Some missing context.
We are in France, in someone's home and so this will be 2 hours of apéro followed by up to a further 4 hours of meal.
The snub - all of them. This is a social norm here with this group. They eat together every day at their works canteen. You'd think that's enough but it's not. So much of the talk is about people and things that none of the non-colleague people can follow.
If I don't try to start a conversation the other women don't really say anything. A monologuer would be a wonderful relief. If I ask a question it's a pretty monosyllabic answer.
We are all 50+ and mostly not yet retired. I think the one who is newly retired is the husband of the dressing up wife and he restores cars from the same period.
I did say to DH last night I find this incredibly hard work. He pointed out he finds it hard work doing my big family meals in English when we have them annually in the UK, but he comes, smiles and tries to enjoy them.
I have been so antisocial of late because I'm loving what I do and I have my own company so I'd rather do that. Kids (x4) are finally out of home and I get to put me first for the first time in 25 years.
@clary What would be my version of small talk - good question. Something about my past, differences between here and UK, holdiays, travel, kids, current events beyond the local area, a lottery win, food, restuarants, gadgets, some trends, work-life balance, retirement plans (I think this is going to be what I try this evening).
No religion, racism, vaccination, politics or money preferably. Pretty much anything else I could have a stab at.
