Looking forward to continuing the journey together

It is definitely a first choice for us but those targeting more academic schools tend to apply as back up.

Rjikks · 09/02/2023 13:06

Thanks for info on Reeds. That's shocking - they must seriously over offer then. In our prep they offered 35 boys and only 2 accepted. (2 years ago, the covid year).

PreplexJ · 09/02/2023 13:03

General speaking after the school offer holder days and national offer day on 1st March, there will be a lot of movement on WL (both private and grammar) from the second week of March all the way until the summer.

GU24Mum · 09/02/2023 13:01

@Rjikks - my son got the Reed's WL too not that many years ago. He was No 2 on the WL but they said they hadn't gone to the WL in 3 years. That was all pre-Covid and higher birth rate years though. Good luck.

I’m sorry to hear those on WL @Taurus23 we just need to not lose hope. I can’t concentrate and feel so sick with worry in telling my daughter the not so good news. I pray for everyone tomorrow and our children will at least have somewhere to go come September. Thank you @DadNotAMum1971 for your insight hopefully it is positive for us all.

I am sorry to hear this. The stress and anxiety is not good. One thing I noticed, is dc kind of look to you for your reaction. For example, if you act excited about the option you have, it might get your dd excited. I am not sure if you have one offer yet, but if not, hopefully by tomorrow. Could you delay until tomorrow when you know if you might get more options?

Anyone heard from Hampton yet?

Hampton have said it will be tomorrow.

We are in the bottom third of the WL at Reeds. My eldest got a WL offer at Wimbledon High so I know they move - but this is 13+ not 11+.

Does anyone know how things panned out for Reeds last year - did they make lots of WL offers?

I know that 2 years ago they massively over offered and last year they were more cautious.

Hi Mumsnet 11+ crew, I feel for you all with the nerves this week. Thankfully it's behind us as my DS was a 2021 applicant. All our outcomes (we only did 3 plus one non-selective state school) came on the equivalent of this Friday, and the first email to arrive was a (cold as ice) straight 'no' from St Paul's - a shock after 3 rounds including what seemed like an impressive group interview performance (remember these were all online during Covid so we got rapid feedback from our son). Thankfully the other two (KCS, his first choice, and LU) were both positive shortly after so we could breathe a sigh of relief. SPS was only our third choice (maybe even fourth after a local state option as opinions diverged on SPS).

If it helps for those thinking about Wait List movement timings (from our sample of one), we let our son's school know the outcome ASAP - can't remember if it was the following Monday or the week after, as half term followed immediately. So the offer to continue at the same Prep into secondary was declined soon after the results, and we informed KCS and LU right after the offer holders events, c.23&24 Feb, from memory. The state option came through in early March but it was never a genuine consideration post the KCS offer (wasn't one of the really academic ones), so that may have been released the same day to some hopefully happy family.

Our experience suggests that little movement happens in the first couple of weeks but it should start moving thereafter. We know of one DS that got into KCS via the WL. As some have stated Everyone's Invited may have been a factor, plus perhaps fewer Overseas candidates during the pandemic.

Remember the schools will be trying to get their own acceptance lists squared off with children who really want to be at a particular school and kids can only take one place (even with our relatively small number of applications we had turned down 3 out of 4 offers by early March), so I echo what has been said earlier, engage with the current schools Future Schools team (if there is one) to reiterate strong First Choice preferences from WL, and similarly with the secondary school admissions team. A nice call with a consistent message every couple of weeks will have you front of mind if a space comes up, even during the summer (this approach worked for us in relation to our DS prep school place in year 1). It's a volatile time economically, some kids start but don't settle and end up moving on, and international families leave London all the time. If your child is broadly at the right academic level, a place will almost certainly come through eventually, even once the school year is underway. It's a volatile time economically, some kids start but don't settle in and end up moving on, and international families leave London all the time. If your child is broadly at the right academic level, a place will almost certainly come through eventually, even once the school year is underway if you still want it.

Hopefully a long but useful thread during a nerve-wracking time. Very best of luck in the next few days and weeks!

Rjikks · 09/02/2023 12:11

St Georges are posting today, so results expected tomorrow.

SamPoodle123 · 09/02/2023 12:10

Congratulations on the offers received today. And to the ones that got WL or a no, sometimes it is a blessing in disguise. When one door closes, another opens. Also, as some people say WLs can move :)

Good luck to everyone still waiting. I am anxiously waiting for tomorrow!

Gumps · 09/02/2023 12:07

Did I imagine it or did someone say they heard from St George’s today? Nothing in the post here.
Emailed LEH and the registrar said call for a chat. Such a lovely lady and very helpful.

Already done :) I only live round the corner so I might go and camp outside!

Lol hahaha Good luck!!! 😗

Taurus23 · 09/02/2023 11:56

@Running247 Sending all positive vibes your way so you don’t any reminding. Just celebrating!

Running247 · 09/02/2023 11:50

@Taurus23

Tomorrow is the big day for my DD in terms of outcomes so I’ll be leaning on this forum a lot! Please do remind me about what I said about WL if it comes to it LOL!!!

Taurus23 · 09/02/2023 11:46

@woohooho @Drfosters thank you for the supportive comments. Xx

Taurus23 · 09/02/2023 11:43

@Running247 thank you so much. I found this forum such a help to vent my real feelings as feel embarrassed to say my thoughts in ‘real’ life as there really is bigger stuff out there to worry about. We are super lucky to have Surbiton and do really love the school.

I genuinely am delighted with Surbiton but I know my DD’s is a bit disappointed with not getting the offers her friends are.

I suppose we all have to witness our children go though rejection at some point and just be there to build them up.

woohooho · 09/02/2023 11:42

Taurus23 · 09/02/2023 11:21

Feeling a bit despondent tbh. After Putney and LEH waitlist think it’s highly unlikely we will get WHS or Tiffins.

@Gumps I will call for feedback later today.

I know I need to get a grip as we do have Surbiton but still feel a bit sad to let her down.

We do really like Surbiton. I suppose it’s just not nice to get a no….

Don't feel despondent- WL do move and quite possible to get WHS and not PHS and vice versa. Friend's daughter got Putney and didn't get Surbiton ( wanted Surbiton) so it's not clear cut at all.
Good luck all!

It is stressful. You are me a few years ago now but without any offers at all ( we did a lot and she passed all the exams but clearly failed ant interview) and 2 waitlists. All my DD’s friends who applied (about 15 in the year as state primary) got offers and for one close friend they just kept rolling in. My daughter was actually far more mature than me and very pragmatic about it. I did lobby both the waitlist schools and as it happened she was very close to top of one and it came though and she’s thriving. Everything all does work out in the end one way or another so keep faith wherever your DD ends up she’ll be very happy.

Running247 · 09/02/2023 11:38

P.S. I’d like to comment that this is my first ‘involved’ experience on MN and whilst the vast majority of the posters have been hugely supportive of each other, I have found the posts of 1 or 2 regular posters quite astounding and ridiculous. They really mustn’t have anything better to do.

Running247 · 09/02/2023 11:33

@Taurus23

I’m sending you supportive vibes across the ether, please don’t be despondent. You have an offer in the bag and the WL WILL move.

WLs don’t mean no - not as nice as an offer I know, but your DD DID through the selection criteria. You did not let her down in any way.

Still WH to go and then Tiffin. Great thing about Tiffin is that it’s a completely separate process so everything to play for.

GQ22 · 09/02/2023 11:25

@drizzledon definitely agree the experience is dependent on the individual school! I'd argue that's for private too, difference is you get choice.

And I can't look at the final figures we pay for our children too much, I need to be able to sleep at night 😂

PreplexJ · 09/02/2023 11:24

Prep schools by definition are to prepare children for entrance exams to selective secondary schools that admit students based on the results of the 11+ (or 13+) exams.

State primary schools do not prepare children for any entrance exam. The teacher in state school focus on SAT preparation , with specific emphasis on leveling up those less academic students, who won't typically do 11+.

In state school, it is the parents and DCs who wants take part in 11+ exam do the preparation outside school curriculum and school times. With the same entrance exam and same selection criteria for both prep and state school students. I can't see why state school students admitted to grammar or private selective school will fall behind in levels of maths or English compared to prep school students.

However, I do hear some cases in through private school, the junior school student who don't have to participate in 11+ exam have some catch up work to do in year 7 compared to the cohort that entered via 11+ process.

GQ22 · 09/02/2023 11:22

@Pleasegrowmore that was the straw that broke the camels back for us really. Midway through Y4 we were thinking about secondary schools and tutoring, were finding that the stuff DS was getting from school (during lockdown) was way below what he could actually do. We asked our teacher what we could do and he effectively said there are no options, no routes, the school will not support DS and will not even give a report to a private secondary. It wasn't malicious, it's just that they didn't have resources for it.
