Anaesthesia truth telling.....

Has anyone heard of this? My dh is having surgery soon and I just need to know the answer to something truthfully once and for all. As awful as it sounds I thought I could use this opportunity in the days after his operation to find out whether he actually has done something that he always said he wouldn't. I have no evidence just a couple of random bits of info which may or may not be connected. Its not that serious an operation but involves a general anaesthetic.

OP posts:

I've had 5 GA. The last one, I remember them telling me they were going to remove the breathing tube, then the sensation of it coming out, then the trying to wake me up, then the craziness of me not breathing for an hour or so in recovery. So not everyone is oblivious.

I remember all the conversations I had in recovery.

Op I don't think this will work. You are confusing it with sedation - like those videos people make of post wisdom teeth surgery in the US when they are off their tits on whatever drug they've been given.

Ive had 100s never remembered a thing but obviously every person is different. I asked the anesthetist once about saying stuff as I was worried what I might say and he said people don't usually make a lot off sense and mumble quite a lot so it often can't be made out. Admittedly he might off just told me that so I don't worry but I can't imagine many people are telling their secrets

Notgrowing · 15/10/2026 07:55

Its general anaesthetic not truth serum.

ShortAndIntense · 15/10/2026 07:56

I imagined whole conversations,
one of which was that my husband wanted to adopt a sheep and keep it in the garden. I kept saying that I didn’t want a sheep. Honestly, you’re more likely to get utter nonsense than anything else.

JavierBardemswife · 15/10/2026 07:58

No, its a load of rubbish.

When I had my tonsils out years ago it was the same day that heath Ledger died and I remember crying to the doctor/nurses that I was utterly devastated about it.

I am not remotely devastated about it.

I have no idea why the fuck I said that. I am not even a particular fan of his.

Minasama · 15/10/2026 07:58

That wouldn’t be ethical, and he will be confused so may make up nonsense.
I used to cry and cry when I came round from anasthesia, I wasn’t upset but it just can have a weird effect on the brain.

So you couldn’t trust anything he said in that state. You won’t be anywhere nearer the truth, just getting the product of a confused mind.

Quartzfairy · 15/10/2026 08:04

Well, my early 20’s DS told me all the juicy details of what him and his mates had got up to at a recent festival when he was coming round from an op. I’m normally on strictly ‘need to know’ information!

I watched a video on this yesterday by an anaesthetist and wondered if anyone had any experience of it. Its amazing how people on here will advise people to go through someone's phone when their dh is in the shower etc. I'll never find the hidden treasure now!🤣😂😆😅🤣🤣

I also find snooping through someone’s phone to be unacceptable behaviour too if that helps.

When recovering from an op, my husband told me he has seen a lizard wearing a monocle and that they had exchanged pleasantries. I wouldn’t place too much weight on anything he says at this point. You won’t get any answers.

Fuck! the lizardmen conspiracies might be real!

l keep getting an image in my head of Bertie Wooster chatting with a very sophisticated reptile. It’s kept me happy all morning.

MissKittyFantastico84 · 15/10/2026 12:37

I’ve had GA three times. In the most intense of the ops, I fully believed I had been taken to the hospital kitchen and left there to recover. I was not in an NHS kitchen.

In actual fact, the medication that the doctors and nurses on my ward called an actual truth serum was the anti emetic injection (stops you throwing up). It makes you feel high and then you feel very open and honest. I told the nurse a few things I hope she immediately disregarded.

I didn't mean as soon as he's coming round, I'm not that callous.😊 Yes that makes sense that he could make up something random. He generally gives himself away without realising it as I know him well apart from this one thing that I know he'd deny forever.
Do you know this from personal experience, or workplace experience? You seem pretty sure.

No from seeing videos of people online. It was a bit of a thing online where people would video loved ones after surgery etc when they were high as a kite and spouting absolute nonsense

largeprintagathachristie · 15/10/2026 19:30

By the time you see him, the anaesthetic will be wearing off. It’s the hospital staff that hear the nonsensical stuff. I announced very loudly that I’d been kicked in the head by a horse (I hadn’t.)

I agree with a previous poster that you might have been watching videos of (largely) Americans under sedation for dental stuff.

pandoraboxs · 15/10/2026 19:36

I think planning to use a vulnerable situation to your advantage is a really awful

DorsetKnobBiscuit · 15/10/2026 19:43

Is it just me or is this a funny way to go about marriage?

Shoobadadoo · 15/10/2026 19:46

I’ve had GA and don’t remember anything strange. And emergency GA where I was sobbing saying I was cold so freezing so cold in so much pain so cold, I was dying I needed morphine. Then had morphine and scratched my face off like a druggy because it didn’t agree with me

seahorsessky · 15/10/2026 20:22

Boreded · 15/10/2026 01:34

Yes he is more likely to tell you something that he has lied about before, but equally it could be that he makes up random nonsense or agrees to anything.

It’s a bit dodgy though to probe him like that when he is coming out of sedation…I would feel violated…it would be like rooting through his phone.

Agree. Plus people say things that aren't true (you are a duck, is one I remember).
And by the time you're back from recovery, in my experience at least, you're normal again. They are very unlikely to let an adult have a partner in the theatre, and would probably have a lot of concerns if you tell them why you want to be there!

TheSunIsAlwaysThere · 15/10/2026 20:37

This is an awful plan.

XMissPlacedX · 15/10/2026 21:11

I went nasty, I remember having a go at the poor nurse who wanted to take me to the toilet and I accused her of being a pervert. I felt awful when I came around properly and couldn’t apologise enough.

BotoxOrPuffins · 15/10/2026 21:15

I was deliriously happy like I was high. I wanted to ride a bike.and tell everyone I had paper underwear. All with my face half bandaged up after quite full on facial surgery.

ClaredeBear · 15/10/2026 21:16

I’ve had many GAs and I’ve always come around very quickly and just been concerned with whatever pain or sickness I’ve woken with.

RageBates · 15/10/2026 21:19

A lizard wearing a monocle 🤣

DaveMinion · 15/10/2026 21:45

There used to be a truth to it as an old anaesthetic agent called thiopentone was used as a truth serum. Very rarely used nowadays though (mainly in obstetrics so unlikely he will have it). Modern anaesthetic drugs don't have that effect.

Greybeardy · 15/10/2026 22:05

Any use of thio as a truth serum was iirc just demonstrated to be that it made the patient more responsive to suggestion - doesn't mean they told the truth. It's not widely used in many areas outside obs/propofol allergy these days. The majority of commonly used anaesthetic drugs wear off quickly however people are still advised not to make important decisions/sign important docs for at least 24 hours post-op because they could be making an unreliable decision/talking nonsense. It sounds like a pretty unpleasant thing to even be thinking about doing.

Greybeardy · 15/10/2026 22:10

CostcoFanofThree · 15/10/2026 02:02

no, shit that comes out of someone's mouth while coming out of anesthetic is trash "there's a squirrel", much later, "i want that squirrel", much later, "i want my squirrel stew" ridiculous nonsense. "ohhhhh, ohhhhh, my teeth, i don't know where my teeth are"
and once the pentobarbital wears off (generally when in the recovery room) they are relaxed but aware (so you missed your pathetic opportunity).
the pain meds they are sent home with are not truth serums.
if you think your partner is a liar this "opportunity" will NOT help dispel or confirm your suspicions.
i've been at the side of hundreds of people both going under and coming out of anesthetic.
where did you get this wild idea from? tv? a book? i really find it hard to believe someone with any basic education would think this. do you equally think drunks tell the truth?

where in the UK is using pentobarb routinely for anaesthesia?! Pretty sure it's only used for animal euthanasia here.

CostcoFanofThree · 16/10/2026 00:56

@Greybeardy you're right i meant propofol!
