Anyone want to moan about injuries?

I'm 47 and falling apart. I've been weight training for over 10 years but despite good form* I'm 9 months into on my second major shoulder injury in 6 years with a hysterectomy in between. I'm fed up of being banjaxed. I'm not looking for fixes, just need a moan.

*As confirmed by both PT and physio

@HollywentLightly are you able to see a physio? Or maybe your GP can refer to a physio, even though it might take some time, theres no harm in getting on the waiting list…
i had my first PT session yesterday - a big buff PT came over me and his opening line was not “hello” but do you have an injury? I explained my elbow and he kind of assessed it and gave me some exercises for it! He probably has had to face the same imjury 10 times in his life! That felt quite positive. Although he is a bit of a cross between a caveman and a bodybuilder, his approach was very caring. Apparently i am “very strong for a woman” (i guess he meant of my age). I could be offended but i find it funny!
i told him i was working on handstands and L-sits before my injury, he said very paternalistically that i was aiming very high but a few exercises later he told me that he was ok to challenge me but first we had to get that elbow/shoulder fixed. I am feeling in good (hairy and tatooed) hands!! I did all my physio exercises after the PT amd properly iced it before putting deep heat and popping a nuoifen - feeling motivated!

@babylone I've been having physio for nearly a year now (I changed a couple of months ago to see if a different approach would help), have had an MRI, seen a shoulder specialist and had 3 steroid injections 😢 I have been very lax on my exercises the last three weeks, which hasn't helped, as there are some other big stresses sucking up life but I need to get some bit back on track. I'm feeling very sorry for myself this morning.

Hi everyone, how are things?
i wanted to come here to say thanks to @herbetta for the book recommendation - it is just great and it makes so much sense, both in the gym and in life!
elbow and shoulder are getting better, im trying to very slowly build a more focused yet diverse routine (as per book!!) and it is working. I am hopeful that by january i should be able to be back to previous training load.

I'm still very much stuck with my ankle pain from this tendonitis, and to make matters worse the other 'good' ankle is kicking up a fuss from compensating for the bad leg.

Feeling really quite down with it all now. I just didn't expect to still feel as painful and limiting at week 5 (almost 6). I feel like 5 weeks ago I was living my life, running with friends, doing fun things with the kids.... and then overnight I became an 80yr old woman that can't walk and has limited mobility! It absolutely sucks right now!

HollywentLightly · 09/10/2026 19:34

I agree, it does really suck @CanIRunYet. I am no better since my last post so have requested a follow up appointment with the consultant who scheduled me in for a repeat MRI in December and she'll see me after that. Maybe I'll ask Santa for a working shoulder? The physio suggested a massage gun so I got one yesterday and have very gently used it last night and today. It's good at getting to the incredibly painful areas under my armpit and armpit /rib area. I think I'm going to have to pause or stop my gym membership. I find it amazing mentally as well as physically, but it's silly to be paying a small fortune when I can't use it. I've restarted couch to 5k to at least do something. Also going to order the book @herbetta suggested.

I feel for everyone still suffering, but am glad you have found the book as helpful as I did.

I now have a R knee issue - it had been getting slowly worse for a while, but was trying to ignore it lol 😅 so I saw my physio - my quads were SO TIGHT but also need some single leg strengthening (which I tend to avoid as I'm better with two legs; hence the problem). I'm having to reduce the heavy leg weight and flexion too.

But, I have been trying to behave & it's definitely better and then I've carefully been trying things out. Plus loads more stretching, bar hangs (slowly working towards chin ups & also L-Sits etc). One thing I have learnt is that things take months to years rather than weeks - and to just go with it. And as per the book 'Stop with the CCTV'!

Well wishes to all & it's probably time for me to dip back into 'Built From Broken' again 😊

I've hEDS and a scoliosis. I weight train also. But weight training on its own isn't enough.

Tom Morrison mobility training fills in that gap. It's hard, but I can't even remember the last time I had an injury. I even ran out of painkillers. That shit works.

babylone · 10/10/2026 10:38

Yes i think the key is “it is going to take a long time”but to do other things, other activities until one day we realise that actually the pain is almost gone… and then totally gone! No quick fix though… frustratingly

BogRollBOGOF · 11/10/2026 16:11

I'm getting to the point of not noticing my tendon and feeling much more normal in daily activities, and just noticing twinges rather than it being a default like it was a couple of months ago. I think it's a combination of time, HRT and a support cushion that takes pressure off the sitting bones.

I'm not sorted yet, I'm slowly plodding through C25k and getting other minor secondary niggles which have come from other weaknesses from resting for about 4 months so I'm trying to do a variety of hip exercises to mobilise and strengthen.

It's nice getting progress though. With autumn and shorter days coming in, realistically it's time to focus on rehab and routines over the coming months. I'm currently transfering a race entry to DH as it works with his plans and I'm clearly not going to be ready.

It's been an annoying injury though as it's been so hard to rest it and divert to other activities.

CanIRunYet · 19/10/2026 10:48

I'm still struggling. It's so hard because tendon issues are so bloody slow healing, and also progress isn't nice and obvious on the day-to-day, or linear. I am on week 4 of physio and can tell my feet are stronger, however, limping about for a month caused my 'good' foot to become stressed and I've got pain in that foot too now from overuse/compensation (though, not as painful or irritating as the original bad foot). Am training both feet with physio and hoping it'll eventually start to heal both.

I was wearing supportive arch insoles, as that seems custom advice for post tib tendonitis, but last week took them out as I swear the firm insole support poked the irritated tendon and made it ache worse. I'd say I've been more comfortable since then, and just hoping I'm not causing any issues by removing them!

I am seeing slight/small improvements now, but certainly won't be heading out for nice walks any time soon. I can just about manage a quick trip round tesco and the school run! I feel my life has massively shrunk!
