Did anyone watch her on bbc question time? She was spouting so much hatred. She is trying to rip apart this country. Divide and conquer. Honestly it’s really upsetting. I hate that our young people are watching this play out.

OP posts:

Worth remembering that this over the top hatred for politicians can have disastrous consequences. Ann Widdicombe being the most recent example.

I can't stand the woman and her mission is to stoke hatred.

However, I know many people who would rather identify as British than English, because they feel that the term “English” carries certain cultural associations that they simply don’t feel represented by.

I agree with this. Feeling British is somehow quite different to feeling English.

What a nasty thing to call someone OP. I think you need to get a grip . Axel Rudakubana is a disgrace to humanity not a politician with whom you disagree.

Yep.

I consider myself ethnically English. I come from a rural English village and am related to those in most of the graves going back a thousand years. That's a fact evidenced by the parish records. I can't change that, nor do I want to.

Children who are adopted can feel cut off from their heritage, and describe not knowing who they are. The authorities go to great lengths to place children with families of similar heritage, to prevent that disconnect. Adopted children can trace their birth families for exactly this reason.

People need to know their own heritage. That doesn't change what is on their passports or what they are entitled to. I can't bear SB but I don't see an issue with acknowledging ethnicity.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. There is no English ethnicity, we are a nation of immigrants and our language is German. We aren't even indigenous to these bloomin Islands for goodness sake!

Our language is Germanic, not German. Swedish and Dutch are Germanic languags, do you call those languages German too? English people have a large portion of indigenous Briton ancestry, followed by ancestry from the various Anglo-Saxon tribes. So yes we are a mixture, like most people around the world. It is this mixture that makes us English. I think it's disgenuous to say there isn't an English Ethnicity when you could day thay about every Ethnicity. The Scottish too for example are very mixed in their ancestry.

Because @Twiglets1 what she said wasn’t highlighting enough that it’s purely down to the individual’s choice and that is simply how she happens to feel and others, just like her, can and may feel completely different.

In your opinion.

I think it's obviously down to individual choice how we identity. And that point doesn't have to be laboured every time someone (even a politician) says anything about their own identity.

She doesn't identify as English, does identify as British & Asian. Others might disagree with her assessment but that is how she feels. It's up to her and certainly doesn't make her a "disgrace to humanity" for saying it.

Pallaska · 08/10/2026 07:11

Hmmmmm, I'm not sure it makes sense to pretend white people don't have a race if we're discussing race.

I wish race didn't matter - I think it's a mistake, really, but it does have social impact. We should listen to what people think, including Suella, who is English too, if not ethnically so. Even if we feel awful about what she thinks.

I'm English. I was born here. My skin is white. I wouldn't necessarily describe myself as ethnically English because my ancestors were from a large mix of other countries. I'm not Anglo Saxon. That's normal - that's a part of the history and culture of my country, England, and its "seafaring" ways. That history is written into my DNA and I will write it into the ethnicity of England, over time. We all will. We will change the ethnicity of the English generationally, over aeons. We definitely all own the future, but for this we must also acknowledge and inherit the past.

In my opinion she’s an utter cunt. But what intrigues me is why she’s demonising immigrants so much when she is second generation, does she not realise once those who haven’t been born here are repatriated it’ll be her next if her party gained power?

I really get anyone with her background pushing these messages, it’s bizarre.

I think her take is not demonising immigrants who arrive in the same way her parents did. Controlled numbers and more effective cultural integration.

I think she's just generally a hateful person. She seems aggressive and always ready to argue and sneer.

Also someone who when in government failed a simple basic rule about sharing documents. So potentially compromising security.

I hope someone who loses their seat at the next general election.

Well she is. Amd not especially competent, remembering her role in a previous Tory government. She was rightly sacked by Sunak for stoking tensions.

“Stoking tensions” aka objecting to the Boris wave which we now all agree (well, most sensible people) was madness.

Twiglets1 · 08/10/2026 06:45

Why should she keep her feelings to herself @Araminta1004 when other politicians don't.

If they all kept personal opinions out of politics then you would have a point.

Araminta1004 · 08/10/2026 06:42

Because she is overstepping and it’s about personal choice. As she is a politician she should keep her personal choice and feelings to herself!
If someone has British nationality that is all that matters. They can feel English or Scottish or Welsh or NI (or more than one of those) and if their grandparent was born in eg Jamaica, they can if they want to also feel ties there. It’s their choice, not for someone in power to tell them. Also with ethnicity questionnaires you can insert „prefer not to say“. That is people‘s choice.
Same with dual nationals, English law doesn’t recognise them to be lesser than those who only have the British passport.
The world is increasingly global and mixed. And dinosaurs from the last century obsessing about national identity and nation states and ethnicity and how many generations of it, it’s regressive. She needs to look forward as a politician not backward. It’s completely irrelevant if I can trace my roots back one generation or to Norman times. It’s all just time periods. And it’s about my personal identity it has nothing to do with the State!

Twiglets1 · 08/10/2026 06:33

I'm English and that's my identity.

I don't really care who else considers themselves English or why. Of course English people have our identity and history. As do the Scottish, Welsh, Irish etc.

We're also all British who qualify for a British passport.

Charley50 · 08/10/2026 06:22

Why are the indigenous English being denied their history and identity? If you are half English, half from another ethnicity, it’s completely obvious how distinct different groups are, in so many ways; humour, history, food, language, acceptable behaviour, cultural norms, what is thought of as important, genealogy, even diseases. Most people I know who are born in England but have parents from another country, feel very strong links to that country, often calling it ‘home’ ‘the motherland’ etc. They often feel closer emotional bonds to that country than they do to England. They can live in that country very easily. They call themselves proudly Greek, Jamaican, Iranian, Italian, because that’s the culture they’ve been brought up in at home as it’s their ethnicity . Why can’t the English have that?

twolattes · 08/10/2026 06:02

She’s horrendous - what level of safe hate must that woman have

Twiglets1 · 08/10/2026 05:58

SharonEllis · 08/10/2026 05:49

I think the tendency to call someone you disagree with 'a disgrace to humanity' is the sort of hyperbole that is undermining our political system and social cohesion. I cant stand the woman but she's not a disgrace to humanity.

Yes it is hyperbole.

Call her a bad politician if you want but a "disgrace to humanity"?

That's over the top and a bit ironic considering OP is arguing against spouting hatred.

mumumental · 08/10/2026 05:53

I am not arguing that ethnicity doesn't exist, simply that English as an ethnicity does not exist. Because there is no such 'ethnicity'. Unlike Indian or Chinese which is a distinctive ethnicity, English should be thought of as more of a civic identity, if you feel like you are English and you ascribe to core English values like tolerance, religious freedom and the rule of law then your English as far as I am concerned.

The idea that English ethnicity does not exist because we are a nation of immigrants, but Indian ethnicity does exist is confusing to me.

Indians themselves don't even agree on whether north and south indians are the same ethnicity. Waves of immigration have come from Iran, steppe pastoralists, tibeto-burmese people. Haplogroups are less consistent among Indians than among white British people.

This seems remarkably similar to England's history of conquest of conquerors and mass migration inflow.
