I feel absolutely hopeless with my four year old. Whenever he is scared, overwhelmed, or recently if he’s feeling socially rejected by peers he will hit or pull their hair.
It’s been going on for years. I don’t know what to do anymore. I have tried EVERYTHING. He has SEN, most notably developmental delay and communication delay. Poor impulse control in general BUT he went nearly a whole year at nursery with zero hitting, despite doing it at home. So I KNOW that somewhere in him he has the capacity to resist the urge to hit, even when upset (and he was unsettled at nursery to begin with but still no hitting). But he just no longer seems to use that capacity.
I’m not a wet parent. I’m uber calm but I have extremely firm boundaries. I feel like I’ve done all the “right” things. I just don’t know what to do so at this point I’m just crowdsourcing ideas - if ANYONE has specifically dealt with a child who persistently hits and you got it to stop, please let me know how you did it. Any books, any resources, please give me your advice. Did you see a professional? If so what kind? What did they do?
Respectfully, because I’ve seen threads go this way, if you had a child who hit a few times and you got them to stop with a firm telling off then I fear we’re dealing with different types of children. I’ve another child who would not dare hit anyone, so I know it’s very different.
It’s so fucking hard. I cry about it literally every night. I feel so lonely, the holidays have been absolutely awful. I can’t take him anywhere because I have two children so cannot supervise both effectively at eg soft play or kids activities to ensure children aren’t hit. For various reasons too I find the hitting SO difficult to deal with for my own emotions. I was so determined to have a calm home for my children and I very successfully brought him up in a calm home so it is so confusing to me when he started showing this behaviour age 2.
I’m desperate for him to be able to go to school in September but I just can’t understand how he will be able to if he can’t stop hitting. I so badly want him to make a friend, and I know he badly wants friends too. His little face lights up when he sees other children. He’s so caring when he is calm. He’s so bright, he’s taught himself to read with barely any input from me other than just reading to him. I feel like he could do so much if we could just get past this.
Please don’t respond if you’re going to be unkind thank you ❤️
