I bought a white coat in the sales to look like Olivia Pope, but I actually resemble a middle aged taekwando instructor

Genuinely crying at hissing did and solidly built todler GrinGrinGrin. Thanks for brightening up my day OP.

chachachanges · 17/01/2021 11:44

Your title made me laugh so loudly. Kudos OP

Cocolapew · 17/01/2021 11:44

These are hilariousGrin
In the summer I wore a white linen shirt with wide leg, cropped black linen trousers. I thought I look cool and sophisticated.
DH thought I looked like I was off to work in a paddy field.

As a tween a million years ago I had spinal surgery this involved wearing a plaster cast vest for 9 months which obviously couldn't be taken off. I had instant shoulder pads which was OK in the 80s. All this was fine until some bright spark bought me a white fake fur coat from Tammy Girl. I looked like the Honey Monster and Foxes polar bear had a love child.

FineWhiteBread · 17/01/2021 11:40

A few years ago, when leather waistcoats briefly came back into fashion, I bought one and teamed it with blue jeans and a bell-sleeved white blouse with a pussy bow collar.

Got to the pub and my friends spent the night lining-up Meatloaf songs on the jukebox Blush

twointhemorning · 17/01/2021 11:38

I once bought, what I thought was, a lovely pale blue wrap blouse. I showed my mother who said I looked like a dentist...

AintOverUntilTheCatLadySings · 17/01/2021 11:37

I bought a black, velvet, long bodycon dress to wear to a work party.

I'd hoped to look like a slinky, glam Mortician Adams femme fatale.

Instead, I looked like a pudgy gothic caterpillar or an upholstered sausage.

DareDevil223 · 17/01/2021 11:31

With all the nastiness and Covid obsession this thread has been a joy and reminded me of the "expectation versus reality" thread - my all time favourite (Suzi Quatro's fat nan, bloody hell it's Colonel Gadaffi! etc)

There are some very funny ones but a solidly built toddler who's been dressed by their father genuinely made me laugh out loud.

FunnyItWorkedLastTime · 17/01/2021 11:30

For the benefit of the uninitiated, this is what the OP thought she’d look like. www.thecut.com/2018/04/olivia-pope-best-white-outfits-hats-dresses-coats.html

And this another link to the Suzi Quatro’s Fat Nan thread in case you missed it.

Henry VIII in a wedding dress!Grin Inspector Gadget! Toddler dressed by their Dad! Grin this is such a funny thread!

LucyLime · 17/01/2021 11:24

I bought an amazing leather aviator jacket recently.

My husband took one look at me and asked me where the Audi Quattro was. Apparently it makes me look like Gene Hunt

Evenstar · 17/01/2021 11:24

@500BusStops I feel your pain. I went to see the musical Wicked wearing a green coat the same colour as the witch’s face. This was quite unintentional as I had never seen it. An actual super fan in full fancy dress with green face paint tapped me on the arm in the interval to say she loved the coat and ask where it was from 😳

IceIceCoffee · 17/01/2021 11:23

My baby has a yellow sleep suit with light pink spots , I love it but after reading this I’ve looked with a more critical eye and she looks like mr blobby

FlaviaAlbiaWantsLangClegBack · 17/01/2021 11:20

I remember going shopping for an outfit for my first job in an office. I bought a matching top and trousers in an greeny color thinking that I look smart and professional. I looked like Mao Tse-tung in a blonde wig.

I've come to accept that with a short and stocky build, many clothes have the gift for making me look like I've just freshly stepped off the jobs they were (in some cases vaguely) derived from.

I don't know why my school careers advisor didn't notice this and suggest I became a plumber, lumberjack or mechanic.

MutteringDarkly · 17/01/2021 11:19

The weeble going to a funeral, and the shaved bear have had me wheezing with delight Grin Also an honourable mention to the "actual clown suit" owner planning to add a pair of their DH's shoes and style it out.

I had some yellow trousers as a teen, that I once blithely wore with red shoes and my coat that was brown. Person at the bus stop said I looked like the sauces pictured on the wimpy menu. Carried the coat for the rest of the (freezing) day as it was the only bit of the combo I could remove.

MammaMiaWallace · 17/01/2021 11:19

In my teens I splashed out on an off white Ted Baker coat and thought I looked amazing.. first outing wearing it a stranger yelled: “oi love why are you wearing a lab coat?” 🤣🤣🤣

Maireas · 17/01/2021 11:14

@BruceAndNosh - looked like a penis 😂 😂 😂

doodlejump1980 · 17/01/2021 11:12

Ditto blue (v cute) dungarees dress and a yellow top underneath. My kids were delighted that I’d dressed up as a minion. Me? Not so much

Miljea · 17/01/2021 11:07

You've all just reminded this middle-aged lady why she needs to keep up the Kegel exercises.... 😂

Kroptopbelly · 17/01/2021 11:06

In the 1980’s my friend and I went on a night out to a bar with a drag Queen as DJ.
Friend looked lovely, white stiletto shoes, white leggings, red floaty blouse all held together by a lovely white belt.
Shut up, it was fashion then!
Anyway, as my friend walked across the dance floor, DJ on the mic announced..”here she comes, she looks like a used tampax”!
She found it very funny but we had to go home so she could get changed.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 17/01/2021 10:56

This thread has made me laugh loads- thanks OP.

I bought myself a lovely stuff cotton shirt dress from Toast - sort of pale black/charcoal colour. I have to be careful with Toast dresses - some a very sack-like.

Anyway thought I'd done well and wore said dress to a family meal where my delightful brother asked why I was dressed like Chairman Mao. ShockGrin

LaMarschallin · 17/01/2021 10:55

After reading this I feel even more stupid for buying a coat that I actually realised looked like a lab coat!

The trouble was that it had a gorgeous lining - all overblown roses in pinks and green on a white satin background - which I fell in love with.
The coat itself was pale pink and I convinced myself it would work.

Of course, when I wore it, you could barely see the lining and I just looked like a lab assistant who (possibly in training to be an absent-minded professor) had left a red sock in with the whites wash.

Ginkypig · 17/01/2021 10:50

@sofiaaaaaa

Wait what, is that a scandal reference?? Didn’t think anyone on this forum knew about Olivia Pope !
You mean the goddess who’s team and herself changed the face of American politics and beyond. Who’s fashion makes me want to chop an arm off and give it to Satan to have the figure to pull it off but who’s relationship choices need work!

No never heard of her.

Purplethrow · 17/01/2021 10:50

@BigusBumus I really think you should, come and show us for the much needed support which you will probably need if you wear them Grin
