How can I set boundaries with an overtalkative gym instructor?

My gym instructor is a really nice guy. He is so personable and friendly and remembers everyone's name.

But he will talk about himself, hobbies and his wife for ages. I love chatting so at first was really enthusiastic and asked lots of questions while lifting which wasn't a big deal, i love a chat. But it's the same conversation over and over about the lasted thing he has created for his hobby.

For the first time I was really irritated. I haven't been to the gym this week as a result. I turned the topic round a couple of times to something else, even inputted my own story but his eyes just glaze over. As soon as i enter he bee lines for me as I am keen to chat.

He actually really helps me so i don't want to be cold. He improves my form and gives me tips.

If it was a conversation and I could share too I wouldn't mind. How do I change this dynamic?

I thought i could excessively talk about myself to shoo him away, is that a crazy thought?

He has a badge that says 'gym instructor' he doesn't do any PT. He helps everyone use the machines

I love chatting

Maybe try to be a bit less chatty, and confine yourself to gym-related training matters to see if that makes a difference. If that doesn't work, headphones it is - even if you're not listening to anything.
at least he's not trying to sell you aloe vera shite

binplan · 02/09/2026 16:09

Headphones regardless, but also - hi, and I’m cracking on. I’ve worked out I spend more time gassing than working out when I’m here”.

Oh, even better. "Less chat please! Thanks!" Or talk to the front desk and ask them to pass on the message.

Would you manage without tips? Even better then to say you want to exercise without conversation or interruption.

If you're paying him for a one-on-one session (or not)

tell him you need quiet to concentrate on your form and counting your reps

Or bring your earbuds. You don't actually have to be playing anything.

MyAmpleSheep · 02/09/2026 13:26

Ask him to chatter less. It couldn’t be easier.
You’re paying him money, you get to set the tone.
