As soon as he opens his eyes, he picks the phone that has been playing in his ears all night and starts browsing. Walks around brushing his teeth to it, only puts it down for the shower. In the week, he will then sit and have his breakfast looking at it, either ignoring the kids. Or, more likely, the kids cluster round his phone (I ban screens at the table for dinner).

Then, if it’s a workday (he works from home) he’ll move from his phone to his computer where he’ll work from about 9:30-5:30 and then come off his computer and pick his phone back up and browse that, show it to the kids, then watch tv, then after tv is done and the kids are in bed, will play video games until 2am and then put his podcast or whatever on to fall asleep and the days repeat.

If it’s the weekend, he’ll browse his phone and video games the entire time he’s in the house. Sometimes I feel like I’m prising him out of the house away from what he’d rather be doing - looking at his phone.

Right now, I’m unwell and the kids are watching him play video games and when I asked him to stop he snapped that “it’s a rainy Saturday, what else are they going to do?” before they noticed him gaming, they were playing with toys. The kids, by the way, are fixated by screens and will do anything to get more of them.

Divorce is financially impossible. So don’t suggest that.

He won’t hear me. Gets very defensive. He is addicted. And I don’t know what to do.

Any help or advice?

It’s not that he doesn’t see his addiction, it’s that he doesn’t want to do anything about it and you can’t make him. If you can’t leave then you’ll have to make your life around him as best as you can.

I suppose I don’t know how to make him see it? Or do I just not try? He is firmly in denial. He thinks everyone lives like this!

It's an addiction like any other. If it was alcohol, what would be different?
I'm sorry you're in a tough financial situation, looks like there's no easy solution (you can stay or you can divorce and neither option is easy. You have to choose the less bad)

Well as he is firmly in denial and you can’t leave then all you can do it keep going as you are. You have a life which is great. Let him support you financially and just live your own life. There’s nothing else you can do

I have a chronic illness and I couldn’t afford to run a life on my own right now.

It’s very complicated. We have discussed divorce a lot. I think if we’d been in a better position financially, we’d have done it.

He doesn’t see it as a problem largely, but I think it’s because he is so deeply addicted. Like, he can’t leave his phone / computer alone. No hobbies. Really hardly ever leaves the house unless to do school pickup or something walk the dog (which he will often not remember to do unless I say “did you walk the dog today?”). He has no social life.

I have a lot of friends and do a lot of stuff because i’d be depressed otherwise.

Very occasionally he’ll hear what I’m saying and admit that he’s depressed and that it’s not enough. But then do nothing about it and carry on.

Well if you won’t leave him, you will have to learn to live with it 🤷‍♀️

Why can't you divorce? You'll probably get enough benefits to get by. I wouldn't put up with this.

Ask him why he married and had children when all he's interested in is his phone.

Also - I hate the message he’s giving the kids “grow up and waste your life on a screen!” He once admitted he’d be very sad if our children grew up and spent as much time on a screen as he does. He is lonely and has hardly any friends. Zero hobbies.

But if I say anything, he gets defensive.

Spend more time on things you enjoy either with or without the kids.

So I do, I have built a life entirely out of the house. I do hobbies and sports etc.

But I don’t like having a relationship with a screen addict. Perhaps I can’t change it and need to accept it. I really don’t know.
