Could Mumsnet clarify the purpose of the sex and gender forum?

Can we get some clarification on the actual "purpose" of the sex and gender forum, please?

Many members on there seem to allude to it being for GC people rather than to discuss issues related to gender and sex. They make posts like this one:

"and the overall purpose of the sub forum."

What is this "overall purpose" that some members seem to be privy to and isn't outlined in the group title?

I can show various other posts by regular members who seem sure of the same thing. I think it would help all of us if we understood what the site/staff intended its purpose to be.

Because some members seem to believe it was set up for GC people or allude to some purpose of the board that doesnt seem clear in the description.

So what though? Does it matter if some people have different opinions on this? Nobody is stopping you posting.

Did you look at @Lougle 's post?

Why would they need to do that?

I guess not everyone is comfortable on every board, but the wilds of mumsnet are quite vast.

Justine posted on 15/06/2021 to explain what the purpose of this board is. I think it's fair to say that they underestimated the proportion of MNers who appreciate the content that has been diverted to this board, because this board has 1134 pages of threads, and the Feminism: Chat board has 51 pages of threads. I guess as much as you can own the forum, you can't own the minds of the posters.

Justine said:

"Is Mumsnet hiving gender-critical feminists off into a ghetto? Are we ashamed of them?

Just to be clear, there’s no hiving off of the debate - we intend to streamline the topics in the FWR category from five down to two: one ‘Sex/Gender debate’ topic, and one Feminism Chat topic. This doesn’t mean that every thread mentioning sex or biology will be moved to the ‘Sex/Gender debate’ topic, which would as many of you have pointed out be unworkable and odd. It’s not about pushing gender-critical feminists into a ghetto, but it is about clearly signposting where people can find conversations - between all kinds of feminists - of the ‘what does it mean to be a woman, are trans women women, is trans-inclusive feminism/activism/language impacting on women’ variety, and providing a separate topic without conversations of that kind.

It won’t be news to anyone here that there are feminists who are intersectional/fourth wave/transinclusive/liberal (however you wish to classify them) who say the passion and preponderance of the gender-critical viewpoint in the current Feminism Chat area means they simply don’t engage with the Feminism topic at all (thousands of Mumsnet users have hidden it altogether). To quote one email we received this morning, ‘There is definitely a sense that Feminism Chat is only a place to discuss gender critical feminism. Any posts which question GCism get flooded with hundreds of hostile responses. Which might be more fair if MN was an explicitly GC site, but it portrays itself as a space for all feminism.’"

It's for rehoming troublesome cats.
Thought everyone knew that.

He's beautiful, I'll take him.

KittyWilkinson · 14/09/2026 16:59

It's all just huff and puff. Never anything of substance in these claims. Anyone carrying on these alleged behaviours would be robustly dealt with by moderators.

murasaki · 14/09/2026 16:53

KittyWilkinson · 14/09/2026 16:51

So you've gone from claiming that certain unnamed MN posters "habitually" do these things to a rather weak "we will see" left hanging in the air.

Mm, the list is not forthcoming, is it. And i don't expect to see a raft of deletions based on Lexible 's reports either.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/09/2026 16:52

Lins77 · 14/09/2026 16:49

This is completely pointless. It boils down to "some people, possibly, have different opinions on the exact purpose of a discussion board". So what if they do? No forum member can prevent another forum member from posting whatever they want on any thread they want on any board they want.

Nobody, apart from MN, can prevent Lexi from posting her thoughts and views, indeed she does so extensively.

Exactly.

He's already foisted a troublesome cat on to me.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/09/2026 16:48

If I say that “Mumsnet FWR has been instrumental in the resistance against trans rights activism both in the UK and globally” that’s my opinion, yes, and it gives it a “purpose” in hindsight. But it wasn’t created with that purpose in mind. It’s just a space for people to talk about sex based rights.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/09/2026 16:46

Lexibletheflexible · 14/09/2026 16:42

And then the users that belueve otherwise and allude to this purpose can come and explain what they meant.

Or they might not.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/09/2026 16:44

If someone actually tells you you aren’t allowed to post on a thread, like <checks notes> you have today to other posters twice, in the middle of whinging about that very thing, that’s probably in breach of talk guidelines and you should report them @Lexibletheflexible

murasaki · 14/09/2026 16:42

Probably because they don't say that

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/09/2026 16:42

Well posts like the one you quoted are just a matter of opinion, if they aren’t abusing anyone, what exactly is the problem?

Lexibletheflexible · 14/09/2026 16:42

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/09/2026 16:40

To be honest I assume they’ll just post to clarify that there is no “purpose” other than to be a talk board topic and to report any breaches of guidelines.

And then the users that belueve otherwise and allude to this purpose can come and explain what they meant.

That’s not how it works, you need to report individual posts at the time rather than harass other users on TAAT threads.

Oh I will report them now
Some I have reported and they haven't been removed despite saying that the forum is for GC users and the perpetuation of their views

It would seem that explaining a quite clear board title to the OP isn't terribly high up MN's priority list.

Tough. It is in site Stuff because clarification is needed so I have to post the comments I am talking about

SwirlyGates · 14/09/2026 16:36

I'd say it's for debate. However, in all the time I've been on there, we haven't heard many good arguments in favour of trans ideology, and I for one haven't seen any at all that give me a moment's thought in favour of treating trans-identifying men as women, or giving them access to women-only facilities.

There have been one or two trans posters whose contributions are valuable and enlightening, but these are the rare ones who acknowledge our own experiences and points of view.

Lexibletheflexible · 14/09/2026 16:36

KittyWilkinson · 14/09/2026 16:10

They don't. Anyone doing that "habitually" as you claim would be challenged by the moderation team.
Pure invention.

We will see
