15 days, 15 hours until 9am on the 23rd.

(I just looked it up)

That's not much, is it? I think I won't point it out to DS.

Congratulations to DC who have gained jobs - I've seriously impressed at their motivation and maturity! DD seems to have regressed this holiday - discovered a bit of relaxation and decided it is far superior to the alternative (despite pre-A Level work to be done). What can I say, she's 'all or nothing'!

Only a week until first results for her...

cubscout · 07/08/2018 17:49

I'm very definitely in the 'congratulate all' camp - actually I think those kids that work really hard need more congrats sometimes thatn those for whom it is fairly effortless.

neither am I predicting ds results. The school have to make predictions but really I don't think any of us know anything about grade boundaries! And 97% for a 9 in geog seems a bit harsh - particularly as the papers were quite hard.

Ds applying for masses of jobs but no luck yet - he's quite despondent. It's the real world though and perhaps an important lesson to learn. he's not really seeing much of his 'friends' though - they always seem busy :(

It all seems quite close now....

Oratory1 Well done to your DS on getting a job ...I need to get DD back in work mode she's had the summer off.

I jotted down what grades I thought DD would get shortly after the exams but TBH I dont have a clue other than I think she would be disappointed with she didnt get an A* in Physics and pass both History & French. The only exam I was fairly confident she would do well in is DT because she had already done 60% of the exam but the written exam paper was different to any others they had sat so even that grade is not easy to predict

DD is away with NCS not sure how its going but I'm guessing OK given I have not heard from her ...I thought after I dropped her off how brave she was going to spend 4 nights with a whole group of DC's she didnt know and had only briefly met them once for a couple of hours on the induction.

Kingscote - I would definitely opt for the sandcastle building.

Glad your friends DC's got good results mmzz.

Stickerrocks · 07/08/2018 13:23

hmc Yay, you're back!

I keep saying "we" and "our results" too. They're not mine, they're hers! Whatever I say on 23rd, it's bound to be wrong. Congratulating other people is so much easier (well done mmzz's Scottish lot.)

mmzz · 07/08/2018 12:41

slinkyme she doesn't even have to get up... she can do it lying in bed on her phone. All she needs to do is open her eyes and hold the phone.

We get not got

slinkyme · 07/08/2018 11:25

Great news mmzz.

Seen the results thread on scotsnet and I can imagine we will all be going through the same emotions in couple of weeks time.

We got our first set of results on 14th morning and we will be away in a hotel - have to remind DD to take her log in details with her so she can check - not sure if she will agree to getting up at 6 but we have an early start so shouldn't be much later.

hmcAsWas · 07/08/2018 11:18

Or not sleep at all Loose - eek!

LooseAtTheSeams · 07/08/2018 11:15

mmzz hurray! Glad to hear it!
Kingscote complicated sandcastles sound like a good plan. Or earplugs?!
hmc welcome back! It's the night before the results that I'm not looking forward to - I know I won't sleep well!

KingscoteStaff · 07/08/2018 11:02

Hooray! No diplomacy needed!

Please send all unneeded diplomacy to me as I start my week’s holiday with one Marxist and one Libertarian family. I’m hoping they will meet up at the extremist end of their beliefs.

Either that, or I am going to have to spend a lot of time building large and complicated sandcastles with the little ones... (Garden spade packed ready in boot of car)

hmcAsWas · 07/08/2018 11:00

Morning. I haven't posted since thread 12 or 13 I think... Just needed a break from thinking about GCSE's and possible results. Now with just a couple of weeks to go before 'the reckoning' I'm ready to get back into the mindset!

How is everyone?

JufusMum · 07/08/2018 10:45

Good news mmzz!

BlueBelle123 · 07/08/2018 10:42

That is good news Smile

mmzz · 07/08/2018 10:30

They've both done well. What a relief!

Sometimes resits later on are a good thing. I have mature students who sailed through levels 1 and 2 on functional skills this year and built up their confidence in English. They are coming back to start GCSE in September! In some cases they already have interesting jobs but are now ready to progress further. One student does amazing work with young people on social issues but is looking ahead to training as a teacher, for example.

mmzz · 07/08/2018 09:39

Bluebelle not really, because they don't have sixth form colleges, everyone just stays on at school and does Highers, if they get a B+ in the subject today.
Otherwise you stay on at school and do the GCSE equivalent exams (NAT5s) next year if you either failed today or weren't up to taking them first time around.

sandgrown · 07/08/2018 09:31

I will congratulate him whatever happens.I was so pleased that he did well in his first adult interview because he used to suffer with a real lack of confidence. College have confirmed he can resit maths and English with them if necessary.

BlueBelle123 · 07/08/2018 09:15

For the DC that isn't expected to do well, can you not congratulate them on their next step, ie getting on the course or into college?

Don't talk to me about families I also have a DN expecting GCSE results as well!!

mmzz · 07/08/2018 09:07

The DC's parent can be a given to taking offence. It is a sensitive subject for them. That's what's making me nervous to say the right thing. I have to strike the right, positive tone. Not say anything that comes across as patronising.

Families... they are a minefield sometimes!

Thanks so much for that loose that confirms what i thought. So even after a levels it may be necessary to have the 4 in language as this could be an entry requirement for an apprenticeship type job after a level. He improved so much in exam technique I think he would be ok in a retake it would just take so much time out of year 12 and he would hate it x I won’t worry about that til the 23 rs but useful to have the facts before hand.

On a more positive note DS has also got his first job 😀 20 hours a week til he goes back to school. The days of spending all week in his pyjamas on his lap top are gone. It was his choice though and he seems excited about it. and will be able to go back in other holidays if he doesn’t mess it up too much. So glad the till works out the change etc too !!!!

speedyhedgehog · 07/08/2018 08:58

I've been lurking on here but it finally seems real - and close! now with results coming in. My dd was predicted very good grades then suffered a serious injury before Christmas that meant she missed a lot of school. She didn't go back full time until after Easter. I've been trying really hard to manage her expectations and to focus her on what she needs not what they predicted for her. I just hope as many kids as possible end up happy with what they have achieved because there seems to be a lot more pressure than when I did mine back in the dark ages!

Stickerrocks · 07/08/2018 08:56

I sent my DN who failed every single GCSE 3 years ago a congratulations on all your hard work card. I also send a card to my other DN who is still struggling to get his maths. Recognise the effort, not the grade! It's heartbreaking if everyone around you is getting praise, as you feel like an even greater failure.

LooseAtTheSeams · 07/08/2018 08:45

Agree with congratulate everyone. Effort is what matters!
On English resits, there's a difference between meeting govt conditions for funding a student post-16 and what you need in reality. So you can theoretically pass literature and get a 3 in language and not have to retake. However, the entry requirement for further/higher ed courses and many jobs will be Language, not literature. So if you get a 3 in language you should retake even though technically you could progress to a post-gcse course.
However, if you get a 4 but want to re-sit to get a higher grade, this isn't funded, so you'll be asked to pay the exam fees.

mmzz · 07/08/2018 08:41

Bluebelle, Linerunner and "goodbyestranger* it sounds like the advice to congratulate both is unanimous then! I really hope they both do well, but only passing a couple is a distinct possibility for one of them - unless the system has changed in Scotland and a D is no longer a fail?
I just looked on Studentroom and the Scottish results are out now. One DC is saying that at the equivalent of the end of year 12, they've got 192 UCAS points! That would be 3xA* and D at A level in England when everyone else is just doing AS levels! There are some seriously bright pupils out there!
