Feeling less safe alone in daylight: is anyone else noticing this?

I’m a female mid-40s and feel like over the past year I’ve had an increasing number of incidents where I have been out and about alone and felt intimidated by a lone man.

Is it just me, am I becoming more paranoid as I hit menopause age, or is this a thing others have noticed?

Here are some examples. Would these scare you too?

For context I live in an affluent market town and all these things happened in “nice” areas in daylight. I’ve always been very independent and adventurous in the past, and would think nothing of travelling alone or going for long bike rides or trail runs or hiking alone. I’m not a timid person.

  1. walking along affluent residential road in middle of day. Phone out as sending friend voice note. Man passes me from behind on one of those illegal type e-bikes, clocks my phone in my hand, 30 seconds later turns around and rides back towards me. I had sensed something dodgy so had dropped my phone into a bush before he turned round. He sees I no longer have phone in hand and rides away
  1. walking down wealthy residential nice road. Daytime. Man (who looks out of place in that area) walks the other way past me. 30 seconds later I’m aware he’s turned around and is behind me. I notice a house nearby is having building work done and builders are there so I go up the driveway of that house and chat to the builders until the man is gone.
  1. Out for a walk I’m about to head into the woods down a public footpath. Lone man behind me so I stop to see which way he’s going / let him pass and he says “are you worried I’m a migrant trying to follow you” or something similar.
  1. Out on a bike ride on a country lane. Man on moped passes me and clearly checks me out. I turn the corner and notice he’s stopped in the next lay-by. I turn around and cycle another route.

Despite being a lone runner I’ve actually just signed up for a running club as I’m not sure I feel safe running alone now. I’ve also stopped using my phone when out walking about.

That's what I was thinking.

I grew up in a rural village there were a few ethic minorities I grew up with decades ago and they were just part of who we grew up with but hitting secondary in town about half the school was second and third generation asian - and quite few mix race and other ethnicties.

There are fewer ethic minorties in rural britain - partly as there's little work to move to but rural britain have access to cars, trains, planes and TV and internet - we are not completely cut off from the world outside of London.

Here there was an issue with a romanian gang and beggers pre covid - but since then it's mostly native born groups at leasts going by accents - that seem to cause most issues and often drug and alcohol related and petty crimes and assults are up in shopping area and police are reponding with more visible police.

I've no idea what OP area is like and if it's a perception or actual issue in her case or case of more people being more aggressive - which we saw post covid here but has died down pretty much completely now.

Yes large amount of ‘brown people’ in hoodies where I live… outside London and not in a major city. It is quite normal.

I totally agree with you OP. Our area in North London (where we have lived for almost 20 years, feeling quite safe up til now) has recently (say in the past year or so) had an influx of men who definitely scare me - visibly drunk, visibly drugged, doing drugs on my neighbour’s bin right on the street in broad daylight, two men breaking into several houses on our street in the middle of the night a few weeks ago, separately a neighbour had their door kicked down by three masked men last week, several rapes in two local parks which was unheard of before now, my daughter’s school has warned students about these rapes and told them never to let men/boys separate them from their friends - I am definitely feeling less safe, for me and my teenage DD 😫

I haven’t but that’s not me trying to minimise how you’re feeling because how you feel is how you feel.
I live in an area, like many, where wealth rubs up against poverty. I’ve always just walked about living my life, happy walking about in the dark with big headphones on listening to a podcast. The majority of crimes reported on around here are drugs related and involve people in that world. It’s not my world, I keep myself to myself when out and about. I don’t look over my shoulder when I’m walking in the dark, I stride with confidence and crack on with my life.
As a mixed race woman in her 40’s I’ve come to learn I have a place in the world and I’m not letting any dickhead make me live in fear or cower in shadows or change my route without good bloody reason. I’m not scared.
But that’s because I’ve grown up needing a thick skin and maybe I’m now just a fully fledged thick skinned person who naively believes nothing will happen to them. And that’s okay with me.

I am 57 and have never walked about in daylight or at night wearing headphones. I have 2 sons and have said that I don't think it is a good idea. I feel it is important to know what is going on around me. I do realise we are all different!

Gonna start a tally every time the word m........ appears online anywhere for absolutely no reason at all.

OneoftheWeddingPeople · 25/09/2026 16:57

Me too flashed at by white men only.

But that said also travelled in Egypt in my mid twenties with a female friend. The abuse from local men was disgusting and relentless. Next level. Ended up confined to our hotel room.
Haven’t visited North Africa since and never would again.

You actually exposed it yourself, but there we go.😂

The irony being that the 3 times I have been flashed were all BY WHITE MEN.

BEHOLD I AM UNMASKED(!)
You really cut deep there, man. I am shaking at the horrors of my clearly lacking moral fibre that you and you alone are exposing to the world.
NOW I AM SCARED TO GO OUT IN THE STREET!
Your work here is clearly done.
A real gotcha there.
HTH.

Rachelshair · 25/09/2026 16:46

I haven't noticed any change but I don't live in a particularly affluent area. I always avoid men when alone, cross the street, go a different way etc. I would be more wary of older ones though, teenagers may look more dodgy but most are nice.
I also go the long way round if I think the creepy neighbour mighy be twatting about outside too.

Don't bother, it's an immigrant bashing thread, again.
They don't want to hear how white men are creepy or horrible on the roads.

You also seem unable to grasp the point I was making that people feel vulnerable as their bodies weaken and slow when they get old.

You are clearly utterly captured by your ideology if you jump to a conclusion that people's sense of vulnerability due the frailty of ageing is the fault of Reform's PR machine 😂😂

I am obviously not hanging about where men who like wearing balaclavas and all black go to film their social media posts. If you see them everywhere you go then maybe that is why you see them as more of an issue than the ones that were near me that I see as an issue.

They are all men. That is the long and short of it. Angry men with nothing mind other than violence. That is the issue.

You seem to be struggling to understand.

The men in masks were travelling to where women's rights activists were meeting in an attempt to intimidate and silence them. That is why I saw them. Because they were travelling to harass us. Not everywhere I go - but where they chose to target us.

You also seem utterly completely unable to grasp the point I am making about what the media are choosing to portray - you can go on about ALL MEN as much as you like, but the point is that the media is extremely biased about which masked men threatening and intimidating that they are arsed about. Only some men's intimidating behaviour is being addressed. Other victims of these men are not being cared about at all. Including by you, it would seem.

Reform didn't exist then, so I don't see how that would be relevant. I know it must disappoint you to realise that Reform are not behind every fear that everyone in the UK has had in their life. I'll give you a moment to recover yourself.

You might also want to ask someone to explain to you that the Good Law Project are a complete crap organisation of politically motivated incompetents who keep losing court cases.

Ok then, you do you boo.

You might want to explain to them that Reform and other right wing parties deliberately distort figures to push their narrative that crime is getting worse, when in reality it is going down across the board https://goodlawproject.org/dodgy-statistics-and-fringe-beliefs-the-groups-behind-reforms-anti-migrant-agenda/

I don't think this is uncommon for older people.

About two decades ago I did focus groups with older people and it was a revelation to me how vulnerable they felt. They know that they are not physically able even to run away from danger let alone fight anyone off. The people I spoke to were predominantly living in poorer areas. They were very conscious of how vulnerable they were and most of them certainly did not go out when it was dark anymore because of this.

Dodgy statistics and fringe beliefs: the groups behind Reform’s anti-migrant agenda

Reform has been exploiting fears around attacks on women to stoke hate against migrants. Good Law Project investigates the flawed statistics and the group with far-right links that have helped spread its narrative.

I'm just basing it on my parents and and aunts, all in their eighties and still regularly walking and/or taking public transport into the city centre to shop, meet people, or whatever. Small city (c 250k) with what I would deem 'average' amounts of petty crime, antisocial behaviour and drug use.

Oh my goodness. What a reply. The person who is fake news-ing is you. If something does not fit your political narrative, you just have to deny it happened.

I have been the woman being screamed at and intimidated and threatened by these men. I have been there at our meetings with these masked men threatening us. I have many friends who have been at these events throughout the country. Yes it did happen. Look it up. All well documented.

Deny it if you want. But don't have the hypocrisy to accuse others of creating fake news if you do.

But where on earth do you live that you feel so unsafe? (I mean, approximately, I don't mean you need to give your address!)

Too dangerous? Can you say some more about that? Where do you live that you can’t go out?

I do go out but with DH, I don't not ever go out, just not alone, I just live in a fairly run down average town. The high street isn't very pleasant so I avoid and DH walks to the shopping centre with me as it's through the jitty for about half a mile or we go in the car. I just don't walk round the town alone

I'm retired so there is no need, I don't have to leave the house for work, if I want to go out DH will come with me, it's not like the old days when you had to go to the bank and shops

I have never seen a large group of men other than the ones who came in their hundreds to my area a few weeks ago. I am not on social media with all of it's fake news, so maybe that's what the issue is.
