Handsome, hardworking dresses for the cooler weather.

I'd love to diversify my cool weather wardrobe a little. I'm looking for dresses that hit mid calf or a bit lower but are not full length (this is non-negotiable); I'm a little busty so variations on v necks or bodices with buttons you can unbutton are best. Long sleeves or 3/4 length sleeves; these would be day dresses. Very very strongly prefer a gentle A line that isn't interrupted by a waist seam. Size 14, but tallish with the weight spread reasonably evenly. Autumn/winter weight, please. (I fantasize about the perfect needlecord dress.) Can't wear yellow/orange/brown/lime green/olive drab colours. Strong blues, teal, dark green, dark red, dark purple, and even black especially welcome!
And I'd love to pay less than £150 (per dress, that is!). (Not asking a lot, am I? 🙂) Suggestions?

That sounds like a Labrador 😄

As someone who generally lives in sportswear & jeans, I actually really like the look of those Justine Tabac dresses… shame about the prices but maybe I can find something similar but much cheaper..

I've recently bought the blue Rosina dress. It's beautiful.

The Nobody's Child cord dress I ordered for my daughter in law has arrived. It's blooming gorgeous. Now wrapped up for Christmas.

The checked cord dress is glorious but very expensive… any suggestions for a better value alternative? Thanks

The right style and colour I think? Fabric may not be hard wearing enough and lace frill on collar and neck.

Nice dress though!

@EleanorMc67 It''s a fair cop! I didn't venture into finding a dressmaker and I still wander up and down uttering similar laments. I decided to approach the problem from a somewhat different angle this time round. (And created a vocabulary war by accident.)

I think I know what OP means - a 'handsome' dress in my mind is quite different to a 'pretty' dress. And as the weather cools down I'm also keen on handsome/hard working and warm. Sort of your 'good honest autumn dress with none of those pointless fripperies' vibe.

I agree. A 'pretty' dress sounds more summery.

OP I know exactly the kind of dress you prefer - I bought this and cut the ribbon off the bodice, now it’s great!

I really like this dress in terms of a winter fit and flare shape. But it’s plaid which you aren’t keen on and may also have the waist seam, although I’m not quite sure what you meant by that, as I think this is nicer and less bulky than a shirt style dress pulled in by a belt. I’ll share it in case anyone else likes it!

To finally answer your question . . . I saw many nice dresses here (daren't write handsome) in some delightful colors (I'm really not keen on Big Prints or Plaid), but quite a lot of them did have rather definite waist seams. As you yourself spotted upthread, my ideal dress is one that fits nicely over the bust without over-emphasizing it and then skims elegantly (as opposed to being just plain baggy). Some of the promising non-waisted dresses did alas have rather shapeless bodice areas that had too much fabric under the arms and weren't going to do anything for somebody who has, well, breasts. (It is of course a crazy dream to actually desire dart seams.) And some attractive dresses were barely under the knee--I prefer "long midi" because my ankles are more pleasing than my upper calves. There is somewhere back in the thread a lovely Boden needlecord dress with an adjustable zippered V neckline that I will buy; it has what look like princess seams (be still my heart). Less expensively there was a pretty Monsoon "Saba" dress in a similar cut but not quite such an elegant line.
I am the fussiest woman in the world.

Your mention of princess seams (several times!!) finally made me recollect that we've been here before ...!! And I found the previous thread, from January this year - though on that occasion your precise specification was a dress with princess seams??!!

On re-reading it, I think the outcome was that you were going to get one made, possibly from one of the fab vintage patterns that had been linked? Did you ever bother?

I got sidetracked by the lexical debate! Currently overwhelmed by life, the universe and everything but will check back in later with opinions and more gratitude 😊

So from Hard Times to A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy ...?!!
