn’t mind if she didn’t get you a present.

Because of that, I’m struggling to see what the problem is.

Are you just arguing for the sake of it? That’s fine if you are.

But if not, what is wrong with what I suggested earlier? You haven’t replied to that.

i really hate people like you, you find it enjoyable to spend far too much money on crap that'll end in a charity shop by january, and you don't give a shit about other people or that they probably can't afford to buy for you. Of course if you buy for them they feels obliged to buy for you. You are the selfish ones and SIL sounds very sensible.

Well said, she sounds batshit. Cannot believe she’s talking about Christmas presents in October and out shopping already, I wish I had her time on my hands.

Its a bit of fun but I think its more of a workplace thing Secret Santa .. silly presents but you dont want amd you dont know who got you it.
Say you are off on holiday lol there you go..solved😬

ThePoliteLion · 18/10/2026 20:26

YANBU
Secret Santa is the work of the devil.
it also makes me sorry for the planet when grown women and men feel they “have to” buy their sister in law, their neighbour, their child’s teacher some random Christmas gift. And before someone calls me a miserable git, I can assure you I’m not - I can see the joy in a carefully chosen gift given with love

You don’t understand the dynamics here at play at all

She could have just told everyone, “I have more than enough cat things, so thank you, but no more please.” Maybe followed by, “What I’d really appreciate some warm slippers, or a membership to…season tickets for…a gift certificate for…”

It’s not that hard.

Oh but it is. This has happened with me, though not about cats. You don’t know who’s going to give you a present, that’s the trouble. Themed presents come at you unexpectedly and from all directions. Family members can be sensible for years then let you down. Someone who never gives you presents goes on holiday, sees your animal in a present and then, boom! there you are, stuck with another one.

maxslice · 18/10/2026 19:28

QuietComet · 18/10/2026 18:39

Really?

The people who bought the gifts for her obviously thought she would love them.

My sister buys me personalised stuff that she thinks I'll love and are very thoughtful, but they're not my taste at all.

And you can also tell her kindly that you have enough of those things, but you’d be very glad to receive….whatever. If people don’t speak up, they have no right to complain.

maxslice · 18/10/2026 19:24

QuietComet · 18/10/2026 18:27

Ah yes, like my aunt who rescued cats and had 8 at one point.

Forever doomed to receive cat-based gifts.

I'm her 80s, she admitted she hated the gifts!

She could have just told everyone, “I have more than enough cat things, so thank you, but no more please.” Maybe followed by, “What I’d really appreciate some warm slippers, or a membership to…season tickets for…a gift certificate for…”

Also, why are your family talking about and planning Christmas presents for adults already?

Because it’s the middle of October? Very normal time to be talking about Christmas, I’ve started shopping.

I sympathise OP, last year my sister said the same thing but I do find it a bit joyless especially as last year we used elfster and people just put one thing on their list with a link so yes easy and yes cheaper and yes zero thought involved but like you I rather enjoy choosing and buying gifts and wrapping, I must be strange lol.
And why does SIL get to decide YOUR family traditions. DB should be having the conversation.
Just say in group chat what you said here and you enjoy choosing xmas presents for everyone and you are happy to agree a budget per person but rather not do SS. What does the other couple think?

Yes exactly you understand - you’re treating the whole thing as something to just tick off which is fine but I would just rather not bother if that is the case. The other couple are PILs and they aren’t keen either. For some reason they have also included another couple that we don’t spend Christmas with and don’t currently buy presents for (they obviously must do but I don’t see why that should be my problem)

Just create a poll for everyone in your group on WhatsApp?

Q: Would you like to participate in secret Santa this year?

Option 1: Yes! (These people can then sort it amongst themselves)
Option 2: No thanks, it’s not for me.

If everyone else feels as strongly as you, then the results should make the sentiment pretty clear.

maxslice · 18/10/2026 19:09

EmptyInTheValley · 18/10/2026 14:12

Christ. Can no-one just acknowledge that the OP doesn't WANT to do this, for her own good reasons. And neither would I.

It has been acknowledged. Still, people have also acknowledged that it’s not all about what OP wants or doesn’t want. There are other people involved. What’s also clear, is that OP dislikes SIL to start with.

AleaEim · 18/10/2026 19:08

I cannot believe you don’t want to do secret Santa! You are not 5 years old, why do you need to buy presents for everyone individually and why do you want to receive a present from everyone individually from your family? Christmas is so commercialised and a waste of money, I happily welcome secret santa as it reduces spending and time spent buying crap nobody wants or they can get themselves.
