Anaesthesia truth telling.....

Givemethatcontrolpanelnow · 15/10/2026 01:31

Has anyone heard of this? My dh is having surgery soon and I just need to know the answer to something truthfully once and for all. As awful as it sounds I thought I could use this opportunity in the days after his operation to find out whether he actually has done something that he always said he wouldn't. I have no evidence just a couple of random bits of info which may or may not be connected. Its not that serious an operation but involves a general anaesthetic.

Well, it’s not a truth that you can rely on so I’m not really sure what’s the point?

It does work and he’ll most likely not remember you ever asked him or whatever he divulged but the window of opportunity is narrow. You need to be pretty swift.

absolute rubbish. (DOI: anaesthetist.)

I've had GA a few times and I've never been confused/ spouted rubbish.

No, I was similar. Mainly by complaining that it fucking hurt and I wanted some fucking pain relief NOW. I was 16 at the time and ordinarily the most timid little mouse but I swore like a trooper until they gave me some morphine to shut me up again (and they were definitely trying not to laugh whilst doing so).

It's fun being allergic to sulfonamides. They give you all the best alternatives, apparently.

Listen to to surgeons not dream beleivers and get some help it may help with lots of things

I had surgery recently and I remember being woken up and I was completely with it; I didn't hallucinate and I had no patchy memory after waking up. So if it affects your husband like it affected me, he's going to see what you're trying to do and have no problems remembering it!

This may or may not be the case. One of my (adult) kids had an op and I was in recovery with them and stayed overnight, got special dispensation as they are vulnerable and I was a clinician myself. They would have written exactly what you have, and truly believe it, but I can say it was not the case.

Ponderingwindow · 18/10/2026 23:30

The loopy-ness is going to wear off by the time he leaves the recovery room either to come home or be moved to a bed for the night. You also couldn’t trust anything he said was true.

I wake up from anaesthesia first thinking that the operation hasn't happened yet and then knowing it has and asking if it was okay. No truth telling. Pure self interest.

no, shit that comes out of someone's mouth while coming out of anesthetic is trash "there's a squirrel", much later, "i want that squirrel", much later, "i want my squirrel stew" ridiculous nonsense. "ohhhhh, ohhhhh, my teeth, i don't know where my teeth are"
and once the pentobarbital wears off (generally when in the recovery room) they are relaxed but aware (so you missed your pathetic opportunity).
the pain meds they are sent home with are not truth serums.
if you think your partner is a liar this "opportunity" will NOT help dispel or confirm your suspicions.
i've been at the side of hundreds of people both going under and coming out of anesthetic.
where did you get this wild idea from? tv? a book? i really find it hard to believe someone with any basic education would think this. do you equally think drunks tell the truth?

Pentobarbital isn't used as an anaesthetic in the UK, so this is nonsense.

LemonLymanDotCom · 18/10/2026 23:09

When I came round from a recent surgery, it definitely wasn’t truth I was telling to the doctor who came to check I was ok in recovery. What I meant to say was:
‘Hey, I recognise you from the day unit, you were having friendly workplace giggles with the female nurses earlier today, you guys seemed like you were having fun. That’s nice’

what came out instead was ‘I know you. You’re mean to women’ and then I passed out again.
Poor guy…. Never saw him again to apologise.

So in my personal experience, it’s bollocks.
(side note, kinda creepy you might think to do this & take advantage of your husbands vulnerability. Shame on you)

Vivi0 · 18/10/2026 22:23

When I came round, I was apologising to the nurse for not doing my homework.

By time I got back to the ward, I was a lot more with it, but sleepy.

I don’t think visitors are permitted in the post op recovery rooms. The confused state you are thinking of (hoping for) will probably have passed by the time you see him.

Flamingbanana214 · 18/10/2026 22:16

I woke up and asked the nurse if she'd stolen my teeth while I was in surgery. But within a few minutes I was back to normal, a bit tearful but apparently that's common.

Rubysilverfox · 18/10/2026 22:16

My DD talked absolute nonsense when I sat with her after having a tooth extracted! It was growing horizontally across the roof of her mouth and it needed removing before her brace!
I thought she had brain damage it was that bad! The nurse just told me it was completely normal and she was recovering well!

Charlenedickens · 18/10/2026 21:54

This is really odd op, abusive in its own way

pinkpony88 · 18/10/2026 21:46

XMissPlacedX · 15/10/2026 21:11

I went nasty, I remember having a go at the poor nurse who wanted to take me to the toilet and I accused her of being a pervert. I felt awful when I came around properly and couldn’t apologise enough.

That’s nothing! Years ago I was passing a hospital near me where a patient had come round from the anaesthetic and gone crazy. They escaped the hospital, followed by two male nurses trying to bring him back in. When he reached the road he grabbed one of the nurses and threw them in front of my car! That was a journey I won’t forget in a hurry! 😮

mondaytosunday · 18/10/2026 21:45

Other than throwing up every hour for the rest of the day my son was completely compos mentis after being under GA.

FionnulaTheCooler · 18/10/2026 21:36

WhatsItAllForAnyway · 18/10/2026 21:28

That's interesting. I've had two GAs in the last few years and just remember going from out of it to waking up reasonably suddenly. I don't think I said anything at all. Do love the relaxed feeling after though.

I was the same, I don't remember being in a recovery room at all, I was back in my bed on the ward when I came around and fully lucid. Maybe I did spout some nonsense in recovery but thankfully I don't remember and I'm sure the medical professionals see and hear all sorts.

Christmasbear1 · 18/10/2026 20:57

When you wake up from GA, you're very groggy and a nurse is there. By the time they wheel you to recovery I'm completely with it. He won't be confused/groggy by the time you get to see him

userpere9083 · 18/10/2026 20:30

Coming round from anaesthesia is just a wobbly haze. Don't get involved in this because it is unreliable so it will cause you problems. If he says yes he had an affair, you'll dismiss it as gibberish. If he says no he didn't have an affair, you'll dismiss it as gibberish.Youll be no further forward and he may very well remember the question and you'll be in more of a state than you are now.

RosaMundi27 · 16/10/2026 08:41

People talk absolute gibberish coming round from an anaesthetic. I'm more concerned about you though, what kind of person's reaction to their partner's operation is "I wonder if I could interrogate him about something he didn't want to tell me".

Goldengirl123 · 16/10/2026 08:34

I have said some strange things coming round from anaesthetic. Nothing true!!

Cla7 · 16/10/2026 01:32

Sorry but this is absolutely ridiculous. When I woke up, I confessed that I had an affair with Brad Pitt and that I felt guilty because of Angelina and girls code.
By the time I was back in recovery where DH was allowed to wait, I was very clear in my head again and fully able to control what I say. I think your imagination is way off.
