Conflict in the Middle East

To feel sorry for Ed Sheeran.....

mids2019 · 16/09/2026 16:19

So Ed Sheeran's tour is in tatters simply because he believes music for entertainment and personally he likes to keep politics out of it (as many many stars do).

Simply because his support wanted to highlight the oppressed people of Iran and the use of capital punishment to stifle dissent support wanted to bring up Gaza without any reference to the start of the war due to a massacre on October 7th and Ed didn't want that he is suddenly the bad guy? Perhaps Ed succumbed to sing of thinking of Jews in the audience and the connotations of 'Free Paelstine' he is now on the naughty step of virtue signallers.

So all those Sheeran fans could lose out seeing someone they have waited months to see because some humpty has to jump on the Gaza bandwagon with a few trite soundbites as part of his act (because hey the ME isn't complicated) to look a bit radical or whatever. Bloody disgrace.

Hmm, well, I'd probably start by ruling out anyone who wasn't born at the time of the attacks. That would be a good assumption to begin with.

Then I'd try looking at my own national security and how terrorists were able to breach the border completely unnoticed and why it took the army and emergency services hours to respond.

Maybe after all that I'd consider what policies were making so many young men feel so hopeless that they saw being pumped full of drugs and sent through a fence to almost certain death as their best option in life.

So in the above scenario you hold no Palestinians responsible for Hamas actions at all? Not even the ones who are part of the Hamas terrorist group.

Such a one sided view that doesn't hold Hamas accountable at all can't be right.

Doesn’t it concern you that he dresses up as a caricature of a Jew?

Ophelia this was over 12 years ago. 12 years! He apologised for it. I’m sure in 12 years the man might have matured a little in his outlook. 12 years ago I might have gone to watch Morrisey. Wouldn’t watch him now if he was playing for free in my back garden.

Well every other big star of the day, Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Harry Styles etc. Will simply choose non nutters as support who can be relied on not to spout one sided anti Semitic rants at concerts. I hope Glastonbury do the same as I guess the Davis family weren't exactly impressed with the negative publicity the event gained. Artists will protect their reputation by simply ensuring there are no outbursts when they are on set.

How do you know what Taylor Swift, etc, etc will or won't do? Are you their agent? 😂
What are all the antisemitic rants that Macklemore has been spouting?

Which part of what Macklemore said was antisemitic?

Bikenutz · 19/09/2026 06:55

Why should anyone be forced to give their political views in public if they are not politicians. I thought we’d got past that era when the secret ballot was introduced in 1872.

Most stars aren't going to be forthcoming about views on Gaza as it simply doesn't make sense for their very carefully built brands. I guess many of the big stars do have views on the middle east but won't air then in public which is their absolute right.

You haven't answered either of my questions mids.
No one was talking about whether stars may or may not be forthcoming in their political views. That's not what you said before. Please look at your post and my response again.
You have also been asked twice to qualify what you mean by Macklemore's antisemitic rants. Again, no response.

Perhaps you are correct that it all came down to $$$$. Perhaps it is somewhat unfair that he is taking the flak. It would seem logical to imagine that Sheeran had some say in this decision, as an incredibly successful artist. Sometimes, wealthy and powerful individuals do need to speak out because they have the ability to do so.

Maybe Sheeran should have taken a leaf out of Green Days book in the 90s. When they chose their support act to be a band called pansy division who were openly gay at a time when homophobia was huge. They were pressured by the industry and venues to drop them as a support act but Green Day refused to budge, telling venue owners that canceling the openers meant canceling Green Day. The tour went ahead with pansy division. Green Day were starting out, no where near as big or influential as Sheeran but they managed it.

That was a brave decision; I didn't know this about Green Day.
Sheeran could have definitely dealt with the situation in a better, braver way.

Exactly

How do you feel about stars who have made their pro Israel views known. Do you think it's across the board that no celebrities should speak about it .

On that I agree. I feel what he could have done is publicly threatened to cancel any future collaborations with Messina to force them to resist Kraft. He made a huge mistake thinking he could just sit this out by being apolitical and Messina made a huge mistake thinking they could just drop Macklemore and the rest of the tour would carry on happily. I believe that if Messina had refused to comply with Kraft and not drop Macklemore, Kraft would have folded.

It’s really satisfying watching him find out after fucking around.

I agree.
Sheeran has not in fact been apolitical.
Always struck me as the type to jump on a trendy bandwagon.
Look at his multiple body tattoos.

Yes tattoos aren't always a look at me I'm so cool thing but in his case you can't help but think they're to make up for his extremely bland looks.

I agree but Sheeran in spite of his - or maybe because of-extremely boring music and lack of good looks and charisma had always liked to be a bit edgy to make up for it.

Well it's backfired. I've no sympathy.

You really don't know musicians. Some of the more commercial acts might comply but they're not interested in political statements and wouldn't have said anything anyway. If you think serious musicians will allow themselves to be gagged by Israel and big corporations, you're going to have a real shock. Even musicians who probably wouldn't have shown any political sympathies are going to be a lot more vocal if they sympathise with the Palestinians. The attempt to censure free speech has totally backfired!

Dee9409 · 19/09/2026 08:58

No sympathy for Ed. He is a disgrace siding with wealthy promotors over his own friend to start off with, they have been friends for 13 years at least. Ed is a coward! The UN has stated it is a genocide so Macklemore was just declaring facts. Also when we look back in history we are always asking why didn’t people stand up and say something? Well now they are. Let’s get Macklemores single to number 1 on the iTunes chart! Adding onto this to those people that say music shouldn’t be political it always has been about messages for the people. Also actually go and listen to the speech because he said NOTHING against Jewish people he was standing up for all of humanity that is being oppressed at the moment. Ed can crawl away he is spineless.

Mischance · 19/09/2026 09:17

There is nothing to stop musicians expressing deeply held views all day every day.
Hijacking a middle of the road family musical show is not necessary.
ES is recognising that this is inappropriate to the show not trying to stifle free speech.

The word Zionism has different connotations for different people. What would you call the Zionism that supports Netanyahus beliefs, that include the ethnic cleansing of gaza to another person's Zionism who doesn't support genocide or ethnic cleansing?

Is everyone avoiding the answer ? Unable to answer? ... because there isn't another definition that separates two entirely different approaches to Gaza. Slaughter Zionism vs political discourse Zionism? If there is a legitimate term that distinguishes one from the other ....if so let's use that so the gymnastics of who finds what insulting, or not, when it suits, is wholly removed.
The silence so far as been deafening.

At the risk of repeating myself ???

I don't think there is another word for it. I saw on another thread where a Jewish poster said if someone asked them if they were a zionist, they wouldn't reply with just a yes or no. As it's not as simple as that.

YourAmplePlumPoster · 19/09/2026 10:33

Arafat and his chums were expelled from Jordan for attempting a coup against the King. They then went to Lebanon and started a civil war with the Christian majority. Egypt has a big wall to keep them out. They were expelled from Kuwait in the nineties for supporting Saddam Hussein. That's the history of the Palestinians in a nutshell.

Unfortunately, there isn't a term to separate these two groups.

Free Iran from?

I believe many people and governments would like an end to the war in Iran. Sorry I am not sure what you are on about.

Edited

Are you really that thick?

Free Iran i.e the Iranian people, from the IRGC

Surely you can't be serious, both about calling the other poster thick and then also saying that you haven't heard anybody calling to free the Iranian people from the IRGC. This was said all over the place, including on here. There were lots of daft comments on here about freeing Iranian women when the US and Israel first started the war on Iran. Although, the two situations are, of course, completely different.
