Devastated as a result of physical/emotional affair

I’m feeling very low at the moment and have nobody in ‘real life’ that I feel able to confide in, for obvious reasons given the nature of what I’m about to disclose. Sorry for the long post, I need to get it all off my chest.

I’ve been married for 5 years and we have young children. Up until a year ago, it was a very happy marriage and I can say hand on heart that I had never so much as flirted with another man. Our life together has always been cosy, safe and content. Nothing was missing.

Then another man (a parent at the school our children attend) started showing an interest in me. I was surprised at first, being only a few months post partum and not feeling particularly attractive. I also had no interest in him and quite honestly he gave me the ‘ick’ as I knew that he too was married with young children, yet was flirting with me and very obviously trying to test the waters. I thought to myself what a scumbag he was and even told my husband about it!

This went on for a couple of months. Gradually (and looking back, inexplicably) I found myself warming to him. He was so charming, funny and we got on so well. I started looking forward to seeing him around school and receiving messages from him. One thing led to another and we started meeting up for drinks, coffees before it eventually turned physical and we slept together.

Shortly after it turned physical, his behaviour changed and he started withdrawing from me. Not messaging as much, less warm. Then he would suddenly get back in touch and be as warm and flirtatious as ever, like nothing had happened. By this time I was completely hooked on him. The uncertainty and confusion seemed to make me want him more than I ever had before, which makes no sense as it also made me horribly miserable.

This cycle of warmth and distance went on for a number of months, without anything physical happening. Then one day I confronted him about how he was making me feel and it seemed to really take him by surprise. He became emotional and said he had withdrawn because he felt scared and guilty about what we had done. Said he had real feelings for me. We kissed, and more, and it felt so much deeper this time.

Then he withdrew again - physically - but this time he kept communicating with me and said the guilt of the physical affair was too much for him. He said he didn’t want to lose our emotional connection as he had realised he loved me. This triggered yet more confusion and hurt on my side. I felt rejected and couldn’t understand why he was okay with the ‘emotional’ affair if he was suddenly so concerned with the immorality of it all.

He continues to message me, calls me babe and gorgeous, tells me he’s thinking of me, wants to see me, all that stuff but without the sex.

Meanwhile my husband has no idea about any of this and I am wracked with guilt along with the realisation that if I confess, I will implode his life and our children’s lives. I recognise that I am utterly selfish and have behaved appallingly. Yet somehow, I continue to be completely obsessed with and plagued by thoughts of this man. Every time he contacts me, my heart leaps and it’s like a ‘quick fix’ despite knowing that within a few hours I will feel shit again. I feel like I am head over heels in love with him but a part of me can also see how absurd and foolish this is.

I don’t know what to do, as I don’t want to destroy his family or mine, but my husband deserves to know what a piece of shit he married, and I feel like I will never be happy again, to the point that suicide feels like the only way out at the moment.

OP, please read what I’m about to tell you.

I have been in your exact situation. He was the one who cut it off completely in the end. And my god, I regret every day not being the one to end it because it would feel so much better than it does when they do it to you. Trust me on this - if YOU end it, you won’t be torturing yourself months down the line wondering why. If you end it, you’re in control of the situation and your feelings.

This was two years ago now for me. I’m not saying I no longer miss him, or that I don’t think about him every live long day, but I no longer need him to make me happy.

It gets better but it takes time. I KNOW how hard it must feel to cut things off - but it will feel a whole lot better if YOU are the one who makes that decision.

Did you go back to you're husband and did you ever tell him about the affair?

KaleidoscopeSmile · 22/09/2026 14:58

I feel rather sorry for OP but the number of posters on here basically saying that it's not her fault, it's all him and the OP has absolutely no agency in the matter and she was "targeted" or "love bombed" or my favourite, "postpartum hormone shifts" is fucking ridiculous

I'll get stick for this but I don't care.

You need to tell your husband everything.

People talk and eventually it will get back to him.

Your husband deserves the truth, remember your marriage vows.
If you were writing to say that your husband had had an affair, most people would be saying to leave him, it's only the same thing, but you're the one with the affair.

This

as usual these threads are full of excuses. It’s hormones, it’s his fault. And advice to keep it secret.

your husband has been deceived. You have behaved badly. He has the right to know

SoBoredOfSelfDoubtHowToGetOut · 22/09/2026 15:06

Dearie me.

Just stop.

You’ve betrayed your husband and family unit with a man you didn’t even like. And then you’ve allowed him to play with you like this.

No man is ever worth the mental anguish he’s putting you thorough.

Please block him and ignore him. Leave him alone forever.

You now have to focus on your poor family.

Pedant61 · 22/09/2026 13:42

These things happen, OP, so don't beat yourself up about it.
But.....Block this man, and stop seeing him.
And you must absolutely not tell your husband - why would you want to hurt him? You have to keep this all to yourself, and learn to put it behind you.

Thanks for all the responses. As trite as it sounds, it feels impossible at the moment to cut off all contact with him. I know it’s ultimately what I need to do to have any chance of feeling happy again, but (pathetically) I depend so much on that contact at the moment to get me through each day. It really is like a drug as someone said, it’s terrifying.

Its not an addiction. It's an ongoing decision you are continuing to make to put this man before your relationship with your husband. Read your post back, imagine your husband reading this. There would be no going back. How hurtful for your husband it would be. Your husband has no agency in this, he is making decisions about HIS LIFE based on what he thinks his relationship is. That's totally unfair.
Don't say you aren't lying to your husband, you are, by omission.
This isn't to shame you, but if you are making the DECISION to carry this on, you need to be clear about the impact on your husband should he find out.
If it's what you want, go for it, but be fair to your husband and end your relationship. You cannot have your cake and eat it.

Charlottian · 21/09/2026 22:54

End it. Do not talk to him again.
Get some therapy. If you think an affair will destroy your family, what do you think your suicide will do? Get help, for your children’s sake.

THIS!!

Have you spoken to him today OP? Has he messaged? Have you?

you know what the right thing to do is. You also know what the sensible thing is. The moral thing. The approach which gives you the best chance of happiness. What will give your marriage hope. What is in the best interests of your children.

it’s time to make a choice. End it, block him, ignore him, avoid him. Or don’t.

You’ve already lost your mind. Going cold turkey is how you get it back.

I have actually saved this because I like it. This is going to help me with a situation (not an affair) but not to talk to someone who brings me pain yet I always let them! So thankyou!

yes, I told him how bad I’m feeling and that I am struggling - everything I’ve said on here basically. He said he wants to protect me and look after me

Sassylovesbooks · 22/09/2026 19:23

Others are correct, the only way to stop, is to withdrawal completely. That means blocking him. Until you block him, you're going to carry on in this vicious circle.

The longer this crazy cycle continues, the higher the risk, either your husband finds out or his wife. My suggestion is for you to seek some counselling, to try and work through your own emotions. You also need to explore why you had an affair, what's missing from your marriage?

You know what you're doing is wrong, you feel guilty. You know this situation can't continue. My guess is, you are not the first woman who this man has had an affair with.

You need to think about what you want your future to look like. If you don't love your husband, and don't want to remain married, then divorce him. If you do want to stay married and you do love your husband, then you need to block this man, so you can concentrate on your marriage.

Freeme31 · 22/09/2026 19:25

So is he prepared to leave his wife snd family for you ? And are you prepared to leave your children (50% of the week) because you can stay away from him. ? Do you love him so much you would sacrifice your own children?

Your feelings won't be nothing compared to your husband's when he finds out.

I've been there, I know.

You and your husband both agreed to be each others protector when you got married.

As far as he's aware, he's keeping his side of the bargain, are you ?

Man has affair - mans fault

Woman has affair - mans fault.

The double standards here are apalling. The poor husband, his wife behaves like a snake with someone they see almost every day and he has no idea.

This

Yogafiend · 22/09/2026 20:10

@Hopeless23 my take is that you should tell your husband and his wife. Don’t let the “I will implode my husband and kids life” excuse to continue and leave these 2 people in the dark. Unless you know for a fact they would rather not know. Be a decent human being and don’t let them live a lie. And hopefully uou learn from this mistake and grow as a person.

Lmnop22 · 22/09/2026 20:12

I think your only option is to come clean - the lying and the guilt and the secrecy and worry of it one day coming out will otherwise eat away at you.

Decide what you want, tell your husband everything and also what you want (whether to work on marriage with him or separate and pursue this other man/be single).

I genuinely don’t see any other option that doesn’t eat you alive with uncertainty over the future or the fact your world could implode at any day in the future if someone sees or says something

This

It’s a ticking time-bomb, the OP is so infatuated with this other man, she’s not going to let him go. It sounds if he is only stringing her along, possibly in case she tells his wife. It won’t be long before either her husband or his wife discovers the affair. Or a parent at school, or a friend, etc. I suspect if this man did leave his wife, which I doubt he will, the OP would leave her husband.

If she wanted to remain in her marriage, she’d block this man but hasn’t since she posted several weeks ago about this, nor does she have any intention of blocking him.

The correct thing to do is tell her DH but she won’t. It’s all going to end in tears, the whole situation made worse by their children in the same school. If she won’t think of her husband, she should think of her children.

Agreed.
I asked her outright if she wanted to blow up her marriage.
She didn’t answer that question, but did answer others.
So I think we can take that as a “Yes”.

No I don’t. One of the main reasons being that it would mean losing my children half the time and that isn’t something I can even bear contemplating.
