There was SO many conservative hate threads when they were incumbent and yet now if someone says they hate Labour it’s a show stopper!

I cannot stand their politicians. I cannot stand that they are weak and frightened of staying facts and truths because their back benchers will be angry and their most extreme constituents will start shouting. I can’t stand any of the left wing politicians who enjoy capitalist lifestyles including having second homes and being landlords but they literally can’t say it. They fall over their words on live TV, obfuscate and change the subject. The champagne socialism sticks in my craw. Just admit that you are part of the dirty game of materialism, you’re putting yourself and your family first always - like everyone else, and your kids are in excellent schools, you live in leafy suburbs, but your privilege sits uncomfortably with your (mostly) white guilt so you soothe it by siphoning money off towards those you pity.

Its the sycophancy alongside the hypocrisy that makes me want to barf.

Who obfusticates about being a landlord?

Who obfusticates about being a landlord?

I’ve just looked up the recent interview I was remembering and it’s Green Party co-deputy leader Rachel Millward. She refused to answer on BBC Politics Live whether she was a landlord while defending co-deputy leader Mothin Ali's rental properties.

Background and Context

  • The Interivew: While appearing on the BBC to defend Mothin Ali—who was revealed to own two rental properties in Leeds through a company—Millward repeatedly declined to comment on her own personal housing circumstances.
  • Party Policy: The controversy follows the Green Party's adoption of a policy calling for the "effective abolition of private landlordism and the private rented sector".
  • Revelations: Subsequent reports revealed that Millward earns money letting rooms in her family home as a lodger arrangement, which government guidance classifies under the definition of a landlord, though the party initially stated she was not a landlord and that only her husband owned a separate rented flat.

I did look up whether there were similar Labour politicians pretending to be champions of the ordinary working people, whilst simultaneously earning a wedge passively through property acquisition and it will not surprise you to know that there indeed was.

So, you have found a Green MP who obfusticated, and some Labour MPs who are landlords, and you've cobbled the two together to claim Labour MPs obfusticate about being landlords? That's a bit weak, no?
I completely agree with your damning inditement of landlords BTW. Surprised to hear this from a right leaning person.

Politicians of all parties are secretive about their personal wealth - I think there should be greater transparency across the board.

She should have just been direct and said 'I currently earn money from this but am willing to give it up if there is a law change.'

The Green Party person will be equally affected by any change in law, and are willing to give that income up.

A lot of what is badged hypocrisy is really just not stating directly.

The joy of being right leaning is we can have individual thought and don’t have to sheep along with all our tribe mates for fear of being cancelled and ostracised. It’s wonderful.

Well of course she couldn’t say that! She is part of a political movement that doesn’t allow for it.

True.

We have the liberty to agree with some policies and disagree with others. I dont have some blue haired harpee screaming at me to fall in line or be doxxed.

A lot of it is just media inexperience.

Ultimately the policy about private landlords can be floated and the electorate can judge it for themselves.

Yeah of course. That damn media inexperience thing. Makes you lose all power of speech.

Well yes it actually does! Have you ever met any humans??

Politicians when starting out are not great, getting used to media takes time.

It takes a lot of training and even then some stay rubbish for their whole careers!

concertinacornflake · 15/09/2026 10:59

The Greens in particular need training as they've gone from nowhere to winning by elections very quickly. Hannah Spencer had a baptism of fire.

The more the two-party system breaks down, the more work there will be for media trainers.

Have I ever met any humans? What a sensible question. If you are representative of life in earth I’ll give it a swerve.

It was not a serious question obviously, but politicians from all parties are people.

Their supporters are also people. Not sheep, not harpies.

The human side of politics is really important. We've all got to live in this country together whoever wins next time.

Each individual has to tick the box on political donations.

It's not 1970.

I think it's disrespectful to say union members are too stupid to understand. They get multiple communications about the links between union and politics.

It's not some conspiracy only you understand.

I agree it would be disrespectful to say that union members are too stupid to understand but since I didn't say anything of the sort it's weird that you would bring that into it. Perhaps try with an actual argument next time rather than a strawman.

Such an odd take. Some people of any political leaning are prone to tribalism. There’s factions on the left just as there are on the right.

A bit stupid of the Greens to put someone up whose life clashes with such a policy. A couple of years ago Labour had more landlord MPs than any other party. Personally I don’t see the issue provided they are upfront about it and we have decent regulation that roots out the crappy landlords. The ones who try to hide it are missing a trick, they should use themselves as an example of a good landlord providing safe and decent housing for a fair rent.

I think if people vote on principle and dislike the underhand, Reform have given far more to linger in the mind. Objectively speaking.
Regardless, as the survey posted earlier in the thread showed, the vast majority of people support the cap.
The majority of people also do not want a Reform government, so I think Labour have little reputational damage to worry about here.
If you support Reform and/or hate Labour it can be hard to see beyond your own opinion, but the surveys are useful for getting the wider view from outside your bubble.

Yes, and we were told that the majority of people don"t want Brexit, and the majority of people in Scotland want Independence etc. etc. What counts is the actual vote, last test for Reform was the council elections (that Labour tried to ban) next one is the GE.

I interpreted what you said about union members not supporting Labour as you meaning they were not happy for their donation to go to Labour.

But now it appears we agree - union members choose to make the political donations so they are individual donations.

A party winning by elections and splitting the left wing vote as the Greens are currently are worth discussion.

The Greens have been polling anywhere between 8% and 14% recently.

I just looked that up and it doesn’t sound good (allegedly.). If they were only able to get funding from somewhere, they might be able to invest in attracting more professional councillors. Maybe the unions might come forward to help out.
