I had to put extra air in rear tyres last week before a holiday to the coast to cater for a very full and heavy boot. All good.

Now home and need to deflate. Don’t have my own air machine thingy (and actually, are these worth having? Is a decent one expensive?) and don’t feel at all confident doing it by sticking a sharp object in tyres valve so -

Can I use the one at the garage to deflate too? If I set what the PSI should be will it know to take air out and not put in?

Please dont judge, I’ve done all sorts of small maintenance jobs myself but not this.

Yes they work both ways! Inflate or deflate to the psi you are after.

Yes, you can deflate them with the garage gauge.

If it is a manual one, instead of pushing the lever down to add in air, just attach the connector to the valve and it will release air. You can check the level on the gauge. If it is digital, then put in the pressure you want it to be.

You could buy one of those mini compressors, but to be very honest, the one I have has only ever been used for inflating balls and pool toys.

It is either something we know, or something we don't.

So when you have been to deflate them, then this just be something you do now know. 😀

The ones that plug into the 12V socket aren't expensive and work really well. The one that came with my car looks crappy but it does the job.

I have a Makita battery powered one because my 12 V socket has a fault that blows the fuse so is useless. It's really good but you need to keep a Makita battery with it and they're £££s.

That’s useful to know thanks, as actually so many machines at local garages are out of order when you need them too.

Do you have a link to yours? Not against getting the battery too if it’s easy to store as could be a useful investment.

Does the job and it's only small so lives in the boot. It runs of the 12V socket in the car.

We've had it about 3 years and it's not broken yet, even during a 3 month period where we had to use it to top up a slow puncture every few days that the useless garage couldn't find.

DP has power tools for work and his preferred brand is Makita, so we already had a few of the batteries so I didn't need to buy one.

But I only have this because I don't have a working 12V socket in my car - there's only one and it keeps blowing the fuse. I've used the plug in ones before and they also do the job although the Makita one is a bit easier to use as there's no cable to deal with.

But I figured it was cheaper to get a battery powered compressor than pay someone to investigate an otherwise inconsequential electrical fault.
