If a secondary school principal said (in a principal talk to parents at an open day event) that if you and your children are not prepared to co-operate with the school’s policies and behaviour expectations that you shouldn’t apply to the school?

@clary To qualify that - about the wotk being set. Working in pairs and threes. Yes, conversation is normal in schools that trust dc. I’m not talking about lesson disruption but having a chat before the lesson starts and conversing with a teacher is fairly normal. Sitting is silence is like a prison! There’s middle ground isn’t there?

This thread is about obeying the school rules though. No one has said that one of those rules is silence at all times?

But conversation in a lesson when the teacher is talking is against the rules in any school I know. That’s the kind of disruption people are concerned about - and which many DC with SEN will hate. That’s all we are saying. I think that’s pretty reasonable tbh.

DD1 school said something similar. As a result I was expecting her school to be professional and follow their own policies. Oh, how naive I was.

@clary Most schools I’ve visited do have dc listening to the teacher! But there’s chat before the lesson and during set tasks. Lessons tend to be a mix of collaborative working and the teacher delivering a lesson but even then there’s interaction with dc in the best schools to check learning. I might have assumed too much here but a child thst worry about ties and blazers often miss the big picture regarding quality of education. New heads love the idea that a tidy child is a well taught and happy child. My DDs thrived with some conversation allowed at appropriate times and were not continually harassed about uniform. The best teachers were 100% respected.
