Polls are just a snapshot of how the electorate is feeling at a particular point in time, not a prediction of the outcome of a future GE.

So, why do some people get excited about them?

I will never be convinced that a sample of 2000 can be extrapolated to forecast how 48 million people will vote.

I would suggest the reason they havent fallen more quickly is simply because - beyond tinkering with bus fares - he hasn’t actually done anything.

That might change post-budget….

Everyone moaning but they don't know what they are moaning about. The cost of living has nothing to do with Labour or the last Tory government....it's down to Trump and two wars he promised to stop two years ago.

Much of what is happening is out of our control. But what is different is Labours approach to healthcare and public services and education.... they are spending money and they are helping the worst off.

Two years in power isn't enough to reverse twenty years of Tory rule....and if you think unleashing Farage will fix the NHS...you will find there is no NHS and you'll be paying 400 a month to fund private healthcare

Thank God they’re here to help us understand the importance of the latter and the incompetence of the former. Real public service by a person who… checks notes… left the country to avoid paying taxes they didn’t agree with but hopes to come back when those taxes no longer apply.

That doesn't mean the general movement in the polls can be discounted. Polls are important. That's why Reform secretly bought some and those polls were trumpeted in the rw media

Politics doesn’t operate in a vacuum - inevitably, vibes have to survive contact with hard data, news flow, and, you know, reality.

That its pretty much relentlessly bad news for Labour, is just the way the cookie crumbles.

Which is why Farage is attempting to push the notion of a spring '27 election. He knows Reform's days are numbered, £72m or no £72m.

The latest date of the next general election is 15 August 2026. So, why not tell people now that on that date the composition of parliament will be decided by what polls say on that date and there will be no need to go to the polling station as before?

News flow is obviously a big marker for you, especially being out of the country and with a strong vested interest in seeing this government fail. But it’s not the best metric, unless you’re catholic with you’re reading (which your references suggest you’re not).

Politicians come and go, so I’m not as invested in any of them as you seem to be. Real change (good and bad) is made by people who don’t appear in the news cycle and regardless of who’s in number 10. More devolved powers makes that more doable, and I see some opportunities to improve communities in that agenda. It seems that you’re more focused on your own finances, so doubtless that won’t interest you. But wanging on about Burnham’s every move surely doesn’t serve you?
