Just finished it and loved it - although i have trouble keeping up with the diplomat-speak and often have no idea what they are actually saying to each other!

It's not just me then!

I feel like there is a lot of sub-text and switching between political and personal/relationship problems that I miss.

I had never watched the Diplomat, but recently got Netflix and starting watching it as a recommended series by some on Telly Addicts.

I hadn't realised a new season was just starting, so have gone from Episode 1 Series 1 through to the last episode of series 4.

Maybe this complete binge watch didn't do the series any favours, but was already finding it a bit samey and in fact as Hal said right at the end, you should have left me.

I thought there on off relationship was just implausible.

And as for the politics - seriously!!!!!!!!

Funnily enough I did think it was almost written as a response to the relentless criticism of the misogyny of the West Wing, so couldn't believe it when Allison Janney and Bradley Whitford both turned up. (She had publicly complained about the West Wing)

Anyhow, although some bits I got a good laugh at, whether meant to or not. And why the Brits had to put up with pushy Yanks have no idea.

If there are any more episodes it will become as ridiculous as Homeland did.

However I did have a soft spot for Stuart.

Sort of sorry as was looking forward for something with a bit of depth.

I don't know why she wasnt upset about Denison. I was REALLY upset 🫪

Ok I loved the first 2 seasons; was just about ok with the third even though it jumped the shark; but my God, this season is so awful. The constant arguments in public and the constant blurring of lines between their private life and public roles is so tedious. I work adjacent to people in these positions- no one behaves like her, ever. And no one in her position would have access to half the information that she does. And it is so insulting to the UK (I’m Irish so I shouldn’t even notice this but I do).

Even more parallels now that Melania has now got involved and secured a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine 🤭

Enjoyed it a lot. It is however getting a bit shark-jumpy.

I thought this about season 3. I wasn’t going to bother with season 4, should I?

Italiangreyhound · Yesterday 22:19

Definitely should!

Ha, intrigued to hear what you thought it meant. Not in a mean way, genuinely find it interesting how people picture different things.

He picked her. He chose her. It was one of the most powerfully romantic gestures of love that I’ve seen in recent times. I love this series. And season 4 didn’t disappoint. The complexity of power, love, marriage, politics, treachery. Bloody marvellous!

Italiangreyhound · Today 01:03

I think it was like jumping the gun, but it is much more specific!

jump the shark

"Jumping the shark" is an idiom used to describe the precise moment a TV show, movie, or creative work exhausts its original premise and introduces a ridiculous, far-fetched plot twist or gimmick in a desperate attempt to stay popular.

Origin of the Phrase

  • The Episode: The phrase comes from a September 20, 1977 episode of the American sitcom Happy Days (Season 5, Episode 3: "Hollywood: Part 3"

I’m an older git, I knew what it meant, I just like hearing how others picture phrases that have become well known. Liked the thread recently that asked what do you think a tromboleese is!

Netflix hasn't yet confirmed a 5th season. They can't leave it on that cliffhanger!

OK, she's not officially a diplomat any more - but I NEED to see how it unfolds! I appreciated the way they were working current issues into the storyline - must be tricky; they have to anticipate what's going to happen without going in too hard and looking stupid if they fall wide of the mark. They'll certainly have a lot to work with on the next season.

They missed the riots in Europe but they did have some unruly demos, so I'll forgive them.

I loved the Leader Of The Free World becoming increasingly, impulsively, dangerously aggressive. And the presidential spouse suddenly taking over diplomatic duties? Prescient!

Just watched the last episode, what a belter!! I loved it.

I felt like I was getting the politics better by the end of the season, I had a few moments where I rewound an earlier episode as I hadnt followed well.

I might have to rewatch some favourite West Wing episodes whilst I await season 5.

What storyline/moment do people see as the jumping the shark moment?
