The entirety of the population of Gaza is in danger of starving to death (if they live long enough to do so). Starving people to death does not create peace. It just creates more pain and anger in the world.

The people trapped in Gaza are not monsters. They are not evil. They are not Hamas. They are people, just like those of us who unlike them are fortunate enough to have a roof over our heads and food on our plates. The actions of the Israeli government/IDF and Hamas are killing them. Please do what you can to help.

I wish I could find the interview so then you could make an informed decision on his "posturing" or not.

I was only quoting the lawyer. He did say it was a huge precedent though. At least, that man is safe.

To take a somewhat more cynical view:

In my personal opinion ...

a) the Home Office did absolutely NOT want these particular questions ("is Israel an Apartheid state?". Also: "even if not, do its policies, specifically, have implications for whether or not Palestinians with Israeli citizenship - especially but potentially not only if they voice political opinions - would qualify as a persecuted group with general grounds to claim asylum?") go to a court of law.
b) because, if the answer were to be "yes, and yes" - or even just "no, but yes", this would set a legal precedent.
c) that would then put the government in an embarrassing position.
d) never even mind its potential to trigger multiple more (now legitimised by precedent) claims on the basis of comparable situations (and we all know how much the government loves asylum claims ... NOT)!
e) if d) then - what would that mean for Palestinians in East Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza if not "at the very least the same"?

I see the Home Office caving in here as more of a "let's put the lid back on before this spirals out of control" than an acknowledgement of anything. In fact, I think its their exact objective to avoid the same.

And, no, I'm not a legal or asylum policy expert - I do trade in cost/benefit analyses as a day job.

I listened to his lawyer speaking on radio 4. The reason he cited, for the decision made by the executive to grant him asylum, was because Israel is an apartheid state.
I, for one, feels the tide is turning on the Israeli government.

I am being very restrained in my use of language by using the word ridiculous. They are total bastards. And the fact that BN stated that he would let minimal aid in, he then does exactly that but the pro Israel Govt supporters on here and elsewhere try and deny its happening.

What would our government say if these comments were made by Russia, China, or any other country, we don’t seek to curry a favour with?

What incentive does this give soldiers to treat Palestinians with respect and dignity?

If a private person repeatedly made statements like this, encouraged cruelty, and arranged for the death of innocent people like these two, they would be designated a terrorist. May they one day be held accountable for their crimes.

In January, US Senators Chris Van Hollen and Jeff Merkley saw maternity kits and water filtration systems among the items Israel turned back from its inspection point in Nitzana.
“In no rational world could (these) be deemed dual use or any kind of military threat,” Van Hollen told CNN weeks after his trip to Egypt’s side of the Rafah crossing.
“We learned that when a truck with just one of those items is turned down, the entire truck gets turned around and has to go back to the beginning of the process, which can take weeks,” Van Hollen said.

It's not only ridiculous but the limitations on what can enter Is far worse than I initially thought. For example a truck with maternity kit with pads being sent back because it included nail clippers which comes under 'dual use'
And a truck load of sleeping bags sent back because they were green and the colour green also comes under 'dual use' as is sometimes used by the military.
One truck with food aid that had dates were sent back because of the pitted seeds!

It's totally ridiculous. I read UK Govt medical supplies were turned back by Israel authorities . I think it was ventilators.
But in the UK the Govt won't even allow fund raising for Medical Aid for Palestinians. Separately to that the things I saw written under one of their fund raising posts by pro Israeli Govt supporters were beyond disgusting and repulsive.

I remember reading about US sanctions on Iraq preventing all kinds of medicine getting through, including cancer treatment and pain killers. Whatever reason they give, I’m sure the chance to inflict maximum suffering is the real reason.

The sheer absurdity of an occupation who drops white phosphorus on a defenceless population, uses drones to shoot at civilians and drops bombs on people, housing and historical sites indiscriminately - banning something as basic as surgical scissors.

@Parkingt111 the restrictions on medical equipment and medications have been in place for quite a long time, and when combined with the difficulties in accessing healthcare outside of Gaza made a cancer or other serious diagnosis in Gaza a truly traumatic experience.
