Been sent an odd video by friend, unsure what to think

Well the OP was clearly uncomfortable with the video hence posting here. If she chooses to believe that he sent it by accident that's up to her.

Of course she could also decide that this sort of sexist, juvenile video gives her an insight into the sender and she may reevaluate her opinion of him.

Or she might do what women usually do and pretend it didn't happen/doesn't matter and carry on as usual.

I managed to send my friend a very odd gif of a sexually suggestive bottle of ranch dressing - no head but it had arms (beckoning in what I assume was supposed to be a suggestive manner) and legs (splayed).

For the life of me I cannot tell you how I managed to do that, why it even exists and what combination of buttons my fat thumbs accidentally tapped to do that. Luckily my friend thought it was hilarious.

My friend sent lots of similar videos to random people (including her boss).

It’s easily done by accident.
I’ve seen people add some random gifs by accident on here on serious threads that have confused the person who posted and given other people on the thread a good laugh.

I still laugh thinking about the poster adding a dancing elephant and having to apologise and admit she had no idea how she’d managed it 😆.

In all the years I've been online, from the days of IRC and beyond... hackers do not send random short 'funny' video clips. They do all sorts of other things - pretend to be someone else to get money, send links for you to click on that are dodgy, but not short video memes for giggles.

But I tell you what DOES happen - people send things from other peoples accounts because they think that is funny - ie, Joe Bloggs down the pub grabs Steves phone and sends the first female contact he can find something rude... And they do test boundaries by sending something rude themselves and seeing how it lands... and then claim 'oh I was hacked' when they regret it later.

Nah that was a lie. I've had a few messages from men in relationships or married. I usually post back pretending to be dh saying I'm asleep and what do you want? One we know fairly well socially and he was totally squirming when we saw him next. Creep. Has a lovely partner too.

I’ve known multiple people who’ve been hacked and send videos.

It happens on Instagram all of the time.

I was following an animal sanctuary page and then the videos were half naked women.
They obviously didn’t post them themselves as they lost loads of followers and income over it.

Good choice too, live and let live, no need to create issues when there are none, we have enough to deal with without creating them.

People genuinely pocket dial the wierdest stuff. I once received a photo of a friend's husband sat up in bed topless and was going to message her with a WTF until I scrolled up and saw that somehow I had pocket dialled her a photo of my DH sat up in bed topless. 😱

Thankfully she is less suspicious than I am (or knows how crap I am with technology) and realised it was an accident and she and her hubby decided to turn it into a joke, for which I was grateful. 😂

I sent my oldest son a video about an episiotomy 🥲 it was one of those random TikTok ones where you swipe away quickly and it sends it to whoever is top of your list 😓

every time I get a TikTok that I really want to move away from quickly (usually a random one that is not a normal part of my interests) I forward it to someone else without wanting to

This! So disappointing when you think someone is a good / decent guy & then they show you that they’re a creep after all.

Some of these tales of accidental photos and shares are giving me a laugh, so thanks for that! So far I've managed not to accidentally send anything too embarrassing, myself. As far as I know! Maybe it's happened and they were just too kind to tell me about it. 😅

OP, glad it turned out to be innocent. It doesn't seem like the type of thing a man would send to a casual female friend (unless it was in context of a conversation), so I'd be inclined to believe it was an accident. (And it wouldn't really bother me if a friend was sending that to another man as part of a joke or chat. Not like it's an unsolicited photo of himself or anything pornographic.)

Just be light hearted about it, I assume this wasn't for me haha! And leave it at that. It possibly a mistake and he'll be mortified.

He may well not send it to other people. All he’d need to do was have his phone unlocked in his pocket and accidentally knock the ‘share’ command to WhatsApp any old shite to someone by mistake. My mum does it all the time, except because she isn’t a young man, her algorithm doesn’t recommend her that kind of content and I just get random twee crap from her. Frequently followed by a message saying ‘oh for gods sake I hate this phone!!!!!’ or ‘do you know how I would done this, I didn’t mean to’

Sounds like a mistake or scam as out of character as you describe these friends. Best check in case they have been hacked. If not a mistake I suggest you tell them you had assumed it was and say no more. They will get the message.

Hacking an instagram account and posting dodgy content to that accounts page isn't remotely the same as sending one off videos to a single individual by a messaging app.

Hackers steal instagram accounts and post content that causes people to follow a link, open something that downloads malware etc.

The value to them is in doing this to accounts with thousands or hundreds of thousands of followers, as it will get them a high hit rate, they'll do well out of it.

They can also access the insta's dm's and send messages that way, but again the value is in them having loads of followers who really will be thrilled to receive a message from that account and are more likely to do as they're asked.

Hacking access to an individual persons whatsapp etc account does not go hand in hand with sending a one off lewd image/video, low rate of return from that, and the recipient most likely knows the account holder well enough to question it.

If OP had said Facebook... it's possible, but usually the first person to notice is the account holder as their account is spamming everyone on their friend list with the same thing and it is typically a dodgy looking link, not a video.

Not all platforms are the same, and the most likely reason someones whatsapp account has sent a mucky video or photo is that the account holder sent it, by accident.
