Anyone want to moan about injuries?

I'm 47 and falling apart. I've been weight training for over 10 years but despite good form* I'm 9 months into on my second major shoulder injury in 6 years with a hysterectomy in between. I'm fed up of being banjaxed. I'm not looking for fixes, just need a moan.

*As confirmed by both PT and physio

I'm still struggling. It's so hard because tendon issues are so bloody slow healing, and also progress isn't nice and obvious on the day-to-day, or linear. I am on week 4 of physio and can tell my feet are stronger, however, limping about for a month caused my 'good' foot to become stressed and I've got pain in that foot too now from overuse/compensation (though, not as painful or irritating as the original bad foot). Am training both feet with physio and hoping it'll eventually start to heal both.

I was wearing supportive arch insoles, as that seems custom advice for post tib tendonitis, but last week took them out as I swear the firm insole support poked the irritated tendon and made it ache worse. I'd say I've been more comfortable since then, and just hoping I'm not causing any issues by removing them!

I am seeing slight/small improvements now, but certainly won't be heading out for nice walks any time soon. I can just about manage a quick trip round tesco and the school run! I feel my life has massively shrunk!

BogRollBOGOF · 11/10/2026 16:11

I'm getting to the point of not noticing my tendon and feeling much more normal in daily activities, and just noticing twinges rather than it being a default like it was a couple of months ago. I think it's a combination of time, HRT and a support cushion that takes pressure off the sitting bones.

I'm not sorted yet, I'm slowly plodding through C25k and getting other minor secondary niggles which have come from other weaknesses from resting for about 4 months so I'm trying to do a variety of hip exercises to mobilise and strengthen.

It's nice getting progress though. With autumn and shorter days coming in, realistically it's time to focus on rehab and routines over the coming months. I'm currently transfering a race entry to DH as it works with his plans and I'm clearly not going to be ready.

It's been an annoying injury though as it's been so hard to rest it and divert to other activities.

babylone · 10/10/2026 10:38

Yes i think the key is “it is going to take a long time”but to do other things, other activities until one day we realise that actually the pain is almost gone… and then totally gone! No quick fix though… frustratingly

gamerchick · 09/10/2026 22:07

I've hEDS and a scoliosis. I weight train also. But weight training on its own isn't enough.

Tom Morrison mobility training fills in that gap. It's hard, but I can't even remember the last time I had an injury. I even ran out of painkillers. That shit works.

herbetta · 09/10/2026 22:03

I feel for everyone still suffering, but am glad you have found the book as helpful as I did.

I now have a R knee issue - it had been getting slowly worse for a while, but was trying to ignore it lol 😅 so I saw my physio - my quads were SO TIGHT but also need some single leg strengthening (which I tend to avoid as I'm better with two legs; hence the problem). I'm having to reduce the heavy leg weight and flexion too.

But, I have been trying to behave & it's definitely better and then I've carefully been trying things out. Plus loads more stretching, bar hangs (slowly working towards chin ups & also L-Sits etc). One thing I have learnt is that things take months to years rather than weeks - and to just go with it. And as per the book 'Stop with the CCTV'!

Well wishes to all & it's probably time for me to dip back into 'Built From Broken' again 😊

HollywentLightly · 09/10/2026 19:34

I agree, it does really suck @CanIRunYet. I am no better since my last post so have requested a follow up appointment with the consultant who scheduled me in for a repeat MRI in December and she'll see me after that. Maybe I'll ask Santa for a working shoulder? The physio suggested a massage gun so I got one yesterday and have very gently used it last night and today. It's good at getting to the incredibly painful areas under my armpit and armpit /rib area. I think I'm going to have to pause or stop my gym membership. I find it amazing mentally as well as physically, but it's silly to be paying a small fortune when I can't use it. I've restarted couch to 5k to at least do something. Also going to order the book @herbetta suggested.

I'm still very much stuck with my ankle pain from this tendonitis, and to make matters worse the other 'good' ankle is kicking up a fuss from compensating for the bad leg.

Feeling really quite down with it all now. I just didn't expect to still feel as painful and limiting at week 5 (almost 6). I feel like 5 weeks ago I was living my life, running with friends, doing fun things with the kids.... and then overnight I became an 80yr old woman that can't walk and has limited mobility! It absolutely sucks right now!

babylone · 09/10/2026 11:13

Hi everyone, how are things?
i wanted to come here to say thanks to @herbetta for the book recommendation - it is just great and it makes so much sense, both in the gym and in life!
elbow and shoulder are getting better, im trying to very slowly build a more focused yet diverse routine (as per book!!) and it is working. I am hopeful that by january i should be able to be back to previous training load.

HollywentLightly · 16/09/2026 07:00

@babylone I've been having physio for nearly a year now (I changed a couple of months ago to see if a different approach would help), have had an MRI, seen a shoulder specialist and had 3 steroid injections 😢 I have been very lax on my exercises the last three weeks, which hasn't helped, as there are some other big stresses sucking up life but I need to get some bit back on track. I'm feeling very sorry for myself this morning.

@HollywentLightly are you able to see a physio? Or maybe your GP can refer to a physio, even though it might take some time, theres no harm in getting on the waiting list…
i had my first PT session yesterday - a big buff PT came over me and his opening line was not “hello” but do you have an injury? I explained my elbow and he kind of assessed it and gave me some exercises for it! He probably has had to face the same imjury 10 times in his life! That felt quite positive. Although he is a bit of a cross between a caveman and a bodybuilder, his approach was very caring. Apparently i am “very strong for a woman” (i guess he meant of my age). I could be offended but i find it funny!
i told him i was working on handstands and L-sits before my injury, he said very paternalistically that i was aiming very high but a few exercises later he told me that he was ok to challenge me but first we had to get that elbow/shoulder fixed. I am feeling in good (hairy and tatooed) hands!! I did all my physio exercises after the PT amd properly iced it before putting deep heat and popping a nuoifen - feeling motivated!

HollywentLightly · 15/09/2026 09:57

I'm loath to welcome all of you to the club. I'm still suffering badly with my shoulder and I think it's getting worse, possibly moving into frozen territory 😞

Have also ordered the book! Can't hurt can it!

I am feeling I need to get back to working out, but will need to find a way to work around the ankle tendonitis - likely upper body, seated, would be fine and maybe will help me cling to a bit of sanity.

babylone · 14/09/2026 19:25

@CanIRunYetwelcome to the club! Sorry to hear about your injury… tendonitis are very frequent unfortunately …
ive had two physio sessions so far and i am doing my physio exercises almost every day. My injury is one my right elbow/shoulder. I have stopped exercising entirely but it isnt doing me any good food wise and mental health wise…
I have booked a personal trainer (30mins session). so at least i can exercise safely the rest of my body while i am recovering…. First session is tomorrow
im deep into @herbetta’s book which i find really useful.

CanIRunYet · 14/09/2026 11:24

Can I join - I am currently on rest after injuring my posterior tibial tendon, and now have tendonitis there. Likely due to new running shoes making my feet less stable and increasing pace.

Haven't run for 3 weeks. Have barely walked to be honest, as its been so acutely in flare and inflamed. Feel like my life has shrunk to just my house and a rather embarassing daily hobble for the school run.

Had physio Friday and have some exercises to do to strengthen it but he was clear that tendons take a while to heal and its a difficult balance to load it enough that it helps, but not too much so it goes back to inflammation and lots of pain. He basically told me ibuprofen is my BFF here as it will be trial and error, and I'm likely to get it wrong often! No running until I can do the exercises and ramp them up. At this point, I just want to be able to walk without any pain - I'm used to walking 12k steps a day and I'm currently averaging 2-3k.

There's only so much TV I can watch.....

BCBird · 30/08/2026 20:43

I am week 5 into a massive sciatica flare up. I went to a gentle seated chair exercise class on the recommendation of a health care professional- bam agony. Cue shading referrals, popping pills and being in agony. Hope we all get some relief

BogRollBOGOF · 30/08/2026 19:06

Slight progress here. I ran most of parkrun yesterday and only had to walk the second hill. I ached a fair bit for the rest of the day, but am back to current normal today.

Note to self... do physio exercises...

babylone · 30/08/2026 10:45

A week of rest (on holidays) has done nothing for my elbow pain. I still can’t extend my arm fully, let alone do a push up!
I started reading the book yesterday, very self help and very easy to read
Claim for physio started with private insurance, waiting for face to face assessment appointment now

How is everyone doing?

I have a sore calf and insertion Achilles tendonopathy, amongst other things. It is a sod. Been like this for months and I am really missing fast incline walks as that was my main zone 3/4 feel good workout.

Managing to keep going on bike and rowing machine and walking but it is all just a bit shit and sore and I feel like it is never going to go away. Tried absolute rest for a week and almost went mad.

I'm in the tendonitis club too.
This time it's the turn of the top of my hamstring, so to add to the "joy" of significantly restricted activity, sitting too long pisses it off too 🙄

I'd been looking forward to a summer of long, scenic trail runs after the squelchy winter/ spring, open water swimming, bike rides, and a cheeky play on the aquapark, but nope, the only cheeky thing going on around here is month 2 of butt ache.

The biggest game changer for me when recovering from my achilles a few years ago was elevating my ankles on a cushion so my weight wasn't on them as I'm prone to a Haglands Deformity on the edge of my ankle.

Now my best recovery strategy is a pillow on each side of me for side sleeping to reduce the stretch of my top leg around the hip.

I'm reminding myself that after slowly and tediously recovering from the achilles 4 years ago, I did sucessfully run my (deferred) marathon then go on to do a 5k pb plan that summer.

babylone · 20/08/2026 17:05

@herbetta- book is ordered. thank you. The jointace plus i take also has turmeric… i might look at the multicollagen one. Well done on your recovery! Very happy for you! 😊

@afaloren im sorry to hear about your knee injuriy. Were you practicing a sport at a competitive level?

afaloren · 20/08/2026 16:09

I had a bilateral knee injury during the pandemic that despite eventual surgery and extensive physio means (as advised by the surgeon) I should never run or jump again. I will probably also eventually need replacements. Bummer. I’m in my 40s for context.

Deep rissue massage done yesterday and was fantastic. Shoulder is getting better by the day and elbow is stable but not improving… i need to book physio…
@herbettado you think collagen works? Ive been taking marine collagen as well as “jointace plus” since early july and i cannot say things have improved at all… (maybe it would have been worse perhaps?)

Edited

I can't recommend that book - Built from Broken enough, everyone I have recommended it to (as it was to me) has told me how brilliant it is. It is written by a physio and is full of all the behind injury, repair & recovery - including evidence & research based.

The two evidence-based supplements I took early on were Collagen Type II (I actually take Multi Collagen I, II, III V & X that I get from Amazon / Alpha Zero One) and Tumeric supplement). I still take the Collagen now daily. I threw everything at it and I went through several stages of recovery over about 18 months. I could lift weights again after 5 months, but it took longer to do the mobility / smaller stuff. I found it very hard to tell if I was doing too much or too little & couldn't have done it without my excellent physio.

Over the last few months I've been finally progressively loading to lift more than I did pre-injury. I'm late 50s.

Yep, tore my RC 18 months ago (entirely my own fault, I've learnt a lot since then).

HRT. Collagen. The book 'Built From Broken' (amazing & about £12 on Amazon). Excellent Physio. Lots of underlying mobility & strength work. Deep tissue sports massages (and self massage). Dry Needing if appropriate.

I've come back from mine stronger. I had loose skin where my biceps used to be at one point, I didn't expect to be affected by it all so much psychologically. Time, working at the non-sexy stuff, and ultimately appropriate progressive loading.

HotGrapefruit · 20/08/2026 10:36

Similar age and the injuries are endless. I've given up my gym membership this week because I was paying so much just to end up doing a few weights and having a sauna. Can't afford gym and physio, but it feels like I can't do the gym without a physio.

I've had hypermobility for years but now almost everything is torn or healing. Was told I shouldn't do swimming for a few months to let shoulders and knees recover - but I know sometime else will go wrong after that.

SO DEPRESSING.

HollywentLightly · 20/08/2026 10:32

Ugh for everyone who is suffering through injuries. Had another session with the physio this morning..he's actually based on my gym so he took me through some of exercises that are causing me grief (me not realising that was what he planned, so in my work clothes 😐). Anyway his less conservative approach has helped in the last week so maybe the light at the end of the tunnel isn't actually a train?
