She’s careful not to say that - she says ‘troubling and disturbing’ allegations.

ETA She doesn’t say ‘similar’.

Edited

Hasn't there been another "source close to the Sussexes" who said she was told not to discuss it at all in order not to prejudice the investigation?

I'm sure I read that

MrsFinkelstein · 23/10/2026 19:30

Why would the Met open an investigation into a US citizen who has never resident in the UK?

It would be US or Mexican authorities who would be investigating in 2018, surely?

And with all the scrutiny of her relationship with her father since 2017 not a sniff of a CSA investigation was picked up by any Press?

This is a new investigation. What happened to the 2018 investigation when Meg was shown a letter by the MET regarding what I assume where child abuse allegations?

If M was told in 2018 presumably her other siblings would also have been told at the same time?

Why then would her brother and sister have stood by him if presented with the same information? Why would the brother only now 'discover' the things on his laptop? Why wouldn't he have been suspicious before?

Why would M know and they wouldn't? and why wouldn't she tell them herself if she was so convinced that she had to cut all contact? Surely she should have been esuring that everyone else around him was able to make the same decisions to keep all children safely away from him if she thought he was that dangeroys?

So many questions in this. So much is very very odd.

I don't think her half siblings would have known. If her story is true, she was told of the allegations by an RPO, presumably because of the possible ramifications for her as a member of the royal family.

Since Thomas Markle was not convicted or even charged with any crime, there's no reason his other children would be aware of any allegations against him.

Is it possible that what Harry meant, about how she doesn't have a dad because of him, is because he knew about these allegations and he made her choose between him and her father?

No. Not possible. Tom was dumped before the (so called) letter

I sincerely hope the next statement is not the RF categorically told me not to release the information, and they destroyed all correspondence. The "not our fault" defence.

I hope the journalists over the weekend follow the mantra of "assume nothing, believe nothing, check everything" in order to make sense of the situation.

I find myself going "but why was this said, this doesn't fit the time line etc" so for me, I will return to my normal reading not posting position! Have a good weekend everyone!

Until we find out more about the letter, either from Meg publishing it or the Met acknowledging it was sent, then it seems very convenient timing that horrific news about Megs family, came only after she secured the marriage to the Prince …..

Maybe now we have the answer why Harry and Meghan never criticised Andrew. Who knows 🤷‍♀️

Oh my goodness. Of course!

IcedPurple · 23/10/2026 19:07

diddl · 23/10/2026 18:38

So, how credible were the allegations in the letter if they did not lead to an investigation?

Is it not possible that there was an investigation but nothing came of it?

In her statement, she says that the supposed 'letter' contained ' troubling and disturbing allegations' against Thomas Markle. That's rather vague. The obvious assumption is that the allegations are related to today's news, but for all we know they could concern something completely different. That's if the 'letter' exists at all.

Yes, that's always been strange...

LookOutLookOutTomCruiseIsAbout · 23/10/2026 19:03

I agree with a PP that Meghan has maybe seen an opportunity to excuse her treatment of her father. H+M have been criticised lately for wanging on about reconciliation and attempting to cosy up to Harry’s (rich and influential) family while ignoring Meghan’s (poor and ordinary) father. So she may have leapt on this as a way to vindicate herself and silence her critics, without stopping to think whether this story matched all the others they have told, and whether sitting on information like this while calling yourself a campaigner for children’s safety might actually be worse reputationally than ditching a parent for whatever superficial reason. The Sun mea culpa read like a Sussex press release to me, it was so reverential - how her “incredibly brave, honest and impactful” statement will “garner immeasurable public sympathy”. The usual manifesting in other words - I expect there’ll be more of that to come from those in the Sussex press WhatsApp group.

There's a difference (to me) in "creating" a letter and "inventing" a letter.

I'd say "Creating" would involve producing it, or a photo of it as proof, and, no I don't think she would do that.

"Inventing" is saying there was a letter but oh dear I wasn't allowed to keep it so you have to believe me - and that I think she's more than capable of doing.

They like their plausible deniability. So whereas the first, if caught out, is clearly deliberate fabrication, with the second she can open big eyes and say "but I thought it was the MET. Maybe I misunderstood who was showing me, and I can't remember the actual wording, and maybe they only told me and so there's no evidence..." and avoid admitting it was made up.

Yes this is exactly what I meant, obviously I don’t believe she would physically make one.

So she didn't know about the allegations until after the wedding, so that isn't why he wasn't invited in the first place - so that isn't the main reason.

And the Met are saying they aren't investigating him.

I feel very uncomfortable about the whole situation - child abuse shouldn't become a circus.

Absolutely agree.

Who cuts their dear daddy off over "allegations", though?? Sure, cut off the ice cream vendor or the old man who lives at the end of the street ,because you never really knew them anyway. But your dad? You cut him off cold turkey and completely from yourself, your DH, your DC over allegations?!

Nah. PP used the perfect word: she's retrofitting this allegation to suit her choice to cut him off because she was ashamed of him and thought he'd jeopardize her ascent.

Exactly. Would you cut someone off that you knew your whole life over one letter? Wouldn’t you insist on an investigation to clear his name or prove his guilt?

EmpressSisi · 23/10/2026 18:55

She could have been the subject of public sympathy here.

If your estranged father becomes embroiled in serious allegations, many people will instinctively feel sympathy for you. You didn't choose your parents, and you're not responsible for their behaviour. A brief statement expressing concern, respecting the investigation and maintaining her distance would have allowed that sympathy to remain focused on her circumstances. She should have stopped after the first paragraph.

But once you start explaining, commenting or making statements that people perceive as contradictory, the conversation changes. Instead of discussing the allegations, people start discussing you. What did you know? When did you know it? Why are you speaking now? And how does this fit with what you said previously?

And I think the biggest mistake is failing to recognise that you don't have to defend yourself against a criticism nobody has actually made yet. By trying to get ahead of the narrative, you can inadvertently introduce questions that might never have gained traction otherwise.

They see criticism as something that must be corrected, rather than accepting that public opinion will never be entirely within their control. They risk responding to the immediate controversy rather than considering the long term consequences. What feels satisfying to say today might be difficult to defend tomorrow. They also underestimate how much their previous public statements shape the interpretation of their current ones. Once people perceive a pattern, every new statement is judged through that lens.

Of course, we can't know their private thinking or whether every public response is their own decision. But the communications problem is clear. When people already scrutinise your every move, you have far less room for error.

And here's the irony: the royal family's approach of saying very little can seem frustrating and evasive, but it also prevents them from creating an endless supply of new material for public debate.

Mylovelygreendress · 23/10/2026 18:51

But she cut him off before the allegations emerged.
She started dating Harry in 2016 and if my memory serves me right she was still posting gushing posts about her Dad . Why on earth didn’t she introduce them then ? Why not before they got engaged or indeed the wedding ? Even when the late Queen and then POW urged her to visit her father ?

Exactly. It's all there, published for all to see. She's claiming now to have cut him off because of these allegations, to "protect her children". That's demonstrably untrue!

AlexandraCarrington · 23/10/2026 18:54

Assuming there was a letter, she should be able to tell the Met when and where she saw it, who was present, who the letter was from - an individual, a govt. agency. There must be some detail to corroborate what she's saying.

But in fairness to her, I don't think she could or should have said anything publicly in or after 2018. Either there was an ongoing investigation, in which case it would have been inappropriate to comment, or they were unsubstantiated allegations, and again it would have been inappropriate to say anything.
