So upset and confused

I’ve nc for this

Mum of two boys. I’m not with their dad. One 19 who has moved out, but still relies for financial support if needed and one 16 who is still at school and lives at home.

The older one told me he’s on the work course this week. He keeps in regular contact with me and his brother and called yesterday just for a chat. I was talking to him about the course etc and something felt a little odd. I couldn’t put my finger on it.
The older one shares his location with his brother. They get on really well and are always in contact. I tried to call my older one this morning and I couldn’t get through. I needed to speak to him about something quite important so after trying several times and leaving messages, I asked my younger one to check his location to check he can see where he was. I don’t ever usually do this. I trust them both and I’ve never felt I need to check locations unless I’m worried for their safety.

my younger one looked a little surprised when looking at his phone and then said he’s at home. I said are you sure, please don’t lie to me as I’m really worried about him. After some time he said he was at the airport! I said he can’t be because he was catching a train this morning and the course is only about an hour from where he lives.

We were only on holiday a few weeks ago and most of his stuff is still here, but I went up to check for his passport and it’s missing. I am upset and confused. I have always encouraged them to be independent, if he had told me he was going away, I would have been happy for him and given him some safety tips and reminded him to look after himself because he’s never travelled abroad without family before. I can’t get my head around why he would lie.
I don’t want to ask him because I don’t want him to fall out with his brother, but I’m also really worried because he’s in a foreign country and I don’t even know if he’s taken out bloody travel insurance. I don’t even know why I’m posting. I usually post to ask for advice. This is completely out of my hands and I can’t do anything about it, apart from pray he returns safely

I don’t think 19 year olds use facebook. @upsetmum8888can you ask his dad ?
Maybe he didn’t tell you because he thought you’d disapprove?

Ayarreet · 05/09/2026 16:57

Did he meet anyone on the holiday?

shellyleppard · 05/09/2026 16:59

@dreamingofgoodhair whatever social media they use.... Snapchat etc

TakeAnyFormDriveMeMad · 05/09/2026 17:05

Tell his brother to message him saying "you at the airport mate?" With laughinh emojis and say he was nosey and checked his location. He is an adult and allowed to go on holiday without telling his mum at the end of the day but I do get its a worry

ChopSueyCharcuterieBoard · 05/09/2026 17:06

I would just send him a message saying that if hes in any difficulty with anything then call you, any time from anywhere and for any reason, and then just leave it until he calls or returns home.

There's obviously a reason why he didnt talk to you about this (calling and sending multiple messages then getting his brother to check his location when he didnt respond quickly enough, despite him calling yesterday, may well have something to do with it, that sounds pretty stifling for a 19yo honestly).

upsetmum8888 · 05/09/2026 17:12

Thank you for your replies.

I genuinely wouldn’t have had a problem with it. I very rarely lose my temper as my parents were really strict when I was younger and I’ve always tried to be open minded with my kids.

If his dad finds out he will absolutely hit the roof. It will become a huge problem within our family. I can’t tell him so now I’ve been left with all this worry and I can’t even talk to anyone about it, apart from on here. I don’t want his brother to think he’s done something wrong by telling me the truth. The only reason he was asked to check location was because I couldn’t get hold of him and I was worried about how he sounded last night.

he’s not on Facebook so won’t be posting on there.

MyArtfulGreySloth · 05/09/2026 17:15

Do you still get a weird dial tone when calling abroad, is that still a thing? I’d say you called and noticed it sounds like he’s gone away.

upsetmum8888 · 05/09/2026 17:26

@ChopSueyCharcuterieBoardhe asked me to do something for him and said it was quite important. I was trying to contact him about that. He doesn’t know I called him several times as the call wasn’t going through and I sent one message to say can you get back to me about xyz. That didn’t go through. He has no idea his brother has checked his location and I’m not going to say anything to him about this. I get it’s stifling for a 19year old, but most of what I’ve said, he’s not aware of it as I mostly leave it to him to contact me since he’s moved out and have helped him as much as I can to move out in the first place. I know he has a girlfriend, so he might have gone away with her, which is no problem, but I do have a huge problem that he’s gone away and not said anything to anyone. It’s more of a safety concern more than anything else

With this sort of overreaction from his parents it's no wonder he's decided not to tell you.
He's 19. He's an adult. He doesn't live at home. He really doesn't have to tell you what he's doing.
Why will it be such a massive thing when his Dad finds out?
It's probably about time you both backed off and let him grow up.

SucculentsAnd · 05/09/2026 17:36

I’m not sure I fully understand the issue, OP. Why will his father be furious? And I had to reread to see that your son doesn’t live at home. I’m assuming the ‘important thing’ you needed to talk to him about explains why you’re so anxious about him going abroad?

DewDropsAndCobWebs · 05/09/2026 17:38

Dude
He is grown, moved out, so it isn't up to you are his dad to be upset if he goes somewhere without an announcement

upsetmum8888 · 05/09/2026 17:38

I do get he is an adult and he doesn’t have to tell us anything. But he’s lied. I’ve helped him move out so he can live a life away from home and learn to be independent. But he’s just turned 19 (last two months) if there’s an accident, a major incident, anything can happen. He hasn’t thought about any of that.

I’m over 50 and always give my sister my flight details and name of the hotel I’m staying at, in case something happens. She does the same. I would not have tried to stop him. I wouldn’t have even been annoyed. I would have been happy for him. I’m worried that he’s gone off without saying anything

Why will his dad hit the roof he’s gone on holiday?

ShitFacedShakespeare · 05/09/2026 17:40

I don’t want to ask him because I don’t want him to fall out with his brother

Stop putting barriers in the way, that just causes more drama.

Ask him and tell him you made his brother check his location.

That's it.

No one owes an explanation.

Bir it’s really rather odd for family not to mention they are going away.

My dad told me and my siblings when he booked to go on holiday!

We tell him and each other if we are going away. It’s just general chit chat.

we send photos to our family what’s app of what we’re up to.

I find it more odd to keep it deliberately secret.

Not as odd as the OP turning to Mumsnet instead of asking her son what he's up to.

Uricon2 · 05/09/2026 17:43

I think your level of panic about this might be one reason why he's not sharing things about his life.

People have fought on the frontline in wars younger than him.

You said messages.

Just because you decide to share information it doesn't mean he has to.

If this was one of my dc I would seriously be looking at my behaviour and what made my dc not talk to me.

Between your multiple calls, messages and then getting his brother to check up on him, and you thinking his dad will hit the roof, I can see why he just wanted to bugger off on his own/with a friend for a bit.

Thingsthatgo · 05/09/2026 17:45

I understand this is a shock, and it is a bit bizarre that he hasn’t mentioned it to you, but I think you need to take a breath and calm down. It’s not such a big deal that your adult son has gone abroad. Young adults travel abroad every day without their parents. Is it possible that he didn’t tell you because you would try to stop him going?

LADDO · 05/09/2026 17:47

Maybe the ‘work course’ is abroad?

BeEagerRubyBird · 05/09/2026 17:48

Lots of people don't always pass on details of their whereabouts on holiday to relatives though OP. Him not doing so is not inherently irresponsible. Why do you assume he won't have thought of this and that? It does seem perhaps you are infantalising him a bit? You say he's only just turned 19, that's over a year since he became an adult. He works and doesn't live with you. Saying his dad will hit the roof, that seems really extreme?

I do understand why you are worried, but I also think you need to take a step back and realise that as an adult he could move abroad without telling you if he wanted to. Even in saying 'you wouldn't have had a problem with it's, you're kind of suggesting you have a say when you actually don't. I suspect there is something in that that explains why he hasn't told you?

Gettingbysomehow · 05/09/2026 17:48

I was made to leave home at 16 and survived. I dont think you need to worry about a 19 year old.

canklesmctacotits · 05/09/2026 17:54

It’s not the going abroad that’s the problem - he’s 19, he’s quite capable. It’s deliberately keeping this from his mother with whom he spoke at length last night. That’s not an oversight, it’s a choice.

I don’t think you need to worry overly, statistically nothing terrible will happen to him. Don’t say anything further. See what happens when he gets back and if/when he mentions it. If he never does, you’ll have learned something about him - but then you have to be extra vigilant about the rest of his life. In all likelihood it’s a lads’ trip of the sort you don’t appreciate. That wouldn’t be a terrible outcome. But it could be something else entirely, something more concerning. Keep an eye out for company he’s keeping, money he’s spending, ideas he’s spewing.

Another huge issue is whether or not you tell his dad. To know your joint son has behaved so out of character AND know that his dad would go ballistic, and not tell him…I don’t know that I could keep that secret. Maybe you can enlist his dad is keeping a watchful eye on him?

upsetmum8888 · 05/09/2026 18:05

Thank you to everyone who have shared their thoughts. Maybe I’m overthinking and overreacting.

I don’t want to contact his dad and tell him as I don’t want him contacting him to have a go for not saying anything. He’s quite protective and I understand he didn’t want to tell his dad. I’m the total opposite when it comes to reacting to stuff. I would not have been bothered. His dad has a new partner and a new life. If my children tell me stuff and ask me not to share it with their dad, I don’t and they know this.

I’m more concerned because he’s gone without mentioning anything. But maybe he doesn’t trust me. I won’t contact him and I assume that he won’t contact me until he wants something. I’m not creating barriers to create dramas. I have serious health problems right now and I don’t need a family fall out about a holiday. I need to stay well for my family, especially my younger one, so I can at least help him move away and be as independent as his older brother.

I only posted because I would have expected families to share holiday plans with each other, but it seems I’ve incorrectly assumed that.

He told me his course is in Liverpool. He lives in Southampton, so I haven’t misunderstood the location of the course.
